The only exciting offseason we've ever had was after 2003.

Feels kinda like the last on-season (tag).

I was legit thinking to myself all the contest winners and finalists we had, and I momentarily stopped at Undertale because I forgot the years even happened.

From the last topic, here’s what a bracket of a “Best Original Game Contest” would look like. I used the 2004 games and 2006 series contest to determine valid spin-off games. Final Fantasy Tactics, Mega Man X, Super Mario Kart and Super Mario RPG were added to the bracket. I also went with Super Mario Bros. as the original game for the Super Mario Bros. series

Yeah, I was meaning potential handheld SFF in that same way we talked about RBY crushing Tetris before.

Except it really didn't crush Tetris super hard, so I don't think that was a discussion worth having!

And anyway, only GSC would SFF Ace Attorney, because you'd have Ho-Oh the Phoenix against Phoenix the Human.

Today I drove through Wyoming and felt the need to vote in the PotD for some reason.

Damn, freaking Elder Scrolls crushing it.

The Elder Scrolls has two factors working for it today, both involving Skyrim: Skyrim is by far the biggest last installment of every mentioned series, and it's also nearly the oldest last installment of every mentioned series (I think only beaten by MKX by seven months, which reminds me: Portal 3 should have been here!). People loved that game and are ready for the next.

Too bad Valve has a fear of the number 3.

Does skyrim being on the Nintendo switch help the elder scrolls votes today? Seeing as drones might be hopeful the next true elder scrolls would be on the switch as well?

It's not out yet and somehow I doubt the Switch version will be that big a seller considering it's a last-gen game that's already been rereleased this gen on the major consoles, plus the Switch already has an open world game that dramatically improves on Skyrim's open world aspects, which was the game's big appeal in the first place.

No sequels? Nice idea actually. Of course Zelda wins again but hey.

Man, it's embarrassing how far Microsoft has fallen on this site. Microsoft is one of the "big three" for E3 press conferences and is currently losing to Bethesda, one of the non-big three.

Bethesda actually beat Sony as well back in 2015. I can't remember why, though.

2015 was the first year where Bethesda hosted their own press conference, so there might have been some hype for that conference. People might have been thinking they would drop a major game announcement, like the next Elder Scrolls. It was already known before Bethesda's 2015 press conference that Fallout 4 would be coming out, so the press conference simply showed off gameplay from the upcoming game.


Nintendo's performance in today's poll looks fairly unimpressive considering the amazing start for the Switch, so I would have expected some hype for Nintendo based on that alone. Nintendo is only doing about 5% better than the 2015 poll despite today's poll having only 7 options (instead of 8 for the 2015 poll).

Yesterday's poll was "Which sequel do you want to see the most?" which Elder Scrolls 6 dominated, so I imagine part of it is due to that.

So who's the strongest character who's only been in one contest and never came back? I'm excluding 2013 since none of those have had the chance to come back yet.

Jecht from FFX comes to mind as a candidate. Either way, he needs to come back to show Tidus how to win contest matches.

Tidus still has never made it past the second round. Jecht did it in his first contest.

Strider? Ms. Pac-Man if you assume Mega Man is a bad SFF match?

Strider is a good example, or he was. I dunno if he'd be worth anything nowadays, although wasn't he disqualified after 2002 once CJayC learned he didn't actually originate in a game?

Actually, we may need to get Tina Armstrong back. She'd be weak as s***, but Tina was a big part of contest history, as the catalyst of GFNW.

I would probably guess Cid Highwind

Unless we count Jay Solano then yeah Cid Highwind is probably the right answer. Darth Revan and Strider also did pretty well. If you count Rivalry Rumble, we actually did get to see Jecht again.

M. Bison did well enough in villains I guess?

In 2013 (or thereabouts) I remember someone asked Allen about Strider Hiryuu and Allen okayed him for future contests. And while Strider technically appeared in a manga first, the Strider franchise had been conceived as a multimedia project between Capcom and the manga author.

Jecht was in villains, too. :P

Cid's a good pre-2013 guess. I wanted to say Missingno at first, but I forgot about its return.

spoilers Crono still loses because even in 2003 he can't out-rally anyone

Given the way Pokemon is these days, I'd give Nidoran F a great chance of being one of the strongest one-offs.

Jigglypuff got annihilated by MMX despite having vastly more reason to have strength than nidoran. Being a Pokemon, even one from RBY, is not good enough if people don't care about you.

Jigglypuff isn't that weak. I mean it's no midcarder, but it would comfortably defeat 2006 Nidoran F before SFF. Don't forget Mega Man X essentially has the strength of a noble nine character, he broke 57% against Ryu (before and after the Draven rally).

Remember when we theorized that Shadow would be the strongest FF6 character due to his ninja appeal? It's a shame we never got to see that tested.

While I didn’t believe Shadow would’ve defeated Terra the point is now moot due to the release of Dissidia. Among the other characters I feel he could be one of the strongest. Locke was 60/40 by Ness in 2013 so the bar isn’t that high though Celes looked half decent against Knuckles (would’ve broke 40%). After that we have Edgar and Mog to consider.

Charmander's rankings look broadly agreeable. I'd move Gau down two spaces - old poll or not I feel like he shouldn't have gotten under 2% if he was worth anything and my intuition would kind of place him with the bottom 4 as characters I don't think people care much about. Feel like Gogo > Umaro is likely just based on all the WHO IS GOGO questions and theories people made giving some reason to remember him/her/it. Not sure what to think on Edgar/Shadow/Sabin.

I never played it but didn't Setzer appear in KHII?

(Gogo is Adlai Stevenson, never forget!)

In Kingdom Hearts II Setzer makes an appearance during the early part of the game and is an optional fight in the later part. I doubt his appearance gave him much of a boost.
