DKC's never gotten a fair chance to show its stuff in these contests, but I'd place it at least a step above DKC2 and was impressed with it in the 2009 contest. It managed to beat Doom in R1 despite LttP there to drain the SNES life force out of the poll.

DKC1 would lose to DKC2. Just like MGS3 beat MGS1.

I feel really confident in the opposite. DKC2 may be the internet darling, but no one actually dislikes DKC1. It's still beloved, the hype behind it at the time was huge (GameFAQs is old enough to remember this), and it probably has a much higher playrate. I'd be really surprised if Diddy pulled that one out.

I feel like we'd still have over 500 perfect brackets if we didn't get cucked by Allen twice. He knows it too.
2 line break(s), 160 characters allowed
Even in RL I see people saying they like 2 more.

The only DKC game I beat when I was a kid was 3, I only beat 2 like two years ago. And I also prefer 2.

It's the perfect 2D platformer.
(edited 5/14/2017 7:44:15 AM)report
As for DKC1, it's great but feels like a prototype to 2. It has less varied envirinments, enemies more similar to each other, and every level is pure platforming hell instead of something more unique.

It's similar to how Megaman Battle Network or Mario Party or Sonic or the original Megaman compare to their sequels. It took two games to get the formula perfect.
Let me rephrase: I'm not sure how they'd do in a direct match against each other (though I believe the original still wins), I'd take 1 over the same competition every time. Like I'd take 1 to easily beat Xenoblade when 2 barely managed to do it. I'd also take it to do better than 38% against SotN.

Man this sucks, my 2 gut reaction upset picks failed out by a couple hundred votes, and now my gut pick of 1991 winning by being a more historical year is also bunk.

Shame that the contest has devolved into 'add up the xstats of all the games in the match picture' instead of something more meaningful.

Currently, 2002 would need to beat 2004 with 55.11% for 1991 and 1994 to be equal.

I don't think the transitive property works with a contest like this, but either way there is not a doubt in my mind 2004 would get demolished in that hypothetical match.

Fall 2004 was a time where most genres were getting some new stuff. It was a pretty solid time. Some of those games were meh imo, but w/e

Nov/Dec 2004 off the top of my head, a bunch of 2s and 3s in series

MGS3
Halo 2
World of Warcraft
Half Life 2
KotoR 2 (is this liked or not by most? I never got into the series but i think people like em right)
Jak 3
Ratchet n Clank Up Your Arsenal
Metroid Prime 2
Everquest 2

Its not Fall 2001 (or the rest of 2001 for that matter), or 1998 as a whole, or 1999 PC gaming, etc. But Fall 2004 was pretty f***ing stacked for just 2 months. If i recall the rest of 2004 was pretty trash though

edit: Forgot San Andreas, pretty much the only GTA game i liked. That was I think november 04 as well

MGS3, Metroid Prime 2, Half-Life 2, Paper Mario TTYD, Halo 2, Pikmin 2 - 2004 has depth to rival every year minus maybe 2001 and 1998.

It was a huge year at the time, and I'm sure some of that "status" has stuck with it to this day. While things can change in R3, right now it does seem like 2004 is a step ahead of every other year from that 2002-2011 decade. If true, that would be due entirely to its depth, because it doesn't have the strength up top to match games like TP, Wind Waker, and even Metroid Prime/Skyrim (maaaybe MGS3 can hang with those?).

I forgot to mention this earlier, but IMO 2004's apparent strength spells even more good things for our good buddy, 2001.

Disliked by most (at least relative to the stellar original) at launch, but there is a small subsection of fans who consider it a GOAT-caliber game after patches are installed which basically re-create the game's entire ending section.

I always felt it was one of the most drab and depressing games I've ever played. Very un-Star Wars, which I guess might appeal to some people since it was different.

I'm back from my trip...

It's a shame 2000 lost in a close match, eliminating me from the guru. While Pokemon G/S was a bit of a long shot in this picture format Diablo II should have made it over Deus Ex.

