The main character of Persona 5 is nicknamed Joker, and he's probably the most recognizable character of the bunch. Makoto's the fan favorite, but I'd take Joker to be the strongest.

I know Yakuza's never been in a contest in any form, but Yakuza 0 seems pretty well-received and the series has been around forever, so I think Kazama Kiryu could be a low midcarder. Aloy from Horizon: ZD could also potentially win a match.

And it's kind of funny to realize Doomguy's never been in a contest here.

It's probably a Persona 5 character.

Kazama Kiryu would be fodder and would easily lose to Laharl. He failed to make a 243-character bracket in 2013 without really having a decent excuse and none of his games have ever been worth anything here. Yakuza 0 is no exception:

I'm skeptical about Aloy but eh, her game is popular enough to at least make seeing her in a match worthwhile.

Joker, Aloy, and 2B are probably the only new characters this year that have the potential to win a match, though I hope Jack Baker makes a contest just so the board can be inundated with "Welcome to the family, son" memes.

crash is weird in that he's a character that seems to get stronger the less relevant he is

like 2013 is probably his peak in that field and that's also probably the best he's ever done.

I really don't want to make a prediction on which game would a GotY between Persona 5 and Super Mario Odyssey, at least until Mario is out.

We've seen a ton of gameplay from Super Mario Odyssey so far, but no amount of gameplay shown at this point is a substitute for actually playing or seeing the full game.

Yeah, there's no point discussing it now obviously, but it's not like we really have much else to talk about so

That doesn't make any sense. In any case, they're remembering the games that made Crash good in the first place (not even counting newcomers and casuals joining into was has been a very well received Remake/Remaster).

Gordon Freeman vs. Master Chief, who wins and with what %?

Gordon Freeman with 67%

Freeman with 57%.

Master Chief might be around fodder-line weak at this point but I figure he's polarizing enough to avoid being outright destroyed. I also don't have a ton of confidence in Freeman. HL2 did relatively poorly in 2015, his good result on Leon in 2013 doesn't mean as much to me given how RE4 likewise performed poorly in 2015 and while Leon had some very plausible excuses for why he performed dreadfully against Cloud and Squirtle part of it might also have just been him being weaker, and I just don't think HL is a good match for gamefaqs' old, console-nostalgic rump userbase.

Chrono Trigger vs FFVII in a "Best JRPG" contest.

That's a tough one.

For reference, here's how they both did against Melee in 2015, with a couple caveats of course:

So I think the consensus around 2013 was that Snake was our second-strongest traditional character. 46% on Link is way better than Mario's ever looked and after the Mario/Vivi/Ganondorf debacle it was hard to give much credit to Mario magically pulling out in a win there.

Would people still go the same way now?

Tough match since the Switch is booming, Super Mario Odyssey is anticipated, and Solid Snake has that SSBB support that might get drained. I'm also not quite sure what to make of Solid's stock lately since he's not been in a game (technically) since 2008 and MGS3 beats the rest of his series that he's actually in.

I'd probably be stubborn and take Mario. It's not like he hasn't beaten him before anyway (2005, year of the Mario and subsequent Sephiroth sacrifice).

I'd probably play it safe and go with Mario. His stock has been dropping in the last few contests, but the impending release of Odyssey would probably be enough to get him back to his old self if it turns out to be as good as it looks. Plus, as HaRR said, Snake's really had nothing to keep himself propped up in quite a while.

then again neither has Chrono Trigger and look at the last Games Contest so who knows

After how bad MGS stuff looked last contest, Mario is probably the safe choice.

Metal Gear Solid looked about the same as it always has, honestly. The games have never been as strong as Snake himself. MGS1 narrowly beat FFT and got 70/30'd by FFVII in the original Games Contest.

Mega Man was definitely down for a few years when we were having 4-ways (and 2006, too), but it never really caught up with him other than the time Snake almost beat him and Zero combined.

Samus has probably been the most stable Noble Niner though, yeah.

After Link, of course.

Link's been up and down at times, too, but he's stronger than literally everybody else (most of the time), so it never matters.

Funny how FFVI has proven time and time again that it's stronger than FFX, yet some people are still willing to believe the opposite.

FFX would have probably won that match in the late '00s. Now it's probably a 55-45 win for VI.

Wasn't FFT much stronger back then than it has been since? And the FF7 loss was probably SFF. Direct extrapolation has MGS2 beating 1.

Maybe we all just expect the MGS games to be stronger because of how highly-regarded they are plus Snake's contest strength. I remember until Prime's showing in GOTD a lot of us were surprised that no Metroid game seemed to have much strength.

I can't be the only one surprised that Samus has looked stable in spite of her series going dormant for a while.

The thing is, I never believed FFX > FFVI to be true at any point in time. Close match? Sure, but FFVI is pretty much the ALttP of the Final Fantasy series.
