Hmm..

This contest will be good for me to figure out my favorite years in life period.

The major reason I'm "eh" on this contest is I never care about what year something comes out. For me, 1999 is the best year of gaming ever. Played FF7, FFT, Ocarina, Majora's Mask, FF8, FF9, and made lifelong friends. Junior year of high school, the works.

Like none of those games came out in 1999, so on poll day it'll be "uh well I guess these games I like came out in 98?".

Yeah....neither Majora's Mask nor FFIX came out in '99.....both came out the year after.

FFVIII did actually come out in '99 though.

Yeah the summer of 2000 was after my junior year, not before. I always get this crap backwards somehow.

But you get the point. And then right after all that was Melee and FFX. No stretch of gaming can touch all that.

Dude good to see you! Clearly, considering this is our first contest in two years and we haven't even filled half a stats topic discussing it, we're not as HYPE as we used to be. Remember when Kefka/Vercetti filled six topics in one day?

Well the contest idea has very little to discuss

Let's hope the entry period isn't too long, because this contest isn't going to be able to sustain a month of bracket discussion.

Yeah, it's hard to discuss anything because there are too many unknowns at this point.

Like many of the previous contests, I'm expecting an entry period of about 2 weeks.

Hopefully I can find the time to rediscover picsmithing for this contest. Pictures should be really fun this time around, especially for the retro years.

As long as the notable games are listed on the side of the match pics, the contest participants will hopefully perform relatively consistently. However, if Link, Cloud, Mario, and other popular characters start dominating the pictures in the later rounds, as pic-makers will likely want to do, then I guess there won't be much consistency....

Pic factor has always been acknowledged by some people. Not as much back in the old days as now, though. (creativename was one of them back then) At least Riku/Snake in the the Fall 2007 contest proved that Sora's underperformance on Snake in 2005 was not due to SFF, but due to having a major pic disadvantage. But there are, of course, other matches where there should have been a big pic advantage, but the results don't reflect that.

Hopefully not like the former, haha. More like the latter I was referring to. Even with several characters in each pic, I don't feel so good about consistent strength. But who really knows?

Sonic/Smadh made for an excellent picture though, even if those sprites weren't in Smash games.

I still think the Sonic/Smash Bros. one is ridiculous because those sprites don't even come from Smash Bros.

Using Gba sprites for Sonic is worse IMO.

I love these polls.

Hell, the rankings never change. It's always fourth > second > third > first > last. Actually kinda amazing it's so consistent.

They ought to do some sort of behavioral study on these polls.

We still need more submissions for the Best Year in Gaming, particularly the pre-1985 years. If anyone wants to chip in it would be greatly appreciated.

1972-1984 needs writing. The rest are done.

I've done 73, 74 and 81. I'll continue working on the pre-Atari 2600 era since I assume no one wants to do it...

Holy s***, today's poll has extremely terrible vote totals at the freeze so far. The 133 votes at the freeze is even lower than the worst 2016 GotY poll (137 votes in the Xbox One poll). Today's poll could quite possibly end up with less than 10000 votes, making it one of the few non-GotY polls to achieve such a feat.

It's missing the all-important "I don't know but whatever they call it, the thing should die in a fire" option.
