Well, at least 2000 isn't represented solely by Perfect Dark and Diablo 2. Because that was a legitimate concern until one hour before lockdown, and a sign of things to come by the looks of it.

Yeah, I had 1996 > 2000 until an hour before lockdown. When I saw that we'd be getting four pictures per year to start Round 1, I switched to 2000 because I assumed it would at least get three of its top four. Woops.

That's like... the most annoying way I've ever missed a prediction.

I didn't even consider 2000 to be a threat to 1996, because I was too worried it might be screwed against 1990.

This might be the most agonizing way to actually win a contest match.

It's not a matter of "agreeing with this line of thinking." This is a matter of "there was always a chance SBAllen wouldn't include them." It's stupid you have to pick matches like that, but we did.

Well, yeah. I'm not disagreeing with that - just disagreeing with the notion that 2000 loses this if it gets Pokemon GSC. The difference between Deus Ex/Perfect Dark and GSC is massive. Add in Diablo 2 and it's probably a rout. Also I just checked and Perfect Dark is actually almost as weak as Deus Ex! The fix was in

yeah I never said that

I just said doing the math the way you're doing it isn't necessarily always going to add up

I think 1991 will defy the "math" in a lot of ways

By the way, just because we're doing match pics after this round, doesn't mean all of this is going away next round. There's no guarantee that they'll be in optimal scrolling order, or in some cases, the best eight will be picked.

Well yeah, there's no guarantee about what pics Allen chooses for each year. It's still kind of a crapshoot.

This is the contest we needed something like the Battle Bracket to adjust on the fly.
Well, 96 is rolling now. If this winds up being a runaway victory, I'll take solace in knowing that I was probably just plain wrong. I'd much rather lose because I made a bad prediction than because of picture malarkey.
Team Rocket Elite 5/12/2017 9:38:46 PM#311
That's a good point. SBAllen is still choosing which games make the match picture and in which order. I don't think we've really had much of a problem with the picture selected for a game. The problems have been with which games are even on the picture. Full Throttle and Rayman have picture submissions for 1995 so they can show up again.
My bracket got smashed by DpObliVion.

Speaking of math...

FF7 - 42.78
Symphony of the Night - 30.1944
Goldeneye 007 - 28.81953144
Parappa - like, 10, it's Parappa

Super Mario Galaxy - 29.46328047
Bioshock - 28.46677734
Mass Effect - 26.79342373
Portal - 23.713776

1997 - 116.29
2007 - 108.44

1997 has a small numbers advantage...it's slaughtering. Depth matters, but an anchor like FF7 matters a hell of a lot too.

Majora's Mask - 36.846
Final Fantasy IX - 31.7768
Perfect Dark - 19.48054359
Deus Ex - 17.10385588

Super Mario 64 - 40.255
Super Mario RPG - 32.8256
Resident Evil - 24.95938966
Crash Bandicoot - I don't know, 14? Crash sux

2000 - 105.20
1996 - 112.01

The front page matches this one much more closely.

I dunno about 1997 being the obvious second strongest year, but.... 2001 vs. 1997 looks intriguing at this point. 2001 had the stronger opponent in 2008 as opposed to 2007, but 1997 is probably going to end up with the higher percentage.

And hey, 2000 basically stalled 1996 over the course of four updates.

Yeah, I think it's close between them. Just like 1997's percentage isn't a whole lot higher than 2001's! Hence, a very even-looking match between '97 and '01.

Question - if consoles were match pic represented, what matters more? The N64 or the PS2?
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
1997 is mainly held together by Final Fantasy VII, and FF7 is a choke artist lately. I mean 1997 doesn't have bad sub-anchors or depth, but without FF7 it'd be one of the weaker 90s years.

I take 2007 over 2008 tbh. I think people that would take 2008 are putting too much faith in Brawl, which being 10 years old now, doesn't have anywhere near the strength it did during GotD

1997's problem is that it has no possible 4th. SotN and Goldeneye are great backups, but everything else is utter garbage. It's not coming into play now, but it'll be a big problem when 2001 comes around.

I don't know about Mario Kart 64 and Star Fox 64 being garbage. They're probably not far off 2001's fourth and fifth strongest games in strength. While going 8-deep certainly helps years like 2001 and 1998 (which didn't need it), it also helps 97 a bit because it gets SOME real Nintendo representation up there.

2001's unique characteristic is that it's literally like... 20 games deep, but it's hampered from showing that off.
2000 is still fighting at least. Given the lack of trends though...

...so Majora has kept even with Mario 64 over the course of SIX updates now. The match is far from over (contrary to how I felt about 1995/1987 an hour in).
