There was also Conker

When did that come
Out?

2001, about a month after Paper Mario

Was it after Stadium 2?

Stadium 2 came out about 3 weeks later in North America

So PM was the last great game lock, and then Stadium 2 or CBFD depending on how you feel about the games would have been the last ounce of greatness the console had.

What a shame for the console with the best game ever to go out like that, with such a wimper
So here's a fun comparison.

Melee - 36.72
Final Fantasy X - 34.48
Grand Theft Auto 3 - 23.28998379
Halo - 18.643524

Brawl - 32.697876 (estimate)
Fallout 3 - 32.625474
Metal Gear Solid 4 - 27.10909814
Persona 4 - 24.13604137

2001 - 122.132
2008 - 116.58

Quite a bit closer than the poll is! I think this helps confirm three things:
1. 2001 is a year that's greater than the sum of its parts. People recognize that year as being a landmark year for games, and it's easy to see why.
2. 2008 is a year that's lesser than the sum of its parts. Lots of hyped games around that era failed to live up to expectations. MGS4 is poster child of that sentiment. Fallout 3 is still well-remembered but it's sequels have made it less important, and Persona 4 - while popular nowadays - is hardly a landmark game.
3. Putting Melee up against Brawl in the match pics is pretty mean.
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
I'd love to see Melee/Brawl again in a future contest.

1987 peaked just a couple of hours ago, at 47.92%. Crazy how it has been creeping up all day, teetering near the 50/50 split

I think 00 is the stronger year for sure but it's a little nerfed here. not 06 nerfed, but enough for 96 to pull through.

Melee wins that. Think the transitive strength of Smash goes to the next game, but the diehard 'SMASH BORS IS TOTALLY A REALY FIGHTING GAME!!!!!!!111111111111 FOX ONLY NO ITEMS FINAL DESTINATION' fanboys will always stick with Melee over any other game in the series.

So if 1987 had been similarly shackled by forced diversity and gotten, say, Zelda 1/R-Type/Maniac Mansion/Some Master System Exclusive Nobody Cares About instead of 4 straight NES games, what do people think the percentage would be?

I doubt more than 60%, probably doesn't change much. People are smart, they know Metroid and Mega Man. I actually think 1987 needs pics even less because it is such an iconic year for starting these franchises.

Of course, you would be deliberately handicapping 1987 instead of bringing 1995 up so it's not a fair comparison. Even if 1995 had an optimal set it wouldn't improve its chances.

The question we should ask regarding match pics isn't "are these the strongest games" but "is this a fair cross section" and I think 1987 passes the latter, 1995 probably fails it but not by much.

I couldn't give a s*** about a fair cross section. I want the strongest games.

I feel confident in 2000 (more confident than I felt in neutered-pic 1995 today). It has more depth, and I'm still not sure whether voters will look at that 1996 pic and get Mario fatigue.

If 96 wins with a high percentage, I'll swallow the bitter pill. If it barely wins though, I'll probably be salty about pics again.
LeonhartFour 5/12/2017 8:51:21 PM#217
why would you get Mario fatigue

why would that be a thing people feel
Mario fatigue is not a thing that should exist among decent people.

Team Rocket Elite 5/12/2017 8:53:27 PM#219
I don't think Mario fatigue would happen from just 2 games. If it was 4/4, that might be a different story but I think 2 is okay.
My bracket got smashed by DpObliVion.
Congrats to DpObliVion for winning the BGE15 Guru Contest!
Yes, if 2000 loses because of the pic, I will be quite buttirritated.

I mean people see a whole lot of Mario in one pic and become naturally drawn (consciously or subconsciously) to the other pic, which has way more variety.

Call it Mario overlap if you want.

unless you love Mario

like, I don't think people are naturally drawn to variety

are you saying OoT/MM/LttP/BotW would be bad to have under one banner because it's all Zelda

Possibly (or probably), but the other games being represented are very weak. Everyone knows the two Mario games are carrying 1996.

Eh, I'd take Resident Evil to at least be equal with 2000's other two games in the match pic. 1996's disadvantage isn't as pronounced as you're making it out to be.
I've got this feeling that in a few minutes, I'm more likely to say "there goes bracket because it looks like 2000 can beat 1997" than I am to say "there goes bracket because 1996 is winning today."

We'll find out in a couple!
Haste_2 5/12/2017 8:57:15 PM#227
I can't help but wonder if 1997 will disappoint today. It looked pretty good at 77% on 1999, but the problem is that 1999 has practically nothing outside of FF8, which got SFFed... we'll see what happens.

5 minute reaction: 1996 has this and it won't be super close.

But it will be close enough that I think the result flips if the 2000 pic is decent.
