I don't think you can take this poll that seriously unless you think Mario World belongs where it is.

I would hope not...

More people have played SMW than SMRPG at this point, so maybe people just want a legal way to play SMRPG.

I think it speaks well of Mario RPG's popularity that this many people want a way to play it again, but I don't think you can make any sort of comparisons between games here.

yeah, Mario RPG is legit. I give it a lot of crap but it's obviously not a weak game. I just wish it would stop being gifted polls like these.

Part of me just wants to pick 2016 because some game that I don't know about came out and will get a decent little rally and that's all it would take to win it all.

Until Melee fans counter-rally and give 2001 the win instead!

I took 2001 to the final for two reasons.

- Melee fans are extremely dedicated about not just their game but how LONG they've been dedicated to it. They strike me as among the very, very few people that would care about their year. Their game and the console's.
- I feel like a lot of brackets for this are going to be kind of samey and picking 01 instead of 97 will help me out a bit in that regard.

Though I can't pick it over 98. If Ocarina was 98's only big game, honestly? Maybe I would've. But Pokemon and MGS really push 98 over the edge.

I feel like 2016 would get random-rallied before 2001. It strikes me as odd to think a number would get rallied heavily anyway, and this contest will probably be closer to the rivalry rumble than the Draven contest.

You also have to realize 1998 has the biggest Zelda, the biggest Pokemon, the biggest Metal Gear Solid, and probably the biggest of other things. For all we know, 1998 is what gets rallied this year. Ocarina of Time and Pokemon Red/Blue is nuts.

I really wish 2017 was eligible though. I would have picked it to win.

If you're expecting Melee fans to rally, our minuscule vote totals aren't going to save 1998. Go big or go home.

Is anyone NOT picking 1998 to win it all?
Not_Wylvane
I'm picking 1998 because it's hard to predict if there will be a rally or what year will get it, so I don't feel good trying to predict the bracket based on that.

I nearly won GameSpot's Villains Contest one year doing just that because 4chan is incredibly predictable, but I can't do it here.
Holy moly, just found out about the contest. I mean, it is weird and will be hard to predict, but the idea is kinda lame.

Initial thoughts:

90s > late 80s > 00s > 10s > everything before 1987 as a general rule of thumb

1990 vs 2000 is probably my favourite matchup of the first round, could definitely see that one going either way

Melee is like Street Fighter II or GoldenEye 007. It's game that people will hold on to forever even if there are better options.

It's an e-sport. And the thing about sports as a whole is that they tend to last a lot more than regular games. Sports need constant rules and a stable meta, so when people find one that is good, they stick to it, instead of changing every time someone launches a new one.

Same with SF2.

I'm not sure if anyone still plays 007 rerularly, though.

Can confirm, nobody actually plays Goldeneye.

Because I play Goldeneye and I'm always desperate for other people to play and almost never find anyone.

Melee is not like Street Fighter II.

Street Fighter II doesn't still get major tournament presence at EVO and stuff. The top Street Fighter players DO move on to the next entry because there is incentive to do it and the games are not THAT different.

Melee is still super relevant in a big way for the tournament scene, and is mostly a distinct entity from Smash 4, which is also huge.

you think people still play Melee on this site? we have fond memories of it but the vast vast majority aren't still playing it today. same goes for most of the big games on this site - it's not like 80% of the site has played Chrono Trigger in the last year or two.
xyzzy
Melee is relevant as a competitive fighting game, but the number of people who are still playing it casually on a regular basis is probably pretty low. Now the number of people who still enjoy watching it at EVO is probably pretty high, and that helps.
that I agree with. super metroid has grown due to its streaming success over the last few years.

I think tournaments and the whole competitive scene make Melee a big game, but I'm not convinced they make 2001 a big year. All of the notable tournaments/matches happened in a different year.

I still haven't figured out how people will vote in this thing. Realistically 1997 should be one of the strongest years on this site due to it starting the entire RPG revolution and causing companies to start porting their games to the west (including Pokemon!), but everyone seems to view it as just one game when its impact is so much more.

Are we that sure? Sometimes we make it seem like Nintendo and Square are niche offerings that are extremely popular only on this site, while every other site heavily favors Western games... and I just don't buy it, at least not to that extent. Nintendo and Square are popular in lots of places (Zelda was a force during those few contests that GameSpot ran), and I'm sure Melee would out-poll Halo on several different sites. Sure, it wouldn't be the 70/30 drumming it would be on this site, but it's not like Halo would reverse that result everywhere else.
