I just came on here just now, and I expected 1998 to beat 2003, but I didn't expect it to absolutely decimate it like it is.

I just checked the results.
Every contest I say that OOT or Link will lose or at least do bad and every year I am wrong. Barring rallies nothing can beat them.
Also no perfects? I was expecting at least 10 perfects. Damn!

Since the last time I asked someone went and did it, let's make a 2017 match pic for this round!

Breath of the Wild
Persona 5
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Nier: Automata
Resident Evil 7
Nioh
Hollow Knight
Yakuza 0

And here's some unreleased games that'd probably make the list if you want to swap any out:

Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Red Dead Redemption 2
Super Mario Odyssey
Splatoon 2

I bet 2017 could get like 30% on 1998.

Mentioning Nier Automata like that made me wonder if they bothered mentioning Nier in 2010 (they didn't). With all of the buzz Automata has been getting, Nier probably would have been an asset in that year.
Although I'm not really sure how it lost even without Nier in the mix - Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 should have been plenty enough to beat 2002's offerings.
2010's issue was that it did not have a true anchor, it was a year with a bunch of really good games, but nothing like a Metroid Prime/Kingdom Hearts.

Just because Undertale and Draven happened doesn't mean Link decreased in strength
And I would say he is stronger than ever thanks to BotW

I mean it's basically just BotW and friends (just talking about the games already out), so it all depends on how strong you think BotW is. If you remove BotW, it's as strong as any other year.

in terms of strength no but Mass Effect 2 was a higherly rated and respected game that won GOTY on this site even over games like FF13 and mario galaxy 2

REd dead is also a hugely respected game.

If you're still interested in contributing, please get your images for games (both used and unused in previous rounds) to us as soon as possible.

In particular, we'd really like to see images from:
Final Fantasy VII
Age of Empires
Fallout
Harvest Moon

You guys with availability over the next two hours are encouraged to make a FFVII picture. I can't imagine Allen would actually bounce it from the lineup, but he's singling it out here, so you can never be too sure.

i dunno i kept hearing how much strength FF7 has lost on this site and since FFX/Melee was one of the most hyped matches of the last contest them both being in 2001 made me think f*** yeah this year is a powerhouse

add to it it has some tail end 64 classics (Conkers BFD and Paper Mario) plus the beginnings of a new age in Halo and GTA 3, all 4 of which have some kind of strength on this site it just looks like such a beast

Melee is only that level cause of rallies. It's strong but was getting waxed by CT before the rallies kicked in iirc
FFX/Melee didn't happen last time. It could have, but Chrono Trigger wrecked the ever hell out of FFX.

FF7 is no slouch. It's competitive for third strongest game on the site behind OoT and CT. Also, 1997 has the added bonus of not inheriting FF7's anti-votes so having FF7 in the year is even better than it normally would be.
My bracket got smashed by DpObliVion.

I had Melee > CT for the longest time, but then I realized that CT was going to beast mode through the contest and changed it to CT > Melee.

And that's how you can be wrong for the right reasons.

FF7 got 56-57% against Melee from Gamefaqs only votes right? That's quite consistent with the 50/50 action at the start, before the rally kicked in, given the games' trends.

Congratulations to DP Oblivion in the Guru Contest!
FF7 is the strongest game

but FFX and Melee are clearly 2nd and 3rd strongest(in what order I have no idea)

SOTN a distant but distinct 4th

then Halo, Goldeneye, Paper Mario, Star Fox etc are all basically equal to each other, all games that seem to get knocked out in the second round of game contests

Goldeneye is way closer to SotN than those other games. In fact, Goldeneye beat SotN in the first games contest. The result would likely flip today, but 007 is still well above the likes of Star Fox 64 and Halo.

fair, and I also forgot about MGS2, which is also probably above Halo and co. So tie up Goldeneye and MGS2 as just a tick under SOTN and this match still looks equal on paper

This was provided by Allen:

Smash Bros. Melee vs. Final Fantasy VII: 42.92% / 57.08%

So yeah, it was about 57%. Registered users are more Nintendo biased than non-registered users, so FFVII probably would have gotten around 58% in a match without any rallied votes.

one last interesting thing, the games that made it into the top 50 from last contest's xstats

Final Fantasy VII (3rd)
Castlevania SOTN (28th)
Goldeneye (36th)

2001

Super Smash Bros Melee (11th)
Final Fantasy X (15th)
Metal Gear Solid 2 (35th)
Paper Mario (47th)

We seriously need to a battle royale with ALttP, OoT, CT, FFVII and RBY since I feel that these are our 5 strongest games on the site (by natural strength) and they could be in any order. The only result we know (from direct matchup in 2015) is OoT > FFVII and OoT > ALttP.
(edited 5/19/2017 6:59:03 PM)report
Well, OoT > LttP pretty much forever, but apart from that you might be right. I can see LttP still challenging CT if the Nintendo fanbase sides firmly with the more Nintendo game.

I don't think you believe that about 91/94!

my contest tenure thrives on false hope

I don't give up on matches easily because anything can happen but when 1991 didn't start making any moves once the Power Hour was over it was a long shot to win
Also, the next big contest we get (hopefully) should be a 1v1 character battle. Whether we're running multiple matches a day or utilizing the 12-hour format, we haven't seen one of those in seven years now. We have no idea where a lot of these characters stand, and I think such a contest will be a ton of fun because the internet is more meme-driven than ever before, so every character could be a 1-day all star.
Multiple matches per day would be preferable over the 12-hour format. With vote totals as low as they are now, we can't afford to reduce the vote totals even more. There is a slight reduction in vote totals per match when there are multiple matches running at the same time, but that would be preferable over a more severe reduction in vote totals going from 24 hours to 12 hours.

In this contest, the 1 match per day rounds have vote totals about 18% higher than the rounds where multiple matches are running.

Round 2: Defeated 2007, 70.98% - 29.02%
Round 3: Defeated 1996, 69.15% - 30.85%

Analysis

I took 2001 to reach the final thinking it was an upset pick, but it turns out it was the guru favourite. 2001 is arguably the second deepest year in the contest, but what holds it back is its relatively weak anchor. You could potentially argue that nine different years have a game that would defeat Melee. This was apparent last round where 1995 almost won despite having relatively low depth, but with a Chrono Trigger that would dominate Melee.

While Final Fantasy VII is weaker than Chrono Trigger it would still easily defeat Melee and 1997 has much better depth than 1995. If the picture remains the same I would be very surprised if 1997 lost. I have yet to see the picture for this match, but the best case scenario for 2001 would be if Super Smash Bros. Melee and Final Fantasy X were placed in the number one slot and if Metal Gear Solid 2 makes the picture. While it is unlikely SSBM/FFX would defeat FFVII/Castlevania: SotN it would make the gap small enough for the other games to counter.

Of course even with a more favorable picture 2001 winning is not guaranteed. I’ll be going against my bracket in this match. As long as 1997’s top 4 games are in the first two rotation slots it is possibly only one year would be able to defeat it.

Feels like that would cause a lot of issues over who is considered a supporting character or not, sort of like that (thankfully) failed attempt at Worst Character Ever.
