For 1987 vs. 1990, I would take 1990...maybe. I feel that Final Fantasy's presence was demolished by the presence of FFIX in the year 2000, causing the year to be considerably underrated. Of course, the question is... does the combination of a beloved Mario game with Final Fantasy enough to take on the start of four respected series, including two Nintendo heavy-hitters?

I mean Chrono Trigger doubled Mario World once upon a time, even if LttP could double SMW it wouldn't mean anything since it'd just be SFF

I don't recall any such match. CT doubled Mario RPG in 2004 and got 59% on SMW the next round. I figure SMW has closed the gap since then given its impressive performance on FFVIII in the last game contest before the Undertale rally occurred... I mean, LttP only got 3% higher against FFIV!

Oh, and silly me for thinking MGS3 could handle Skyrim... well, maybe it COULD, but not based on the last games contest. But I can't think of even a game that matches with Skyrim. I can't think of a good match for Skyrim aside from Metroid Prime. Kingdom Hearts? Mega Man X ? Fallout 3?

Regardless of how much the gap has closed, I can't see Mario World beating LttP straight up. That's one of those situations Zelda always wins.

Like, I don't think OoT would 80/20 Mario 64 anymore, but Mario 64 would never win.
Advokaiser 12/21/2017 7:24:34 PM#253
Fallout 3 would probably be SFF'd hard by Skyrim. Kingdom Hearts is a nice contender but I don't know the x-stats very well. Mega Man X though... That could be really close. If we assume FFX takes down Skyrim by at least 55%.

Right now, probably Fallout 3, though it'd still be incredibly close. That'll probably change though depending on how much hype Prime 4 develops.

I was asking because last time the match happened Fallout 3 was only two years old.

I think FO3 still has decent enough nostalgia and if anything I think FO4's backlash probably helps FO3.

The original Metal Gear finished with a playrate of 41.63% in yesterday's poll, which was only slightly higher than the result from back in 2006. The playrate rebounded to 2006 levels again after losing almost 4% in the 2012 poll.

3DS ownership drops to 71.50%, less than 6 months after setting its all-time highest ownership mark of 72.69%. It seems like this is the end for the 3DS, as the release of the Switch means we're not likely to see anyone else getting on board with the 3DS if they haven't already bought one yet.

PS4 ownership increases to 67.49%. Based on the PS3's all-time mark of 69.46%, it seems like the PS4 doesn't have much room to grow from here. It has a better chance of breaking 70% ownership, at least in part to the PS4 not having the same blunders that caused the PS3 to get off to a terrible start.

Switch ownership increases to 45.04%. Although it's a much better first year for the Switch compared to Wii U, it's still well behind the Wii for best ownership after one year. The Wii had 56.90% ownership by the end of 2007. If the Switch couldn't recreate the Wii hype, I don't think any other system will. The Wii was such an unusual enigma that I don't think can be repeated again, partly because site demographics are much different today than in 2006. I made this post around 2 months ago regarding the Wii:

https://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/75900573/889323802

The Wii also reached 50% ownership before 2007's major releases Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 were even released, at a time when Twilight Princess was the only game worth caring about on the Wii. The Switch just ended its first year with Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, and a handful of other games, but it's not even reflected in the Switch's ownership. The possibility of hype for Brawl being a driving factor in the early Wii hype can't be ignored here, but I don't really buy Brawl hype as being a contributing factor in the strong first year of the Wii in terms of ownership. People just don't buy a system at launch based on a future game that is more than a year from being released.

As long as the Switch can keep a steady game line-up instead of gathering dust by the years like the Wii did, I think Nintendo could have a nice resurgence (and it's actually having it).

Can't wait for the Game of the Year polls! This has been the first year I've been excited about with so many acclaimed games. (Gaming seemed to be pretty much dead from 2014 to 2016.)

Is there any game that could beat Cuphead as best indie game though? I don't see much competition in that regard... unless we count PUBG, but I think it's still in beta...
Here lies the sig of BK_Sheikah00, who swore fealty to the Gurus of Board 8.
PUBG came out of Early Access on Steam earlier this month, but mzny sites aren't including it in their Game of the Year awards. Pretty much every major site does GotY awards in December, so games that come out in December generally aren't eligible to be included in GotY awards for that year.

