yeah this is bad two ways

one, one game absolutely can't carry a year against depth

two, 1995 has one game

I have a feeling there's going to be a big percentage shift on the next update.

I just don't know which way it's going.

Early vote totals are slightly better than yesterday's matches, which had technical difficulties with the match pictures not showing up for most people outside of the US/Canada/Mexico. Vote totals are still lower than the first day of matches.

I think they will probably be recycled because today's match pictures all have "r1" in the URL just like the URLs for the wildcard pictures. I think 2005 and 2006 will both have the same match picture for their round 1 match when they come up later in this round.

I think we'll end up judging 87 vs. 95 by how some of the other years go, not necessarily these two. both did well here.

Bolto4 5/3/2017 9:13:24 PM#418
Well my confidence in 95 has been briefly restored for now.

But seeing 87 do this well, would of had gave 85 much more a chance of outright winning the match before seeing 87 go over 70, either way it might end up doing a lot more respectably vs 95 then what we were figuring.

eh, in fairness that's always meant it's over unless it was some ridiculous early vote or Sephiroth

It's weird, because there's no change to the rotating picture code from this JavaScript file:

https://www.gamefaqs.com/js/byg_2.js

The only new addition was the code for displaying the notable games and system releases when you click on the ? Mark icon which appears on the top left corner of the match pictures.

well, I guess we're on cruise control until 90/00. I guess 2000 is the clear fave there - I want to see how old and new years mix before saying too much though. Mario 3 is on another level from Mario 1.

'95 is proving to be a monster. '87 is also proving to be a monster. Dang, I'm looking forward to the match in round 2! (I don't feel so stupid anymore for switching to '87 at the last minute for round 2)

1985 really was a weak year.

Three days in and depth is king. I thought I was going high with 1987 at 57%, but I was underselling it about as much as everyone else.

THAT SAID

I'd still take Yoshi's Island, Earthbound, and DKC2 over the original Castlevania, Mega Man, and Metroid. 1995 has enough depth to take out any NES year, imo, but it actually needs to showcase it in the match picture.

And SBAllen ain't listenin'
HaRRicH 5/3/2017 9:17:13 PM#431
Damn, 1985 choked. There goes one of my two picks against the cookie.

1995's fair game now with a performance like this, but I'm still betting on 1995 next round.

Well my gut was that the depth of the year would matter a lot more than a single big game, which today seems to be proving. Chrono Trigger is one big ass game though, and it's backup isn't that bad. '85 is definitely looking kind of scary though.
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
1986 is so bad that I'm not sure if 1995 is proving anything here.

then again, who knows if 1985 is worth much either

LeonhartFour 5/3/2017 9:17:28 PM#434
I'd have gone high with 1987 had I picked it because it had every reason to win and win easily. You were banking on one specific scenario for 1985 to win, and it didn't come through.

1987 is today's star. Everyone expected 1995 to win with 90% because it's facing total fodder. 85/87 was actually debated and may result in a tripling. The big question is whether 95 can even get past 87, because so far it looks like 2001 will simply roast it.
well let's do this. top 5 games of 87/95?

1. Chrono Trigger
2. Zelda
3. ...Earthbound?
4. Yoshi's Island?
5. Metroid?

Yeah, 1995's second tier is better than 1987's second tier, but if SBAllen decides to keep rolling with obscure games for the sake of variety instead of giving 1995 the best it has to offer, it could be in trouble.

Yeah, I'm really hoping we see a different set of pics next round, though the ? mark at the top mentioning Yoshi's Island and Earthbound before these scrub games is a big help.

Something I'm also wondering about is how much of 1985 vs 1987 is SFF? It's impossible to really say but when you have one Nintendo entry against an significantly stronger one, SFF might be on the table to make the win even bigger.

I'd take DKC2 over Metroid 1.
I picked 2001 pretty easily over the 95/87 winner. Think that one has always been a fairly easy choice. Watch me be proven wrong! Like Chrono Trigger is the #1 game on this site but voters are smarter than we give them credit for. Depth matters.

1995 keeps creeping up toward 90%.

I think it looks fine now where it is.
I don't know if I'm more surprised by how much 87 is crushing 85 or that 86 has over 10%

2001's better diversity in its top hitters is going to serve it very well in this contest.

SSBM, FFX, and Halo comprise each of the main consoles, and GTA3 or MGS2 would round it out nicely.

I didn't even notice the question marks... we need something much better than that to list the major games of that year.

"Well, you drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think."
Another premature reaction: this bodes really well for 2001, 2000, 1994, and obviously 1998.

This bodes poorly for both 1996 AND 1997 (I don't trust 97's Nintendo games). I'd lol so hard if 2000 got past both of those.
LeonhartFour 5/3/2017 9:25:21 PM#448

put 2000 in its place

come on SBAllen give 2000 the 1995 treatment and only give it one game worth a crap in the match pic
