Mario 64 and Mario RPG are both stupidly strong games. RE1 and Crash Bandicoot are pretty resspected

If there's going to be any year that's going to benefit from a single mario game and having a console release factor into it strength with the current Gamefaqs voting base it's going to be 1996 with Mario 64 and the N64

5 people fell off the Top 50. The_Hyper, smoliske, Reg, LocalTreat and vampfredthefrog did not have both 1997 and 2007 winning.

Its top two are WAY better than 1990's. Seriously, Mario 64/Mario RPG versus Mario 3/FF1 is a slaughter. Also, 1996's secondary games are actually respected. Resident Evil and Crash/Kirby/DKC3 aren't strong on their own, but they add recognition and depth to their year. 1990 has nothing like that, at least not represented in today's match pic.

That said, I don't think 2000 will have any trouble rolling through next round as well, but 1996 should look better - and I think it'd crush 1990.

Ehhhhhhhhhhh, I'm not so sure. FF1 has looked really good when it's not up against other games in the series.

Yo 1990 stalled for the last minute before the freeze, I'm taking that as a moral victory and going to sleep.

yeah, I'm with you on Mario 64 and Mario RPG being better than Mario 3 and FF1 -- though I think 'slaughter' is way too strong -- but I'm still on the side of 2000 here.

if people were smart they'd think back to the n64, the console itself and not the games, as being a real failure for its controller and lack of cd technology but whatevs

Guessing 2000 and 1996 fall off after the board vote. We're getting some insane board votes this contest since the early voters are probably more likely to be aware of the notable games from both years, in addition to being more likely to have their vote planned out in advance.

I overrate Mario 3's strength and I can't help it. That game and Zelda 1 were my entire childhood until I discovered Squaresoft games.

I'd love to see Mario 3 get a straight match. I don't think it's really fallen off that hard but we keep comparing it to Mario World or putting it in weird situations like this poll.

UltimaterializerX what's your opinion on 1995 now? 1990 getting killed like this doesn't really make me feel so good about having 1995 in the finals of my bracket.

We really didn't get to see much of either 3 or World last time, really.

And 2000 falls like a rock. Curse you, bracket voters!

I have 95 in the finals too and I don't think this poll means much.

So looks like we have another day that prooves that diversity and depth beat intrinsic strength. Things don't bode well for 1991, but I maintain hope that it will be the exception to this rule.

Well at least I feel stupid for picking 95 in the finals.

Yeah, 1990 will make this look semi-respectable by the time this thing is over. Mario 3 being such a huge game does help alleviate the pain a little bit.

Man, I'm actually disappointed in 2000 here. It's already down to 66% and falling - if it falls all day and ends around 60%, I'll be worried for next round. I thought it'd throttle 1990.