GameSpot themselves have said PUBG won't be in their GotY awards for this year, but it will be eligible for next year's awards.

After this year the Switch is pretty much guaranteed a relative down year for 2018. The console received two of the best games of the decade for Nintendo fans in the same year.

Xbox One ownership increases to 27.06%, and this is after roughly 4 years of being on the market. After the previous ownership result which saw the Xbox One's ownership drop just slightly (probably as a result of people holding off on Xbox One X), ownership went back up again. The disturbing trend of the Xbox One ownership polls is the "No, I don't have any interest in buying one" option consistently getting 60-70% in every single poll since the start of 2014. This trend clearly establishes a limit on how much higher Xbox One ownership can increase. 40% ownership seems like the maximum we could expect for the Xbox One before the generation comes to an end.

I really don't know. I don't even know if Brawl originally had an earlier intended release date.

I don't really remember much from the Brawl hype period apart from major announcements like Sonic, Solid Snake, and Zero Suit Samus. There were also the daily Dojo updates which was a thing as well.

Oh yeah, I made a mistake there and the second "Year" should actually say "Average".

I have more time right now to add farther comment to the current state of our vote totals. Even though 2017 was the 9th straight year of a vote total decline, it was only the 8th straight year in which vote totals declined by 15% or more compared to the previous year (2008 to 2009 was a relatively small decrease of less than 6%).

It's safe to assume that 2018 will be our 10th straight year of a vote total decline, given that we were averaging around 13000 votes by the end of 2017. Assuming we maintained that 13000 vote total average throughout 2018, it would only be a 8.98% decrease in vote totals from 2017. I don't expect we'll be able to maintain an average vote total of 13000 over the course of an entire year, and some decline could happen during this year.

As for what our average vote totals would look like if they continued to decline by 15% compared to the previous year:

Year | Average
2017 | 14282
2018 | 12140
2019 | 10319

2017 is the only actual result listed there, with 2018 and 2019 being extrapolations. So based on this, we'd be averaging under 10000 votes by the end of 2019 if vote totals don't hit rock bottom and stabilize before then.

More like an indie game is blowing the competition to smithereens! I admit I never heard of that game until today. After watching a video, I'm really impressed by the 1930's cartoon style, which I had never before seen in a video game.

I wonder if Cuphead can compete with Persona 5...probably not, it's a longshot, but Cuphead was all over Twitch awhile and is about as awesomely retro of a game as it gets. Throw in multiplatform too and a man can dream.

I'm honestly surprised that after the development hell it's been through Cuphead actually turned out solid.

Not so surprised that it's dominating the XB1 poll considering the other alternatives.

Time for some garbage statz extrapolating through each of the 3 games in both polls. Xbox poll totals from 3:50 EST.

Comparing with the games in both days, what does Cuphead get vs Persona 5? Behold, some irrelevant snapshot stats.

Via RE7:

Cuphead - 45.30%
Persona - 54.70%

Cuphead - 31.73%
Persona - 68.27%

Via Wolfenstein II:

I'd say RE7 is probably overperforming here because the competition is worse and it's just a name people know.
Wasn't Assassin's Creed Origins considered the best game in the series since II? I knew that Cuphead could be somewhat strong (definitely the strongest indie this year), but not THAT strong.

PC poll today:

https://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/6948-

We've got a 3-way fight between Divinity: Original Sin II, Doki Doki Literature Club, and PUBG right now.

Remember how we were calling 2017 the best year for gaming since 2011? This was back in April/May of last year around the time of the Years Contest. Since then, 2017 has not looked particularly great. Based on these polls so far, 2017 is anchored by Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Persona 5, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and NieR: Automata. There's no supporting cast after that, as every other game has looked like total ass in these polls.

Also, I hear Edith Finch is amazing but it's about to get last place for its second time and was next-to-last another time. 5.96% total between three polls that Persona 5, Cuphead, and Doki Doki Literature Club win...awful performances.

Honestly it says more about how indies are gaining steam on this site if Cuphead can blow out the XB1 poll and DDLC of all games can put on a strong performance for PC.

Though also nice DOS2 is winning, that's a solid game that's kinda slipped under the radar this year due to an incredibly stacked release year of games.
