Is someone running a battle challenge or something like that (the thing when you bet on the winner of each match and the more pick in a row the more point you gain until you bank those points)

SBAllen's tiebreaker got me thinking, I wonder what the combined votes of each contest are and which one had the most. It might be tedious to input all the data, but you could probably figure it all out on a spreadsheet or something pretty easily!

creativename's site has a listing of the vote totals from all contest matches up to 2006 in a table so it wasn't that hard to get these numbers. Getting the numbers of later contests will be a bit more work.

2k6 is always the answer for every vote total question, unless you're looking for biggest matches - then it's the L stuff from 2k7.

1990 has that much support in R1? I can understand that one, but I'm surprised so many have it despite many people saying the NES is too old.

So many with 1987 over 1995, despite none of the 1987 games being that strong? Maybe my initial gut pick for 1987 wasn't so bad after all. Still, 1995 has more than just CT.... games like Yoshi's Island and Earthbound might be just as meaningful as Mega Man or Castlevania. But I could be wrong there.

I don't get the overwhelming support 1996 has over 2000, either. 2000 has so much more depth, and Mario 64 is worth like 55% on 2000's strongest game. I think I'd rank the three of them 2000 > 1990 > 1996. 1990 outperforming 1996 will be one of my BOLD predictions this contest.

Being "too old" is already factored into how strong a game is. We know Mario 3 is super strong even with its age factored in.

Yeah, Mario 3 is the crown jewel of the NES. It still has a ridiculously high play rate because it's available on so many platforms, too.

it's also historical. I think 2000 makes more sense as a pick but if you want to tie your name to a classic, you could do worse.

I don't get how 2000 is the favorite there, but what do I know. I'm also hilariously biased toward Mario 3 so I'm not the guy to ask.

MM, FFIX, and Pokemon are B8 darlings, so it's not hard to see why 2000 would get a lot of benefit of the doubt from people.

It comes down to "people will vote a year based on one game" vs. "people will vote a year based on several games". 2000 is strong with the latter consideration but would be pretty weak in the former.

And of course we'll have no clue how voting will go on that until it actually starts.

I remember this from 2015. It was my favorite side contest.

I'm curious how this old games/new games thing will work out with whole years instead of individual games. I'm kind of afraid that while old standout games do really well, the non-standout ones tend to be weak, and maybe it won't translate into great strength on a year by year basis. Oh well, 1995 winner because Link Always Wins (even though Link/LoZ hasn't won a contest in many years).

Outside of Super Mario Bros. 3 1990 isn't much of a threat and even then Majora's Mask did break 47.5% on Link to the Past. Even if you attribute a boost due to new voters I still believe the game would easily break 40% and maybe 45% against Super Mario Bros. 3. After that 1990 doesn't have much; Final Fantasy will get crushed by Final Fantasy IX and Mega Man 3 may not even be in the poll (it wasn't on SBAllen's notable games list) and after that there isn't much for the year while on the notable games list 2000 has Diablo II, Perfect Dark and Pokemon Gold/Silver while games like Chrono Cross could potentially be featured in the match.

Are we that sure? Sometimes we make it seem like Nintendo and Square are niche offerings that are extremely popular only on this site, while every other site heavily favors Western games... and I just don't buy it, at least not to that extent. Nintendo and Square are popular in lots of places (Zelda was a force during those few contests that GameSpot ran), and I'm sure Melee would out-poll Halo on several different sites. Sure, it wouldn't be the 70/30 drumming it would be on this site, but it's not like Halo would reverse that result everywhere else.

Yeah people seem to like to believe that "any other site" means one that favours western games and shooters. Obviously such sites exist but it's by no means all.

2001 has a ridiculous number of strong games that could be the most popular in any given community. Halo, FFX, SSBM, GTA3, MGS2... and heck, the best-selling game of the bunch is Gran Turismo 3. It's presumptuous to say any of these games is the obvious choice on "any other site".

Since this contest sucks for me I just went with what the majority of the Gurus went. But I want to ask 2 things.
1)Why 2001 has so much support and not 1997?
2)What is a good number for tiebraker?

1. 2001 is deep and people don't trust FFVII anymore
2. Anywhere around a million is probably good

Anywhere from 700000 to 1050000 based on the math I did. This range assumes average vote totals between 20000 and 30000 votes per match.

I'm thinking match pictures for the Wildcard Round will be the same size as the 1970s Vote-In pictures. Assuming all 4 matches running at the same time, there will be 8 different options, which was the same number of options we had in the 1970s Vote-In.

That may actually make 1983 vs. 1989 interesting. Mario Bros. vs. Tetris/Mega Man 2 is something I'd have to think about.

In the 1980s Vote-In poll, 1981 put up 63.62% on 1983 and I'd expect 1989 to be stronger than 1981. That probably puts 1989 at 70-75% on 1983.

I wish 1983 had gotten put up against 1986 instead of 1989. 1986 is the one year that didn't have to participate in the Vote-In polls which should be weaker than 1981.

I wish SBAllen would put 1973 in this contest and make it face 1998. =p

I disagree. I think there's a good bit of variance in the picks compared to, say, the series contest. I think the 96/97/01 trio, as well as 91/94, offer a bunch of permutations. I also think that the consensus is less likely than most but that's another conversation.

Eh, there are a lot of matches that have a pretty overwhelming consensus. I think you'll see plenty of brackets that only have a match or two different from one another.

I think that's true due to the size of the bracket, but I don't think it's an obvious one like the villain contest or the series contest. that's the difference. we'll see when the guru gets posted.

Based on the BOP, almost no one is siding with 1985. If you go with 1987 and get it wrong, it is unlikely that there will be someone who chose 1985 and matches your bracket exactly for every other match.
