Wow, FFVII and FFVIII are both in the second slot in both pics, so voters will see them at the same time during the rotating animation. This could lead to some SFF maybe.

Super Smash Bros. doesn't even get listed under notable games either. 1999 got shafted hard. Not that it would've been strong anyway, but it could've been interesting in a lot of other places.
I'm still excited to see how my "year closest to 1998 wins, in the case of a tie the older year wins" theory goes. so far so good!

1997 - lol PaRappa, but it got its three games
1999 - Super Smash Bros. has sadly been forgotten
2007 - Best picture possible
2012 - Missing Mass Effect 3, though honestly this is a weak year.

'97 would be in much better shape if PaRappa were cut in favor of another Nintendo rep.

Roughly around SotN, maybe a tad stronger. It used to be significantly stronger but I don't think it's aged very well. Still a very worthy addition to any year.
probably stronger than SOTN? I dunno, some folks might fight me on that but it certainly had no problem in 04
xyzzy
and then MK64 rounds out a nice 4. that would be the ideal anyway. diversity might hurt 97 more than most since it has three strong-ish N64 games.

Vote-ins give the following for X-Stats:

2008 – 50.00%
2005 – 33.07%
2009 – 28.56%
1979 – 10.80%
1978 – 9.57%
1973 - 0.015%

Either 2008 is a beast or 2005 is kinda bad, probably the latter. 2005 gets 56.82% on 2009 based on current projections.
yeah I'd pick 2008 without thinking

I feel pretty good about 03 > 05. not sure about 15.
xyzzy
Jeez, 2001 looking ravenous. Snap judgment is that I'm very happy taking it to the finals.
is this really that good? 2014 is a dreadful year, probably one of the five worst years after 1990. like it's totally fine but I don't think it's dominating.

Vote-in X-Stat projections thus far based on the '80s ones:

2006 – 50.00%
1989 – 30.88%
1981 – 25.71%
1983 – 18.71%

Nothing surprising there.
LeonhartFour 5/4/2017 9:39:05 PM#171
Yeah, I think 2001 is doing what it needs to do here. 2014's not a great year. It's a wasteland aside from Smash 4, and it can't even take full advantage of that with Melee here.

2008 was the last year to get "year hype." Brawl/MGS4/Fallout 3 are forever linked - they're basically Melee/FFX/Halo Lite. I think it would have made for a nice debate against 2006 or 2011.
LeonhartFour 5/4/2017 9:40:16 PM#174
yeah the winner of this contest is basically going to be projected to get 100% on 1973 by the time this thing is over
just to get ahead of it -- we all agree that 1999 with a SFF'd FF8 is better than 2014 with a (potentially) SFF'd Smash 4, right? curious what people are expecting from 97/99.
xyzzy
I think Smash alone makes 2014 at least as good (and probably better) than any post-Skyrim year. Plus, I was worried that it would actually make 2001 look disappointing since Melee could have been dragged down by a newer, flashier Smash (it's happened before ugh).
LeonhartFour 5/4/2017 9:41:37 PM#177
I'd have taken 1999 to beat 2014, but FFVII SFFs FFVIII harder than Melee SFFs Smash 4, I'd wager.

Well, at least I feel better about picking 2003 > 2005.

0.015% for 1973 is probably not likely to happen in reality if you had a 1973/2008 match. The lowest percentage ever recorded in a GameFAQs poll was 0.06% and even that was a multi-way poll, so pulling off 0.06% in a 1v1 poll is much harder.

I guess it's impossible to judge this round. I think 2007 is similar to 01 in stature so I think 97 could look kinda bad going in to round 3. 2001 will definitely look nice in the lead-up, especially against 2008 where it's Melee/Brawl and MGS2/MGS4.

I'm not sure how much I trust 2007 when its strongest Nintendo game is Mario Galaxy and it's relying heavily on western games. It's got the three western franchises you'd want to have in your corner (other than Elder Scrolls, I guess) if you had to have them, but still.

Yeah, I can see 1997 stumbling a bit against 2007 because the latter year has a "traditional" Nintendo game that might mobilize fans. The main reason I soured on 1997 is because the more I thought about it, the less excited I got about its big-N support. It doesn't have any representatives from Nintendo's five strongest series.
Do people really think 2009 is better than 2014? 2014 might not be great, but 2009 has nothing at all.

I've gone from being utterly frightened of the match pictures pre-contest to being relatively unconcerned about them. I feel like, as the site has shrunk, we have our most educated audience yet. casuals don't really exist to us anymore.

As a veteran gamer myself, these bracket choices felt easy to fill out. There will only be couple of close battles besides the final one. The ones in Quarterfinal, 1997 vs 2000 and 2002 vs 2004 are going to be the toughest. I hope my picks, 97 and 04 are right. Other than that, it should be smooth sailing.

Dunno how to tell you this but 1991 is beating 2002
And 1994 is beating 2004

You might think having San Andreas and MGS3 is solid until you realize GTA gets dumpstered on this site and MGS series declined super hard over the past few contests.

I'd have comfortably taken 2014 >2009 before the contest and 2001's beating 2014 much worse than 2008's beating 2009. Some of this is probably SFF; SSB4 may not crumble to SSBM, but it can only support 2014 so much against it while 2001's other heavy hitters join in.

It's kinda like 1987 > 1985 if LoZ was also notably stronger than SMB1 and had three systems lauch the same year with it instead of facing the NES. This match has the best case yet for suggesting SFF.

I didn't think of MGS and GTA when picking those choices. For 2002, every other game listed there is better than GTA.

2004 was an AMAZING year in gaming. Better than both 2002 and 2003 combined. Games listed there don't do its justice at all. They missed Ninja Gaiden, Chronicles of Riddick, Far Cry, Metroid ZM, Sims 2, Halo 2, Katamari Damacy, etc. But I see where you are coming from... any year that has FF and any big Nintendo title has a good chance of winning.
