Huh, an FFV playrate poll.

Didn't expect that.

No option for translated SNES ROM, Luster's going to be heartbroken.

I'm honestly kinda surprised FFV's playrate is over 50%. I figured it was one of the least played mainline games in the series other than II or III, or the MMO games.

It probably still is one of the least played. GameFAQs has just played a lot of Final Fantasy.

I do feel bad for all these suckers who played the Anthologies version first, though.

but at least it introduced me to the best spelling of X-Death

FF fever was super high at one point, I can see newer entries having less playrate because people don't care anymore.

GBA version best version, it adds a bit of spark to a rather flat story by making the turtle an a****** to the protagonist.

Also best gameplay in the series and indirectly raises thousands of dollars a year for charity and all that.

Over 50% is impressive considering it doesn't have a modern day re-release on consoles or PC. It has been re-released on mobile platforms, but nothing on consoles or PC (such as Steam, PS3, or PS4).

FF5 is on Steam, though.

Ah, I missed that. So it is on Steam after all. Even with that release, the option "Yes, I first played the iOS / Android / PC version" is still the least popular option with only 3.82%. It seems like a proper re-release on a console may be the only way to boost FFV's playrate.

According to GameFAQs, the Anthology version is not on PSN. No known version of FFV is available on a modern day console (PS3, PS4, Wii, Wii U, or Switch).

GBA is your best bet, it punches the script up a bit and adds new stuff like the other GBA ports. The mobile/Steam releases are the same except with new (and mostly uglier as far as the characters/map tiles go) graphics and some QoL features like Auto Battle. SNES is fine, translation's a bit dry but it works. PS1 has a pretty terrible translation (though you might find Faris's pirate speak and the enemy names hilarious) and lengthy load times, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Depends on the context and the quality of each picture. For example, a pic featuring BotW Link would be really hard to beat by a lot of things, but a good and/or classic meme would probably suffice (i.e. Trollface). Something like Keyboard Cat would not be enough with a pic alone. A pic of a cat must be incredibly cute to be able to beat it (I personally wouldn't rely on funnyness, since that's hard to put on picture and would probably hurt it more than help it).

But hey, if freakin' Santa couldn't beat Link on Christmas Eve, I don't know what external factor could.

Donkey Kong vs. Meta-Knight looks like it might be kinda close based on some past results but come the match I don't think it would be in any doubt whatsoever. Donkey Kong is probably stronger than used to be; he almost tripled Falco last character battle. Meta-Knight has shown he can beat fodder-line Nintendo leeches (and Peach) but totally destroying them is something else. I'd be more curious to see if Donkey Kong could beat Captain Falcon.

A Link to the Past vs. Super Mario World would probably be the equivalent of Link vs. Mario, specially since both are SNES games. Super Mario 64 is the only Mario game that could get even remotely close to ALttP, and even then it would not beat it.

FFVI vs. Majora's Mask though... If it wasn't for the fact that MM barely beat Super Metroid in 2015, the answer wouldn't be as clear as it is now, since both FFVI and MM have strengthened a lot over time.

It's interesting to see The Simpsons and X-Men being in a near deadlock here. The poll question makes it difficult to assess their strength as a franchise, since voters are probably voting on which option makes the most sense for a Kingdom Hearts crossover game.

I mentioned SMW vs. LttP because Mario 64 was nearly even with LttP once upon a time. And some people think SMW is stronger than Mario 64, so I was wondering even anyone would give it a shot of overtaking the 16-bit Zelda. Granted, if SMW boosted, LttP probably did as well, so LttP probably wins with 53+% and that's before SFF. If LttP could get 65% on SMW, that would make me very happy! ...but it of course wouldn't be that bad.

Meta-Knight got 38% on Bowser, I believe... no, wait, he got 35% on Luigi. And then did significantly worse against Bowser in 3-ways! Talk about terrible memory! In that case, there's very little chance DK loses to Meta-Knight! Okay, DK vs. Captain Falcon would be a great match, then.

Final Fantasy 1 playrate poll today.

Apparently the GBA version doesn't exist.

So in yesterday's poll, Final Fantasy 1 finished with a playrate of only 62.61%. This is nearly 5% lower than a playrate poll from 1 year ago. For reference, here are the 2 most recent playrate polls:

Both polls have a different set of options, so it's a bit harder to make solid comparisons here. Looking at even earlier polls suggests last year's poll was either an outlier, or last year's poll was flawed in some manner to otherwise inflate FF1's playrate. In the Board 8 wiki page on playrate, FF1's playrate is listed here:

Final Fantasy 1's Playrate history - 58.47% on 6/26/06, 58.50% on 2/16/07, 59.04% on 12/18/12, 67.21% on 12/18/16, and 62.61% on 12/19/17

The 67.21% playrate result seems out of line with the other results, although the playrate was trending upwards in every poll after the 2006 poll. I'd put yesterday's poll as being more accurate than the poll from 2016.

It's almost time for GotY.

So what will be #2 and #3 after BotW? I'm gonna guess Persona 5 for #2 and NieR: Automata for #3, with Odyssey just barely getting SFFed into #4.

SBAllen has made exceptions for stuff like that before.

SBAllen knows better than to exclude one of SMO and BotW this year. He'll find a way around it, whether that means running a Wii U poll or just using a Common Sense Exemption.

Then again, I don't know what else could go in the Wii U poll besides BotW.

Can't wait to see the polls for this stacked-to-the-core year. It seems like everything 2014 through 2016 lacked was crammed into this year.

Even then, Sony and Microsoft haven't convinced me remotely as hard as last Gen. Nintendo revitalized my faith in it with the Switch.