1991 isn't doing that badly, 2002 was a pretty good year too. Especially after what 2004 did to 1994. Just because the 90s were going to be the strongest years doesn't mean it would have crushed the stronger 00s years.

As for 2002 vs. 2004 I'd expect the match to be very close. All four games in the picture are pretty even. I guess 2002 would have a bit of a picture advantage with Metroid Prime and Kingdom Hearts being listed first.

Yeah, I care more about the games I played and loved than the ones I didn't, and 2004 has one of the best lineups out there.

Also as perhaps the biggest DKC2 fan on this board, I don't know how you can feel at all confident that it would be stronger than DKC1, directly or indirectly. None of its performances have been all that encouraging. DKC1 has never gotten a fair shake though. It was saddled with LttP in both of its matches in 2009, and the second match was literally LttP/Super Metroid/SMK/DKC1.

I think I flubbed that one, yeah. I forgot about FFIV's performance in the last contest where it killed Deus Ex and avoided the doubling against LttP. I doubt DKC could replicate those (SFF aside).
And we've had no reason to talk about it, but I wonder if 1992 would have been able to beat both of these years given the ideal four pictures:

LttP
Super Mario Kart
Sonic 2
Mortal Kombat

It feels like those bottom three tie out against 1991's supporting cast, while LttP is a big step ahead of everything else.

KH2 with 80% of Gurus is an overwhelming favorite. KH2 outperforming Oracle expectations in one case is more that people ridiculously overrate SSBM's raw strength.

Besides, I'm not talking about looking good in defeat. Kingdom Hearts does that all the time. Sora always makes Squall look bad whenever they're in a match together, but he never beats him, not even with Cloud in the match. What's the last big win?

Don't we already have evidence that Sonic 1 is stronger than Sonic 2 in contests? Too lazy to look it up; someone correct me if I'm wrong. DKC feels like it could eaisly go the same way. The fans of both like 2 more, but 1 was just a bigger, more hyped game that reached more people, while DKC2 came out when people were already starting to look towards the next console generation. I could see DKC2 beating DKC1 directly due to some sort of rSFF (would't count on it though) but I'd expect DKC1 is stronger generally.

Mega Man 1 isn't in any way comparable to either since MM1 is not a big game like Sonic 1 and DKC1 are.

I'd have a perfect bracket if 2006 got better match pictures, grrr.
27/28 pts - The GameFAQs Best Year In Gaming Contest
Sonic 1 vs. Sonic 2 is quite debatable IMO. In 2009 Sonic 1 got 32% against Super Mario Bros. 3 and Sonic 2 got 34% against Final Fantasy VI.

In a head to head match I think Sonic 2 wins

I was talking about popular opinion, not contest strength.
So anyone besides me entertaining the idea of 2005 beating 2003

My idea is that while KOTOR and Wind Waker are equal to or above ever 2005 entrant in the pic

Every other 2005 pic is way stronger than Final Fantasy X-2/Disgaea

I think the match pics are going to screw 2005's chances, even though 2005 has a better lineup.

FFX-2 vs God of War goes to 03
Wind Waker vs Phoenix Wright goes to 03
KotoR vs RE4 goes to 05
Disgaea vs Shadow of the Colossus goes to 05

The problem is people will instantly know 03 is a Zelda year but have to wait until the 3rd pic to see 05 is RE4's and SotC's year. 05 still has a shot to win, at this point most people might be actually looking into the full year before voting.
lol @ anyone thinking FFX-2 > God of War

FFX-2 is one of the most loathed FF's.
Hell, I'd take FFXIII over it.
If some people actually click on the question marks, for 2003 that adds Call of Duty, Pokemon RSE, Prince of Persia The Sands of Time, and Soul Calibur II to what's featured in the pictures. 2005 just gets Civilization IV.

FFX-2 could win if God of War went the way of Assassin's Creed II. Kratos looked pretty bad in 2013.

I've had about all I can handle of your anti-Melee crusade, which is, to this day, the only game to beat BOTH Chrono Trigger and FFVII in 1v1 matches.

It could have beaten Zelda, too :(
Get the X out.
