Ah that makes sense.

Anyway, just finished filling up the bracket and its Chrono, Mario in the later rounds with once again, Cloud and Link in the finals...or OoT vs FF7 however you wanna call it.

So why are people making it sound like 2003>2013 is such a easy match?
The only thing going for 2003 is Wind Waker
2013 has the Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, the most popular Fire Emblem game and PS4 (assuming console launch matters)

Yeah, I feel a few midcarder years that had potential for weird upsets get fed to strong games in round 1. 1999, 2004, and 1993.

There's a joke that GameFAQs doesn't play games after 2006, and there's definitely at least some kernel of truth to it. After 2006, the newer a year is, the less GameFAQs is gonna care about it. 2017 might be in a position to change that, but 2012-2016 are not, and I don't trust them against any year from 1990-2008.

Another thing GameFAQs doesn't like (and most gamers unfortunately) is handheld games, so I wouldn't count on the 3DS bailing 2013 out either.

Looks pretty close to The Last of Us in strength.

I don't think the match is a total given either but Wind Waker is on a completely different level from everything else in either year and 2003's second strongest game (which Wind Waker almost doubled) is probably about as strong as anything in 2013. Depth absolutely has to matter for 2013 to win.

I only see a bunch of games this site doesn't care about.

GTAV is a GTA without nostalgia.

Bioshock Infinite is a game the internet seems to hate.

Fire Emblem Awakening is limited to 3DS players.

The Last of Us might be strong, I give you that, but it still gets smoked by old games imo.

Pokemon X/Y has to face the division of the Pokemon fanbase, and the fact most pokemon players from this site hate every game except for one (that game varying from player to player).

A lot of people seem very sure that 1997 is going to beat 1996, but FFVII characters looked really bad in 2013 and Super Mario 64 has looked good in the last couple of games contests. There's an upset in the making, here.

Yeah, I don't think 1997 has good odds of making the final. Rounds 3 and 4 are gonna be rough for it, whatever it goes up against.

The first round is way too easy. What a waste. Even with some harder matches later on, there should be a few perfect brackets in this, I think.

What are the chances 2001 will get rallied due to SSBM?

1997 is hard to guage, yeah. It's stronger than any individual games in 2000 or 2001, but its companions are a bit weaker... plus, no new gaming system.

Speaking of systems , is 1991 is going to be a powerhouse here, or will it be a bust? SNES may be the most revered system on GameFAQs. Even though Sonic isn't strong by itself, Mario + Sonic + Final Fantasy might be a pretty strong combination. The problem is that Super Mario World is the only strong game that year, though. I think it's safe against 2002.... but I don't know if it will lose to 1994 or if it will win that quarter of the bracket.

I meant to say that FFVII is stronger than any individual games in 2000 or 2001.

Does somebody have a link to that wiki that provides a comprehensive list of games for each year? I will probably make changes on bracket once I see that.... but dang, if MMX is in 1994, too, that makes me feel better about '94 against '91.

Somebody asked if 1985 can beat 1987? I mean... Legend of Zelda, Mega Man, Metroid, Castlevania... holy crap. If 1985 wins, it means that a whole bunch of respected games can't stack up to the nostalgia of one game or something, OR that system releases are very, very important to a competitor's strength.

If 1985 beats 1987, then 1991 probably beats 1994. I'm still banking on '87/'94, for sure.

During the 2009 contest The Legend of Zelda+Metroid had more votes than Super Mario Bros. alone and I would like to think Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Mega Man and Castlevania will counter anything else 1985 would have.

Of course that all depends on whether the average voter will vote for which year had their favourite game. The console factor, in particular the NES could influence voters towards which year had more impact.

honestly GBA 2003 was just as good as 3DS 2013, so the handheld factor wouldn't help anyway

Mario 64 would probably stand a good shot at FFVII one-on-one, but I think '97 has deeper depth than '96.

Remember that Wind Waker got nearly 47% on that FFVI you are lauding so highly so you're giving RE4 a pretty good shot at FFVI (and by extension World and Super Metroid)...!

the game that couldn't get 45% on Super Mario RPG

I like the years where a big console drops, when the strength of the games seems close.

91 > 94 based on SNES with FF6 = SMW
05 > 03 based on X360 with RE4 = WW

I have 01>95 atm, but need to think on that a bit, but I think whoever comes out of that is beating 97 on the strength of gamecube or PS. I'm actually even considering 96>97 based on N64.

I find it interesting that Super Mario World is performing fairly bad in this poll, but I think most people take it for granted that Super Mario World is the one game that would absolutely be included in an SNES Classic, allowing them to vote for a different game instead.

Thanks for running the BOP, charmander... always a super useful resource until the Guru Challenge.

Anybody else feel like the years aren't going to merely be the sum of the strength of the games? And if that's the case, then what IS going to happen? What will be the mindset of voters, relative to character and game contests? Will "importance" be more strongly considered? Nostalgia? The influence of gaming systems, as I've previously talked about?

'85 - '91 are tough to peg.... they are filled with classics that people might consider VERY important to the history of gaming. Judging by the BOP, it seems quite a few are banking on that to be the case. 1991 is the favorite over 1994? Interesting... that was my initial gut pick, as well.

And.... what years are the most likely to be rallied? 2001 due to Melee, along with 2017?

Honestly, I've been picking based off of clicking the year description, and just looking at the two pictured games first, and then looking at the game list, and seeing what my impression is based off the profiles.

I don't know how GameFAQs is exactly going to vote, but I'm guessing the information they'll be given isn't going to deviate much from the profiles.

91 vs. 94 is a perfect example of this. How can you bet against the one-two punch of Mario World and Sonic 1?
