BotW has a great chance at being a top 10 game at GameFAQs, it will at the very least be a top 20. Skyrim was arguably a top 20 game last contest and I have no issue taking BotW over it.

Assuming the Switch doesn't completely flop.

Majora's Mask had an underdog run.

Not really, it went from arguably barely losing to FFX/SSBB to barely winning

people literally started rallying for Majora because they didn't think FFX would beat Brawl

they were also 100% wrong and that's why we can't have nice things

Today's poll looks very good for the Switch. We had this same poll back in 2014 (but with the Wii U instead of Switch). In the 2014 poll, the following percentage of the site expected to own the following systems by the end of the year:

PlayStation 4 - 39.89%
Wii U - 42.25%
Xbox One - 13.90%

When we had the "Got Console?" polls at the end of 2014, we got to compare their actual ownership. PS4 only ended up with 34.99% at the end of 2014, so people overestimated their chances of having a PS4 by the end of 2014. The Wii U ended up with 44.51% ownership and the Xbox One with 16.22% ownership, so people were underestimating their chances of having either a Wii U or Xbox One by the end of 2014.

In today's poll, 47.78% of the site expects to own a Switch by the end of this year, which is actually quite impressive. It's still less impressive than the Wii, which had 56.90% ownership by the end of 2007. The 47.78% of the site that expects to have a Switch by the end of the year is probably an underestimate, as there are some people that aren't fully sold on the Switch due to the disappointment that was the Wii U.

I just looked at the PotD before voting on it and thought "the last option looks like a 60%".

So could anything contest Breath of the Wild for GotY this year?

what's expected of Persona 5? there is a lot of hype for it and it received excellent reviews in Japan. I think it will do really well. There is also Mass Effect Andromeda, although we don't know how well it's going to be received by fans especially after the ME3 disappointment.

I guess I wouldn't completely rule out Breath of the Wild being a lock for GotY, especially when it's an early 2017 release and will be 10 months old by the time the 2017 GotY polls happen. Games released near the end of the year have an advantage in the GotY polls due to the recency factor.

We still don't have a clear picture as to what games will be released near the end of 2017. By the end of E3 2017, we'll have a much better picture of the line-up of games for September through December.

On this site, I can't see anything beating Breath of the Wild. Zelda is our thing here.

In the outside world, plenty of games can compete with it.

Based on what people say about the game, I could see BotW even LFFing Ocarina in a game contest.

It's got that much love.

If FF7 Remake comes out near the end of the year and knocks it out of the park we might have a fun match. I don't think the game has a release date at this point, though.

Based on the reception it's gotten, I think BotW is going to sweep the various GotY awards. Multiple sites are saying, "This is how open-world games should be done" and many of the various Switch launch issues have been overshadowed by Zelda simply being that damn good. It really is a once-in-a-generation kind of game, and while there are still definitely good games coming out this year (and some great ones that just came out besides Zelda), I think that sense of "Wow" will propel BotW to a ton of awards from the major players.

I can't see FF7R coming out before 2019. This is Square Enix we're talking about, after all.

I haven't played Breath yet, but we've had amazing open world games for years. Nintendo gets sucked off by reviewers to such a stupid degree.

This might be the case often, but Breath of the Wild is legitimately fantastic and deserves all the praise it gets. I'm very surprised at how much I'm enjoying it.

I see I'm gonna end up buying a Switch just because of this game.

That's probably what at least half the buyers so far did anyway.

I remember there was some hate towards the remake when it was confirmed to be an episodic game. That is, the game won't be released as a full game from the start, but in the form of multiple episodes over time. This could hurt the game's chances of patching up the declining strength of the game in the contests.

Good to know, my friend. You're definitely a guy I know won't BS me.

I mean I'm not that far yet and of course no game will be liked by everyone, but BotW fixes basically every issue 3D Zeldas had, and given your opinions of at least WW and TP, I'm sure you'll appareciate what they've done this time. Personally I'm not huge on large overworld games because it often means they focused way too little on ingame depth and a vast great looking overworld doesn't equal a good one. Xenoblade X is a good example of this. BotW nailed it though. I keep losing many hours in the game on busy days without actually progressing the story at all, it has me completely hooked.

Are there dungeons?

Yes. I went a very long time without actually getting to one though and I'm still only at one.

Probaly my favorite Zelda game. Only probably, because I find it hard to compare it to Majora's Mask, which has been my favorite until now.

You got a Wii U for Smash, right? Haven't looked into version differences, but they should be minimal. You should definitely get it.

Assuming we have a 128 entrant contest, which contest format would you prefer in terms of how many matches to run per day in each round of the contest:

4 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 (63 days)
4 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 (55 days)
4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 (51 days)
4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 (49 days)
4 - 4 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 (47 days)
4 - 4 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 (43 days)
4 - 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 (41 days)

Our previous contest ran for 41 days, although the original plan was a 47 day contest. Since this upcoming contest will not have the issue of potentially overlapping with the Christmas break, we could very well go with a 63 day contest. Though I'm not sure everyone would be on board with a 63 day contest.

As we saw from the previous contest, any attempt to rally for a specific match will inadvertently affect the other matches running on the same day. To minimize the number of matches that could be affected by rally spillover, the contest should transition to 1 match per day as early as possible in the contest.

Personally, I would favor the 55 day schedule, followed by the 51 day schedule as my second option.

It's fairly easy to miss that topic since it's not a sticky topic, plus it's on page 2 of the board (if you run 50 posts per page).

Division finals are great matched. Those should be 1 a day.

I hope I don't see Undertale characters if it's a character contest. Seriously. Specially because I don't want to see Frisk(For example) pulling a Draven.

It's difficult for lightning to strike the same place twice. If a surprise character will step up and win this, my guess is that it has to be someone new (not League, not Undertale), and man, you're gonna need a LOT of rally fuel to beat Link this year.

Look at the type of media that people are releasing from within BotW - this is the first time in two decades that Link is the legit coolest character in gaming again.
