Off the top of my head I'm gonna say LttP over MM? MM's lead was because of rally spillover, though.

Another large comeback from the last contest was Skyrim/Metroid Prime, where Metroid Prime reached a max lead of 455. However, that match also had rally spillover because it happened one day after an Undertale match.

Majora's Mask came back from a 332-vote deficit against Super Metroid. That match had roughly 3 times as many votes as we've had so far this contest. 2011's lead may already be too big.

Looking ahead a bit, am I crazy for having 2015 beat 2005? RE4 is almost certainly going to draw more votes than any game from 2015 (barring another Undertale rally), but 2005 doesn't seem to have much else to offer as far as mass appeal. I'm assuming that the combination of Witcher 3 (still in the site's top five most popular games after two years), a Fallout, and a Metal Gear Solid will be enough to top RE4.

1994 doing pretty well. I'd say it has its weakest of the 4 games leading out too

I don't think we'll see much variance in this match, think we'll either see the vote go back and forth, or 2011 will win death by a million cuts style.

Oh wow a real match and 11 winning, uh oh rip bracket incoming, did vote for 11, loved that year personally, this definitely could be a case of being screwed by the match picture, what the hell at KH2 not being in the pic. 04 also putting a better then expected fight against 94, hopefully that performance is a sign of strength from 04 and not weakness from 94, not sure what to think atm.

The 06-11 showing could be a omen for the incoming 00 vs 96 match if 00 gets screwed by the match picture again

At least I'm feeling good about 91 now.

The only thing that could maybe explain 1994 looking really bad is voters thinking the FFVI picture is actually FFIII, since the FFVI picture says "Final Fantasy III".

For 1994, this hurts much worse than 1991's picture referring to FFIV as "Final Fantasy II" because FFVI is either the strongest or second strongest game of 1994. Also, 1991 got to face off against 1988, which is pathetically weak to begin with (and FFIV is much weaker than SMW anyways).

I think most people that know the game as FF6 should be aware of the whole US numbers thing, really.

Besides, we've got laughing sprite Kefka in the header image, which should mitigate FF6's identity problems.

And for the record, Oblivion is the Brawl of its series. Fans who don't like Skyrim will go to Morrowind instead. Oblivion's got too much janky gameplay decisions to hold up on its own, if you like Oblivion chances are you'll like Skyrim more and prefer that.

A lot of voters are forgetting that FFXII an KHII released that year because they aren't featured in the picture slides of the poll.

I don't think this is true, I think most voters are going to be aware if they care about years at all. FFXII just isn't worth that much, and KHII is strong but it's not a monster. TP, Oblivion, and KHII will only get you so far. 2011 has a Zelda and an Elder Scrolls too, a big JRPG, and a ton of great backup games. 2006 was never really seen as an especially good year.

Anyway, RIP my bracket, I had the 2004 upset pick. At least it will be somewhat close now.

Interesting geolocation results for this one. 1994 has a commanding lead in North America, but is being held back by most of Europe. This should mean it recovers somewhat later on but we will see.

I think it's the younger and non-American votes that are holding back 1994 and that's why so many people here overestimated it.

1991 should have the same problem. The "Mario + Sonic back-to-back = all opponents dead" theory doesn't work well for voters who were born 10 years after that.

Yeah, 2011's lead is still increasing, I think barring some insane ASV (Which lol is not happening, rip KH II picture) Think it's safe to say this one is done with how the Vtotals are

2004 is impressing me a lot, that year could of had done quite a bit of damage in a different spot in the bracket, really hoping that this is because of 04 being strong then 94 being weak, I tend to favour 04 being stronger then I gave it credit it.

Metal_DK 5/9/2017 5:21:47 AM#428
2006 wont have an ASV because people who were gaming at a young age (say 8 or 9) in 2006 are now 19/20. If that person was 12 in 2006 they are now in their mid 20s...2011 would have a better ASV than 2006.

Also kids barely come here anymore, its clearly an aging population on gfaqs.

Yeah, 500 votes in this contest really is about 2K + in earlier contests, I would be shocked if this result got turned around at this point.

And also true on the kiddies, all they give a crap about at this point is social media sites and pseudo like sites like reddit and etc, which is a blight on society but that is another topic.

Skyrim lined up against Oblivion, LoZ:TP for the last pic after people already see LoZ:SS in the first pic, Gears of War instead of KH2...2006 couldn't catch a break. These pics probably made the difference.

Impressed with 2004 here! I don't hold this against 1994 at all.

I wouldn't overstate the effect of the pics. For two reasons:

1. If somebody would be swayed by KHII, they probably know what year it came out.
2. 2011 got Mortal Kombat, the weakest game shown in either year, instead of Batman, Portal, Pokémon, etc.

I agree that the Zeldas should be lined up though.

Also, regarding 1994 and its geolocation results, bear in mind that in Europe, there was no FFVI on the SNES and Mega Man never took off, so we're looking at that year being just Super Metroid and Donkey Kong Country. 1991 should give it a kicking there.

It's not really to do with deliberate memorisation of years, it's more about simply remembering when you did something. Surely a big fan of a game on a dedicated video game website, voting in a poll about years in gaming would remember when that game came out. Voters are smart, we know they are smart, so why act like they are not?

It'd be an interesting test to ask long-time gamers off of GameFAQs their five favorite games, then ask them if they knew what years they came from. I don't know how well people would really do on that kind of quiz...I'd guess 3/5 for a lot of people though.

My suspicion's that people know estimated ranges for a lot of games, but they don't just have an immediate memory of every game that came out each year without seeing the games beside the year.

This. I was stupid and carried 86 into the QF because I thought half of games were released that year, when it was 87 in NA.

Which is another reason this contest kinda sucks cause localization ruins it

Steam was originally hated in 2004. Steam didnt start to become benevolent DRM till 2007ish
Xbox Live isnt a game, but its important sure
World of Warcraft wasn't mainstream really until the South Park episode and Mr. T commercials. Obviously it was still huge at launch but wasnt mainstream culture yet.

Under "absolutely impacted everything you play" the final should be 1985 vs 2007 no question.
