It's still a better game...

Ocarina of Time would still be the best game ever if some random dude named Bonzo was in it instead of Link.

I didn't argue that DKR would give a better pic, just it's a better game.

Though admittedly, having DRK probably helps more than having MK64 when going up against the strongest Mario Platformer ever, AND Mario RPG ever....

Yeah, I was all aboard the DKR train back in the 90s. It had a surprisingly robust story mode, a cool overworld, secrets in the overworld and on the tracks, upgradeable power-ups, freakin BOSS races, and three different vehicle types. It also wasn't as random as Mario Kart (you knew which power ups you were getting and could strategize accordingly).

It just seemed like DKR had Mario Kart 64 outclassed in every possible way, BUT I couldn't really analyze level layouts back then, so I don't know which game had the better tracks.

MK had the longer tracks, I would argue DKR had the better designed tracks as a whole. But the MK ones definitely had better scenery and things around them and such.

Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing were both great for different reasons. Was cool withe either representing the year

i would argue the opposite. i think in this contest years need wide representation, but not that wide. i think its more important to get at least one mario, final fantasy and zelda game pic in your years rotation set(or 2 out of 3 if all 3 is impossible) than anything else. getting mariokart 64 in there is more likely to level the playing field rather than cause SFF or whatever you think might happen. DKR wont add much IMO

I have to say I never liked Diddy Kong Racing. It always felt clunky where MK64 felt smooth

I'm gonna be showing my young age here but I don't really think MK64 or DKR are all that great, especially compared to what we have today. DKR is probably better but they're both in the "fine I guess," categories for me. MK didn't get great until Double Dash IMO. I felt this way about MK64 at release too, but I didn't play DKR until like 2007.

I should probably play Crash Racing to see how I feel about that at some point.

While this match has more votes (we're looking at around 19k total) it is unlikely that a significant rally is occurring. A spike in vote total was already apparent early in the match with the expect total hovering around 19k. We saw this last contest when we went from four matches to two. I guess people felt pressured to vote in both matches.

There was probably also another increase in vote totals going from 2 matches per day to 1 match per day in the last contest, but this was impossible to determine because we had 1 match per day for the final 3 days of the contest, where rallying significantly inflated the vote totals of all 3 matches.

Yes, the only reason it is so powerful is because it began LoZ, FF and Metroid.

Are you saying Final Fantasy is from 1987? It's from 1990, The SMB3 year.

It's not as easy to get that done when there isn't a tangible mistake with the match pic. This time, we had two Crashes in the pic.

The contest goes by North American dates. Like Pokemon just had it's 20th anniversary celebration last year because it came out in Japan in 1996. However, it came out in the US in 1998 so it counts as a 1998 game in the contest.

I knew this.... Just forgot because I am constantly inundated by FF 30th stuff...

Anyway, my god though, I didn't know it came out that late in the NES's life in NA, it makes sense why we never got II or III here now... FF came out the last real year of the NES before the SNES ran it over.

Match XXX – Round 3 – 1997 vs. 1996

Previous Results

1997
Round 1: Defeated 1999, 77.25% - 22.75%
Round 2: Defeated 2007, 70.98% - 29.02%

1996
Round 1: Defeated 1989, 83.69% - 16.31%
Round 2: Defeated 2000, 51.38% - 48.62%

Analysis

I still maintain that with a better picture 2000 would have defeated 1996 and I would have still been alive in the guru. My bracket had 2000 winning this match so it’ll be an auto loss for me. Anyway back to the actual match. 1997 will be going into the match as the favourite. Final Fantasy VII is arguably the strongest game between the two years though I’d imagine quite a few people would go with Super Mario 64. After that Super Mario RPG is likely the next strongest game, but due to its overlap with Super Mario 64 it may not bring as much support.

In terms of depth I would have to give 1997 the advantage. Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64 likely take out Crash Bandicoot and Kirby Super Star though SFF/LFF may be the only way 1996 could win. If Nintendo fans can concentrate around 1996 while Playstation fans are split an upset could occur. I think there is a good chance of this happening. Nintendo SFF has always been massive; I mean we saw it in 2009 though GoldenEye 007 held up relatively well which could spell disaster for the year. Meanwhile outside of characters/games from the same series Playstation tends to avoid a lot of SFF. Sure Final Fantasy VII and Castlevania: SotN would easily win over Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider, but they could end up costing more votes.

I don’t think 1996 will cause the upset. The lack of Resident Evil hurts an already shallow 1996. I still feel 2000 would have won this match and if this match turns out to be close I will at least feel in the back of my mind a bit shortchanged.

Congratulations to DP Oblivion in the Guru Contest!
Something occurred to me. We all assume that the site is full of adults. But if Allen is telling the truth and unique visitors are higher than ever, maybe it's only old school people that use the homepage because they are old and used to it? Thus biasing the poll voting, making it totally different than the site overall?

Anyone think this could be possible?

I actually do think this site skews older than most gaming sites (though all gaming sites should be older than they used to be, as gamers are getting older), but the homepage visitors might skew even older than the boards.
Yeah, I think it's safe to say that the homepage visitors and regular visitors to the site skew older than the people who just Google their games and come here when a guide shows up.

Then again, I'm a few hours short of 30 and I do the same thing when I need gaming help, and I visit this place daily.

I've concluded that this is likely the case. I'm willing to bet a lot of younger people visit the site (under 18 people) but most of them are bypassing the homepage from a Google search result and never see the polls. Because of this, the age polls do not accurately represent the average age of the site visitors as a whole. The people voting in the polls are the long-time users of the site and know where to find the poll, so this skews the age poll results quite a bit.

The age poll polls the people who visit the front page. It may not match the demographics of the users on the site, but it should roughly match the demographics of the people who visit the front page and vote in polls.
