The match was pretty stable after the first hour.

1994/2004 probably has the biggest trends we've seen so far, but it makes sense if you look at Geolocation. 1994 got 61% in the U.S. and Canada, but 2004 got 55% in the U.K.

I'm thinking 1995/1987 could have some good trends too, since 1995 is extremely dependent on Chrono Trigger and that game is almost non-existent in the UK. 1995/1986 wasn't the best match to show off sharp trend changes because that was a massive blowout.

I actually doubt that. My understanding was that the NES wasn't that big in the UK either. Even back then, UK was much more into the Master Systems and computer gaming.

Only on the P5 one. I know what you tried to do (using the cover art and shrinking it without any other changes) because I tried the same thing and I didn't like how it looked so I did it the manual way.

I'm a bit surprised 2011 was the slight favorite overall, meaning the Gurus got owned by the casuals on this match.

Eh, a lot of people put a lot of stock in the seedings, and 2006 was a wildcard game

Surprised to see 2012 was the favorite. And very surprised that 1994 was the underdog.

The number of perfects plummeted. We actually might not see any perfects this contest. I thought we would.

this kinda makes me feel like 1995 might be in trouble? probably not logical

You mean against 1987, or 2001? Hard to see it losing to 1987, and 2001 was already the favorite.

When I woke up this morning, I was shocked to see FFVI at under 58%. Let's have some x-stat fun and throw all those games from 1994/2004 into creative's x-stat calculator! I will using Ngamer's x-stats (which were made by KamiKaze, I believe) I'll arbitrarily give Sonic 3 & Knuckles a 28% x-stat.

Character 140.5816.91%
Character 23815.63%
Character 33212.78%
Character 42810.99%
Character 522.548.65%
Character 625.8310.05%
Character 732.4913.01%
Character 830.2211.98%

Character 1-4 are 1994 games. Characters 5-8 are 2004 games. Add up each half and the top half gets. *drumroll*... 56.31% of the vote! Shoulda paid attention to the x-stats!

Interesting. Nice work!
I was wondering how the results would like if we just added up X-stat values. It being so close is kind of eerie!

I can't win though cause I was dumb and didn't pick 1998 to win it all :(

call me crazy but I'm not at all impressed with 98

but that's because I think pretty low of 93 whereas I think 98 could beat #2 and #3 combined

You mean you think 1998 could get 50+% on the second and third strongest years at the same time? I'd be shocked by that.
ff6man 5/9/2017 10:47:18 PM#123
Man, I'm pretty upset I'm not on the leaderboard yet. Here's hoping 2013 pulls the upset tomorrow.

I gotta admit, I was less confident with 2011 then I am with 2013, but 2013 appears to be a larger upset, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

I showed the matches to a few friends who are gamers but don't follow gamefaqs before the contest and we were split on opinions 3-1 for 2011 being the better year, but we all decided 2013 was the better year.

Let's compare 2005 and 2015 using x-stats and the games in the match pics.

Resident Evil 4 - 31.82113664
Shadow of the Colossus - 28.94601069
Phoenix Wright - 22.37199906
God of War - N/A

The Witcher 3 - 26.43743818
Fallout 4 - 23.79 (through GotY final against Witcher 3)
Undertale - 17.76783314
Rocket League - N/A

God of War has a 2010 x-stat value but I don't trust it at all. I think that series has fallen off big time since then. Pretty sure it would still be a lot stronger than Rocket League, though.

Undertale's value is also adjusted to a pre-rally & start-of-contest value. It's probably stronger now thanks to heightened exposure. Not much stronger though - lots of people here are still pissed off!

Essentially - every working part of 2015 has a stronger 2005 counterpart. 2015 has to pull some serious magic to win.

After that start, 98 looks like it is under performing a little bit, with how low the votals are, the board/bracket board is causing shenanigans, making the favourite look stronger then it actually is.

I'm a little worried about 2013/2003, mainly because Wind Waker's the anchor for '03 and it's not super impressive. But while 2013 would win on most sites thanks to GTAV, it has no power here, basically turning the match into The Last of Us/Wind Waker. And WW wins that easily.

RE4's directly stronger than The Witcher III, so '05 has that on lockdown, barring rally nonsense.
Come watch me on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/gameryogi
I still think 2003's very safe. KotOR is a fine #2, and Wind Waker is pretty popular around here.
I'd feel a lot safer about 2003 if Final Fantasy X-2 wasn't the headliner. That reeeally hurts. Disgaea is also pretty worthless.
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
Eh, at least the picture looks appealing. I agree Disgaea could have been replaced with something stronger. It may not be particularly strong itself, but Sands of Time is fondly remembered as a gem of that era - it should have made it.

I'm worried about 2003, because just like 2006, I personally like the year it's facing better, but I still picked it because I thought that's what the site would prefer.

Yeah like I said, every gamer I've asked prefers 2013. I'm surprised 2013 is considered such an upset pick. I guess zeldafaqs is just that strong and I've been here long enough that I should know that.

While I agree that RE4 probably trumps any one game from 2015, it seems to me that 2005 doesn't have much else going for it. I know Phoenix Wright and SOTC are very beloved, but aren't they also quite niche? Perhaps I'm wrong in thinking this, but I don't see them pushing all that many votes.

Meanwhile, 2015 has a Fallout, MGS, and Souls(ish). It's also recent enough that it doesn't rely on whatever is featured nearly as much as 2005.

I don't think it hurts that much. I also don't think 2013 is that strong of a year.
This contest is dead to me after 2004 losing to 1994, and I think Super Metriod is one of the ten best games i've ever played too.

I'm probably one of the few enjoying this contest, at least so far. Being 3rd on the leaderboard, 2nd in guru (and probably top after today, barring an unlikely rally for 2016) and 2nd in oracle for now will do that.

I probably drop 4 points tomorrow though as I have picked both underdogs (2013 and 2015), and I didn't have great picks in oracle today. It'll likely suck much more after today, yeah :).

I'd say the main reason 1998 is "underperforming" is that 1993 isn't turbofodder. Doom and Myst may not be big games on this site, but they ARE historically significant and people have heard of them.

Yeah, kinda the point of this exercise is to show how the first four months of 2017 would beat a bunch of other full years.
All the stars in the sky are waiting for you.
2017 has been exciting for games, but if we play the "contest strength" exercise, it's entirely banking on BotW being the strongest game since Skyrim (if not stronger). It's less a case of "17 would kick butt because of all these formidable games" and more a case of "BotW can single handedly beat every year since 2012."

Yeah, once the dust settles I think Persona 5 will join the ranks of Tales of Symphonia, Persona 4, and Xenoblade. Maybe a little stronger but not much. And NieR Automata isn't that big a deal.

Take away Zelda and most years would wreck January-April 2017.
