I know years for a lot of games I love, but there are also lots I don't know. Had to look up when Persona 3 first came out, for example.

The sentence structure's a bit awkward, my bad. I meant I played the SNES translation before the official PS1 translation was released.

I've only ever played the PS1 version of FFV, which is probably why it's my least favorite of the ones I've played. I guess I should give the GBA version a go one of these days, but I'm also not a huge fan of the job system, so I don't know if a revamped translation will be enough to sell me on the game on a replay.

GBA translation is a huge step up, no pirate speak Faris and no butchered enemy names.

Four Job Fiesta's coming up soon and is a great way to play even for those who haven't played before, so I recommend joining that.

Also, regarding 1994 and its geolocation results, bear in mind that in Europe, there was no FFVI on the SNES and Mega Man never took off, so we're looking at that year being just Super Metroid and Donkey Kong Country. 1991 should give it a kicking there.

Mega Man doing poorly in Europe is basically only the UK and Ireland. It does better in the rest of Europe.

1995 has a similar issue in the UK since Chrono Trigger wasn't released there except for Chrono Trigger DS. 1995 is extremely dependent on Chrono Trigger, and it clearly shows when 1995 got under 80% in the UK.

How is that possible?? Super Metroid and FFVI were great games, but we're talking about the most beloved FPS of all time and the game that defined MMOs and literally become a worldwide household name.

World of Warcraft lost rather cleanly to Chrono Cross and Paper Mario and didn't really impress against Animal Crossing.

Very disappointed in 1994. Will be hard to pick it over 1991. Maybe 2004 is a powerhouse, but I think 1991 is the favorite at the moment.

Which given the results so far is quite surprising to me. I'd think the 1-2 punch of 1994 would be too much for 1991.

LusterSoldier posted...
The only thing that could maybe explain 1994 looking really bad is voters thinking the FFVI picture is actually FFIII, since the FFVI picture says "Final Fantasy III".

For 1994, this hurts much worse than 1991's picture referring to FFIV as "Final Fantasy II" because FFVI is either the strongest or second strongest game of 1994. Also, 1991 got to face off against 1988, which is pathetically weak to begin with (and FFIV is much weaker than SMW anyways).

Oh wow good point, I hadn't even looked at the picture. That could definitely hurt if pics matter at all.

Worldwide household name? LOL no. Very, very few things are worldwide household names. You're talking stuff like Coke and McDonald's.

Also WoW is mostly hated by gamers who don't play it, and not just on GameFAQs.

Analysis

This is what you get when you mix strong games with very good depth. Don’t let Panzer Dragoon Saga in the match picture fool you there are at least a half dozen games not in the picture which would be at least the second strongest game in over half the entrants. Unless there is rallying 1998 should be our next contest champion.

Pre-contest 1993 looked to be the weakest entrant out of the 90s and to make matters worse it was given what is likely its worst opponent and to make things even worse Link’s Awakening isn’t even in the picture though to be fair it wouldn’t do it any good with Ocarina of Time. Overall 1993 doesn’t exactly offer much else. If this was on a different site Doom and to a certain extent Myst would be good games to have, but GameFAQs doesn’t particularly care much for PC games.

While 1993 isn’t the weakest year in the contest this match has the potential of being the largest blowout of the contest. As I look at the other strong years I’m beginning to think 1998 may break 60% against the entire field.

Analysis

2016 is a bit of a wildcard since we have no idea about the strength of the games. Final Fantasy XV alone probably makes the year stronger than 2009 or 2012, but I’m hesitant to rank it too much higher. Recency bias is a thing, but GameFAQs users have to actually play new games for it to matter.

1992 has Link to the Past and while there is a big drop-off after that it should be enough to win the match. It’s a shame Sonic 2 missed out in the picture, it would have added some diversity to what is three Nintendo games. Regardless I don’t see how 2016 would be able to keep up.

There has been some talk about Overwatch fans rallying for 2016, but I think that’s more hope than anything. It is always hard to mobilize a large group of people to vote and it’ll be even harder to convince them to vote for a year.

charmander6000’s Prediction: 1992 wins, 78.93% - 21.07%

Possibly, but 1994 got a Kefka sprite right underneath the year. I think voters definitely understood what game that was.

But yeah, after FFVI, Super Metroid, and Mega Man X all looked so great in 2015, I'm really surprised to see such a low percentage here. I'll try to remain optimistic and presume 2004 is just a beast, but even I have to concede that 1991 looks like the favorite at the moment.

Next round can change things though, as both the big 90s years are up against years from the 2000s that look pretty strong.

2002 versus 2011 - what ya got?
I think the 2000s years have a lot more depth, to the point where they aren't going to get blown out by the 90s years. I'm fairly pleased by this 1994 win.....it felt eerily like a potential upset.

Metroid Prime faced Skyrim directly last time, and looked like it could pull the upset, and 2002's secondary games wreck 2011s, so I'd feel damn confident in 2002 given a fair picture.

Do we really think that KHII's presence reverses this result? It's possible, but it's also possible that we're sleeping on 2011. There's really no evidence that KH and Vice City are stronger than Skyward Sword and Dark Souls.

2011 might be the only year since 2008 where the general play rate for its releases (captained by Skyrim) is high. If 1994 can match 1991's percentage next round, I'll probably stick with it in Round 3.
I figured 2011 would be one of the strongest most recent years, and I thought it had a shot at 2006. It's hard to say how much KH2 is really worth here though.

I think KH2 would make the match like 51-49 instead of 55-45 like right now. (Assuming we replaced Okami or Gears of War)

And I like I said earlier people are specifically pointing out KH2 but 2011 could have easily had Portal 2 instead of MK9 and would have done even better

I actually think MK9 is a perfect #4 for 2011. It's like nostalgia and modern gaming all in one. Plus, the pic looks great.
I don't think Portal 2 adds more to 2011's profile than KH2's does to 2006.

Mortal Kombat isn't that bad anyway. It's a big name franchise and that was the rebirth of the franchise.
It's not just KH2, but 2006's best shot being thrown in the fourth game slot. I think 2011 still wins, but the victory is close enough to call it tainted nonetheless.
