hey guys, I want your input on something. do you think those Zelda games - Ocarina, Skyward, TP - look more or less the same in these pictures? I'm kinda wondering if people can even tell that today's pic has Ocarina, or that 2011's Zelda pic was actually Skyward Sword.

My faith in voters is shaken after yesterday, but I have to think they know approximately when each specific Zelda game came out
Team Rocket Elite 5/10/2017 6:08:20 PM#158
Ghirahim is clearly in the Skyward Sword picture. If you've played Skyward Sword, you would know that's him. Similar thing with Twilight Princess and the wolf in the picture. If you haven't played the games, you would at least know the picture is from a Zelda game you haven't played even if you don't know which one. Neither of them would get mistaken for OoT or anything like that. OoT's picture is a lot more questionable, though. I don't recognize the image and a voter only has 5 seconds to read the small subtitle. OoT may be relying on the fact the people might just know it came out in 1998.
My bracket got smashed by DpObliVion.

yeah, as a non-player they all kinda look the same. I don't think Skyward benefited all that much but that pic ambiguity can't hurt, especially when 06 sucked so bad.

Nah, the art's too different for most of them.

I think the only one where this might be the case is people mixing up ALttP and LA. They came out in 1992 and 1993 and have very similar pre-OoT art and logo. So it is possible to manipulate LA art in order for people to think that it's ALttP.

I can also see maybe people mixing up OoT and MM since they have identical art, but that's a much bigger stretch.
If we stick to official period correct art, yes, but look at the art they actually used. If I just saw the art they're using for OoT without also seeing the year, I'd assume it was for Twilight Princess, especially since the logo is too small to read on my screen. They're definitely not using the vintage art for that image.

Analysis

During the pre-contest this entire four-pack got a lot of debate though I’m not too sure if either 2013 or 2015 can cause an upset. 2013 is filled with a bunch of mid-tier games and on any other site I would argue it has a pretty nice set of games, but this is GameFAQs and from the 2015 contest these games did okay, but were nothing special.

While I have 2003 winning this four-pack I do feel a bit nervous about its strength. The Wind Waker is clearly the strongest game between the two years while Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic brings some depth, but after that there isn’t much else. I’m not sure how I feel about Final Fantasy X-2 on one hand it’s nice to have a Final Fantasy games on your side, but on the other it wasn’t a very popular one.

I expect 2013 to put up a respectable performance, but I don’t see it threatening 2003. Unlike 2006 the picture order is a bit more favourable for 2003 with Final Fantasy and Zelda in the first two slots and its weakest game in the last slot.

Analysis

Relatively speaking 2005 didn’t perform too well against 1978. If we kept the results of the 70s vote-in constant the year is expected to get 56.79% against 2009. Of course using the results of a multi-way poll may not be the wisest choice. If there was an underperformance, one reason for it could be due to 2005’s strongest games being placed third and fourth in the picture rotation. If true 2005 could be in for another bumpy match as their opponent begins with The Witcher 3 against their God of War, whom is overrated in the 2010 x-stats and is likely weaker today relative to back then.

Conversely Rocket League as the second game probably helps 2005. While we don’t know its strength it does push Undertale and Fallout 4 into direct matches against Resident Evil 4 and Shadow of the Colossus provided people actually wait to see all of the pictures.

Actually scratch what I said in the previous write-up. I’m getting a feeling that this could be a repeat of 2011/2006. Undertale is likely stronger than what its x-stat value says while I expect Fallout 4 to have some strength. Neither game would defeat Resident Evil 4 or Shadow of the Colossus, but if a significant number of people are no longer watching the picture it may not reverse the beating The Witcher 3 will give to God of War.

I think you're underestimating Rocket League, too. Maybe not because it's Gamefaqs, but Rocket League is kind of indie the way Half Life 2 was indie, and if not quite as popular, still huge for a non-shooter with pretensions to esports.
Team Rocket Elite 5/10/2017 7:33:48 PM#171
Just how strong is X-2 anyways? I feel like people don't really talk about the game very much so I have no idea how opinions on it might have changed over the years. It's not like FF13 where I still see people talk about how they dislike it.

2015 would probably do fairly well in Europe due to The Witcher 3 (much stronger there vs. the US/Canada). That's not even considering a possible rally.

I guess we can use 2006 as a comparison point

5 minutes: 2006 with 56.55%
5 minutes: 2005 with 59.14%

also, we aren't dealing with a pic situation here. early voters have a knowledge edge on people who vote later in the match and so pictures don't mean as much. maybe 2005 is okay?

While I hope there's no UT rallying, 2015 really should get this. Fallout 4, MGSV, Witcher 3, even Undertale itself. For me at least it's a pretty top tier year.
