no it isn't

also no one is analyzing the early 2000s years by how good the GameCube games were

they're trying to decide if its launch year was its best year because I said the system's launch year is never the best one

I thought we were analyzing the Gamecube years which happened to be in the early 2000s.

Except there was a console that was a million more time more popular than the Gamecube.
Everywhere except here.

Not that I am not guilty of this myself. I have most Nintendo consoles but never owned a single non-intendo one in my life.

Right. We weren't comparing the Gamecube to the Playstation 2.

spoilers PS2 would crush the GameCube if we--heaven forbid--ever had a console contest
I don't see why a console contest would be horrible, we have enough of them for a 32 single elimination bracket.
Congrats to DpObliVion for winning the guru.
The 2 Vote-In polls ended up having almost identical vote totals. The 1980s poll received just 26 votes more than the 1970s poll.

While the 1970s poll had very uninteresting trends, the 1980s poll was slightly more interesting.

because only maybe a quarter of them are worth caring about
please, all 4 incarnations of the PS, at least 5 nintendo consoles, the 3 xboxs and 3 segas

it would be interesting.
Started from the bottom now we here

I don't think it would be worse than a year contest!

But it would probably be a little more predictable.

and you haven't even filled half the bracket yet

The Sega consoles would all do pretty badly (meaning they might win one match because their competition will be the Wonderswan or the Virtual Boy). The 360 might do okay for XBox, but that's about it.

Plus, you already know the hierarchy for all the Nintendo systems. We already know what the most popular systems are here. The only real wild card would be the PC.

All contests have fodder and huge favourites, should we not have character/game contests because Link/Ocarina of Time breaks 60% against all, but a handful or entrants?

I just went through the generations off the top of my head and already have 28 entrants and that's without dipping into the Sega Master System, Game Gear, N-Gage, Wonderswan, Virtual Boy tiers. It'll be easy to get enough systems.

Congrats to DpObliVion for winning the guru.
My issue with a console contest is the same as the year contest: It would be f***ing boring. Character and game contests usually have some great upsets that throw regulars for a loop, but more importantly people who follow have actual investment in games and characters, either from being a fan of theirs or just knowing their past history from previous contests.

I'm not as invested in the year 1985 or the NES as I would be Mario or Super Mario Bros. This is alright as a filler contest but I'd rather have more contests potentially ruined by rallies than stuff I have no investment in.

"There are no upsets" is largely only something you can say when looking back on a contest. It's not really a big unforeseen upset if you can see it coming a mile away. Like Undertale vs Mass Effect 3 was a boring match with no potential for an upset until it suddenly did.

Console wars are a thing even today. I disagree with the suggestion that people are not invested in how popular a console is. Even month I see PS4 fans bust out NPD numbers to show how their console won a month yet again.
My bracket got smashed by DpObliVion.

Fair point, but I have serious doubts about the 15-year-olds of today being as rabid as we were during the PS2/GC/Xbox era. Remember the fanboy wars during the DS/PSP launches? We were crazy.

I think PS3 vs Xbox360 was worse.

That's when both the hardcore consoles were succesful.

The Wii beating them both in sales didn't help either.

Nowadays most of those kids just play PS4.
(edited 4/14/2017 2:28:56 PM)report
Say what you want about Sony, but I think they never had a console fail before. PS3 was the worst one and it still sold pretty well. That's some huge brand loyalty.

It's only at portables they are complete crap.

it's not the same thing

You can get me to care about Phoenix Wright vs. Marth

you can't get me to care in the slightest about Game Boy vs. Genesis

like the only match we need to see is PS2 vs. SNES

get everything else out of here

N64 vs PS2 match pic would be like the anti-Melee vs FFX: A huge OoT Link versus a wave of 30 Sony characters.

N64 wins.

I'd put N64 over both in my bracket.

And vote for it too.

I'm surprised the prizes are so huge for a mini-contest such as this one. In the past, the mini-contests have smaller prizes than the standard sized contests.

hey remember when the N64 almost lost to the friggin' GameCube in a favorite Nintendo system poll

https://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/6375-which-nintendo-console-is-your-all-time-favorite

that poll is also why we only need to see SNES vs. PS2 because we already know who the king of the Nintendo mountain is, which would take up half the bracket and would be full of SFF

but yeah pick a '90s year whenever possible

except for maybe 2001
Except for pre-NES stuff, that is.

I did notice the very saddening 1997 vs. 1999 matchup

STOP FEEDING SQUALL TO CLOUD DARN IT
Enter Your Tiebreaker:
How many total votes will be cast through all 35 battles?

The tiebreaker question is the same as the one we had for the previous contest (except with 128 matches instead). To accurately answer this tiebreaker, we'll have to estimate the average vote totals for this contest. I wouldn't use the terrible vote totals of the 2 Vote-In polls to say anything about what kind of vote totals we'll get for this contest. Most of the site was caught off-guard by the Vote-In polls and had no idea there was an upcoming contest.

25000 votes per match seems like a reasonable average for this contest. Here's a few projections for the tiebreaker question:

Average | Total Votes (all 35 matches)
20000 | 700000
25000 | 875000
30000 | 1050000

Not sure if it's already been pointed out, but the fine print states the final match is scheduled for May 22. Three week contest?

@Ngamer64, we better get ready!

(hopefully my dumb ass will be there this time)

1985 vs 1987 too.

Mario 1 vs Zelda 1
transience 4/14/2017 2:50:46 PM#140
yeah 85 vs 87 felt like a rehash

and it's funny because 1987 is very clearly objectively a mile better than 1985 - but Mario 1
xyzzy
I mean Zelda wins but it's a cool match
Actually now that I'm looking close 1987 seems better.

But 1985 has the NES> It's basically the Dawn of Modern Gaming.

I had 85 at first but waffled just because 87 has so much more firepower. I know SMB1 has a win over LoZ years ago, but if anything, it feels like Zelda has gotten even stronger relative to Mario since then.

Difference is small.

1987 has like 5 strong games versus 1985's 1.

I dunno how voters will think but I'd vote 1987. And I like SMB more myself.

Hmm, based on this, it looks like we'll have 2 matches per day in the Wildcard round, round 1, and round 2. 1 match per day starts in the Quarterfinal round. This results in a 21 day contest, which I feel is too short of a contest.

If you believe console releases matter, 1985 has the NES.

Ugh I forgot about this. Big waste to put the two strongest 80s years together in the first round.

Also interesting that 2006, of all years, is in a wildcard. I thought that year had top 10 potential.
transience 4/14/2017 2:55:44 PM#150
I don't think those wildcards are ranked or anything.
