I hope this launches me into the Top 50. I'd only be up there for two days before 1997 shreds my bracket, but it's a fun little victory regardless.

It doesn't matter what happens in this competition. The real winners are 2001 and 2000. They are the only non-90s years that managed to go head to head with a 90s year and come away the victor. That is a much more difficult achievement than actually winning the competition.

Good catch, I didn't notice that. So basically, the only years that could compete with the 90s is one that is, in spirit, a 90s year itself, and another that represents like half of the PS2/GameCube/Xbox power catalog.
To be fair 1993 and 1999 would have likely lost to a majority of the entrants.

Possibly but I'm not sure. Both were up against the two titans of the contest and didn't get a chance to show anything, and both missed crucial elements to their picture.

1999 didn't get a single N64 game in a year that had some notable ones (mainly Smash, but also Pokemon Snap, Mario Party, and DKC64).

1993, from what I can tell, may have been the only year that didn't get its #1 strongest game (probably by a mile) in the picture. From that standpoint, it may have been even more screwed in its picture than 1995, though no one had reason to care.

Link's Awakening
Secret of Mana
Doom
Aladdin

With that lineup, I think 93 could have done well for itself.

You could argue 2013 may not have either, and ironically, it's a handheld Zelda that got snubbed in both instances.

Not like 1998 needs its optimal lineup here.

I assume he's not just reusing these same pics the rest of the way.

Watch, he will wait until the finals, and still not use them, leaving a 98 headed by WCW/nWo Revenge and Panzeer Dragoon.

If 1994 holds its percentage, I'm not really sure you can blame 1991's loss on the match pictures. FF4 being in slot 4 is bad but 1994 is missing MMX altogether. If you move FF4 to slot 1 or 2 but add MMX as a slot 2 game for 1994, I'm not sure 1991 turns this around.

A favourable SNES picture could have made a difference here

Also wtf no KOTOR for 2003?
Match XXXII – Round 3 – 1998 vs. 2003

Previous Results

1998
Round 1: Defeated 1993, 85.93% - 14.07%
Round 2: Defeated 1992, 72.85% - 27.15%

2003
Round 1: Defeated 2013, 58.03% - 41.97%
Round 2: Defeated 2005, 57.67% - 42.33%

Analysis

So we end the third round with the strongest game going up against the weakest remaining game. In any other place 2003 would have not reached the third round. While some people prefer games to go out in rounds which dictate their strength I don’t mind a weaker entrant getting out of a weak, but interesting four-pack. Of course 2003 made it out without too much of a struggle, but at least we had a bit of discussion.

1998 has yet to give us a reason for it to not crush the competition, let alone lose. 1992 was a decent year in gaming and it fail to break 30%. You could argue SFF against Link to the Past and the other Nintendo games, but Link to the Past did hold up well against Ocarina of Time during the 2015 contest. The change in picture format is a huge benefit to 1998, while some years struggle to find eight games 1998 can easily rattle off eight games with decent strength on GameFAQs though I guess we still have to make room for Panzer Dragoon Saga for the few Saturn fans.

I expect 1998 to outperform its round 2 number. 2003 has terrible depth and Wind Waker is not something you want to have on your side when the opponent has Ocarina of Time. A tripling is very likely and personally I think 1998 should be able to break 80%.

If CT is our strongest game, and 1987 overperformed due to 1995's weak pic, it's possible 2001 is still an absolute beast and can win.

But clearly at this point one has to favor 1997. I think 8 games in the pic helps it. With 4 games, 2001's 1/2 punch may be emphasized more and make it do better.

I'm predicting 1998 by 5% or less wins this thing.

I'm not sure how many of the 9 above him also have 97 over 2001, but Allen should be in the top 5 heading into the finals. You know because of his love for FFVII that he'll likely have that winning...so if it does...then he wins. I doubt any of those 9 above him have 1997 going all the way.
