All it takes is for someone to go into 4-chan and convinced them gameFAQs is filled with SJWs.

If you really believe that's the case then you may as well bank on it and pick 2016 to win. 4chan hasn't won a GameFAQs contest yet (2015 was largely Tumblr, 2013 was Reddit, 2007 was the entire internet and GameFAQs itself), but who knows, maybe things have really changed since the last contest. Trump is President.
Here is the thing though: banking on any rally happen is risky. Any rally has more chance of not happening than otherwise.
Right, but that's why I really question the notion that anyone on 4chan can just bring up SJWs in order to make a 2016 rally catch fire. It seems so unlikely.
I don't think 4chan is going to rally for a specific year to make a political statement on a gaming-oriented website.

But this is the internet so I can't rule out that possibility either.

I'd sooner expect a 2016 rallying for Overwatch than a political reason.

But hey, if they want to back the year that also had Uncharted 4, Fire Emblem Fates, Pokemon Sun/Moon, Kirby: Planet Robobot, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice, The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy XV, and Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, go right ahead.

Frozen. In. Time!

Good catch.
How about we make a Board 8 wiki page where we list all the games that have ever made the contest, and team up to edit the page and identify the years they were released?

We could also list significant games that haven't made a contest (which would be few), and the most noteworthy games of recent years.

I'd put the 1986 NA release of Gradius on the NES as notable. It's pretty well recognized to this day and the series led a long life. Hell I just bought Gradius II on the PSN the other day the games have been ported 1000x times.

I've added (I THINK) basically every game's that's been in either a contest match or the Fall 2005: 10-Year Anniversary Contest top 100 and wasn't already there. Didn't look at all of the big mainstream modern games because I generally assumed they'd already be there so I might have missed some. I just now noticed the Fallout franchise was all missing so I put those in.

Didn't add Mother 3 because it has no U.S. release date.
Didn't add Madden NFL 2004 because nobody cares.

Do we know how the seeding will work? Since we know the years and don't need nominations, will Allen seed it himself? Or will there be noms just for seeding.

Any successful rally would need to be for whatever year would draw the angriest reaction from the board. If it's not funny or entertaining, noone is going to care enough to rally for something. So that's the question - will the board care enough about this particular contest to draw a reaction if something unexpected happens? Or will the board be so apathetic that noone feels like keeping up the effort of rallying.

Honestly, I think the year with the best chance of a rally is whatever is up against 1998 in the first round because 1998 will be so heavily favored that it has the best chance of causing irritation here if 1998 somehow loses.
Yay - DpObliVion is the guru champion of awesomeness.
The board might get miffed just because the rally would almost certainly come from a recent year (2015/Undertale, 2016/Overwatch), and we basically haven't played games that new.
UltimaterializerX 3/23/2017 7:22:01 PM#423
The most likely year to get rallied would be 2016, because of Overwatch and Breath of the Wild. Without a rally it is literally impossible for 1998 to lose. Ocarina of Time and Pokemon Red/Blue and Metal Solid? Starcraft, Final Fantasy Tactics, Half-Life? Good f***ing god.

So I'm on Dabu's podcast as we speak, and it just dawned on everyone that this contest is best year in gaming, not best games from each year. Systems themselves are going to pull huge weight in a contest like this.

The SNES came out in 1991.

PS1 launched in '95
N64 launched in '96

I had always thought Crash Bandicoot was a PS1 launch title, but I only just found out that it came out a year later.

I'm secretly hoping that Allen will put Ridge Racer (which is a PS1 launch title) for '95 just to see if people will vote for it on the sole basis of RIIIIIDGE RACERRRR.

I wonder what effect the PS3 will have on 2006. While the console eventually recovered, 2006 was the height of "599 US DOLLARS". The Wii also has the reverse effect going on. It was super popular in 2006 but is not highly regarded today.

Over in charmander's analysis topic, I posted about the effect of a new console release has on the depth of the games released during those years. This is what I posted:

LusterSoldier posted...
The lack of depth in 2006 is most likely caused by the release of 2 new consoles during that year. New consoles usually don't have a major game release in the same year they are released. Nintendo has had 6 different consoles with major releases in the same year they launched the console. The list consists of the following:

NES - Super Mario Bros.
SNES - Super Mario World and Final Fantasy IV
Nintendo 64 - Super Mario 64
GameCube - Super Smash Bros. Melee
Wii - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Switch - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Besides the original Xbox with Halo: Combat Evolved, I can't think of any other non-Nintendo consoles which had a major game release for the console in the same year the console was launched.

For this reason alone, the years which feature new console releases usually lack depth as developers try shift their resources away from the current systems in order to make new games for the newest consoles. 2013 is another year that suffers from the same issue as 2006, due to the release of the PS4 and Xbox One. The PS3 only had one major game in 2013 and Xbox 360 didn't have anything notable that year. 2011 was the last year that had anything notable for Xbox 360, as it seemed like Microsoft decided to abandon the Xbox 360 to work on game development for Xbox One.

While we don't have any idea how well Super Mario Odyssey will be received at this point, you could even list that game under the list of major releases the Switch will have during the same year it was launched. 2017 is looking like it will be one of the stronger years of this decade just on the strength of 2 Nintendo games alone and we still have about 9 months left in this year. While it seems like Mass Effect: Andromeda is going to be one of the biggest duds of 2017, there's still a ton of potential games coming out in 2017 without any confirmed release dates as of right now.

I'm not sure if consoles will have a huge impact, it's the games that made the consoles good/bad. Maybe if the match picture had the consoles in them.

I've been looking at the notable games page and it looks fairly complete. Should we add the Mega Man/Mega Man X games? I may spend some time looking for memorable games to fill the 80s, especially 1986.
Congrats to DpObliVion for winning the guru.

I think console releases will have an impact. If a voter has a positive impression of a console, I feel like that will carry over into being a positive impression of the year the console came out in. Like I think the SNES will clearly boost 1991. The PS3 situation is a bit weird. The PS3 may boost 2006 even though people hated the PS3 in 2006.

I can see the strength of the launch itself might be a factor here as well.

Because if I am doing a match pic for say...1999, there's no way I'm not including some sort of reference to 9-9-99. Then there's 96, where just having Super Mario 64 prominent would be more than enough to get people to remember the N64.

I think you are giving the average voter way too much credit. Most people don't know much video game history off the top of their heads. They would have to google the year to remember what happened or came out that year. I have been a huge video game enthusiast for nearly my entire life, but I couldn't tell you what year any console released (except the NES and the N64).

Most people will look at the picture/list and say, "Oh, that picture/list is better than the other one. I pick that year." They aren't going to put forth the effort to research what happened or released in those particular years.
Yay - DpObliVion is the guru champion of awesomeness.
I can promise you consoles will be in match pictures.
Get the X out.
Vinateri was using his god powers on the Pats and then was like "Wait I'm a Colt now lol" and now you have it.
Not sure about the effect it'll have. Could be significant or could be nothing.

We get excited for consoles because of the games, and the games will already be on full display. I can see a console launch boosting 1985 the most because the NES launch is like THE historic moment in gaming.

Can someone ask Allen if match pics will have consoles? That would make quite a difference.

Also I am presuming each year will have a summary that contains noteworthy games. Will the summary list consoles? I would expect it to, but you never know.
Don't forget: the year should be based on the release dates of a games or systems in North America, unless there was never a North American release.

Looks like consoles will be included (assuming the writer includes them)
