The 1996 match is close enough that 2000 might well lose due to the pic, though the match is far from over.

1997 impressing. Good to see. Vs. 2001 should be the match of the contest. 2001 is clearly the favorite, but don't count 1997 out. I think 1997 loses very respectably, myself.

I'm not sure 2001 is a clear favorite. 2007 and 2008 are probably pretty even years, and 1997 and 2001 put up pretty similar numbers.

1996 your days are numbered.

Unfortunately my days are also numbered because even if 2000 pulls through here, my 2000 > 1997 pick is looking pretty sketchy right about now.
I guess DpObliVion gets to be in my sig now. His knowledge of video game popularity contests far surpasses my own.

I think 2008 is fairly stronger than 2007, the only reason being Fallout 3

Also, 2007 and 2008 both basically got their best possible lineup of pics, so there shouldn't have been any wild variance in the performance as a result.

Yeah, I can't really see 2000 besting 1997. Why'd you think it would?

How strong is 2008's big three these days anyway? It's hard to tell. MGS4 is the only one we got a semi-clear reading on last time.
I'm very impressed by 1997 here. I thought 2007 could have been able to steal another couple percent, but FFVII is keeping this nicely over 70%. It could still dip with the day vote, though anything in the high 60s looks good here. I have no idea how 2007 vs 2008 goes.
spooky96 5/12/2017 10:20:49 PM#360
Brawl is dead
MGS is doing garbage in the recent contests

Fallout 3 seems stable of them all.

But just look at 2007. It has nothing, just a bunch of generic western games and a Mario game which got destroyed by Super Metroid.

you mean three of the strongest western franchises we have?

40% on Super Metroid isn't a bad number either because that's basically 40% on Majora's Mask and LttP, if you want to do straight extrapolation...!
Mario Fatigue is striking!
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.

Haha saying 40% of MM/LttP does sound impressive all of a sudden though

strongest western franchise? That honestly doesn't mean much. Halo 1 (probably the strongest Halo) did like 21% FF7, which is pretty bad. Bioshock has never been a powerhouse either. Lastly, ME did well enough to take out SMG2 last contest, but seeing how weak Galaxy 1 is, 2 was obviously supposed to be significantly weaker.

Yeah, I can't really see 2000 besting 1997. Why'd you think it would?

My pre-contest thoughts were that having a variety of games was more important than the actual strength of the games themselves. So like in this case an oversimplified version of it is something like "2000 takes a decent chunk (but still a minority) of the Square JRPG vote with FFIX but then wins the entirety of the Nintendo vote through MM and Pokemon GSC." Basically 2000 looks like it has a foothold with every fanbase, whereas 1997 doesn't appear to.

It sort of makes sense to me still, but I think just the gaming community is a lot less segregated than I was imagining it to be beforehand.
I guess DpObliVion gets to be in my sig now. His knowledge of video game popularity contests far surpasses my own.

2000's got this.

Not at all. It's either a toss up or 1996 is the slight favorite.

SMRPG's weakness in Europe might hurt it overnight, but 1996 should recover in the day.

No one should be confident in either year right now.
And who could forget Vivi/Mario!

FFIX and Deus Ex mainly. And although Nintendo is below average in Europe, at least Majora's Mask and Perfect Dark were released in Europe (unlike Super Mario RPG).

1996 by the hour:

1:00 | 51.72%
2:00 | 49.29%

Please keep in mind the hour-to-hour fluctuation of the percentages are probably around 5-10 times what we have grown accustomed to over the years, as a result of the drastically lower votals. So, in the old days 51.72% in the Power Hour would be a very substantial lead for games with similar trends, today, if you reran this match tomorrow, the Power Hour itself could end up quite different.

20 vote lead. Will be curious to see if this maintains tomorrow. Traditional thinking should be that overnight and morning will favour 2000, but Zelda also has a really good SNV, so it's hard to say.

2000 is by far the better year but 1996 winning is good for my bracket.

Neither have a chance next round against 97 though.

So, if 2000 holds on, could we see these eight games representing the year?

Majora's Mask
Pokemon Gold/Silver
Final Fantasy IX
Diablo 2
Perfect Dark
Deus Ex
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Skies of Arcadia

That's a pretty damn formidable eight games to represent the year.
