Is any of the rest of this OP even relevant anymore in this brave new era of contests? I think now's a prime return for the "chop off a chicken's head and see where it lands" bracket strategy.

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Extrapolated Standings (X-Stats) - The mathematical "strength" of a contestant that's determined based on their performance relative to the rest of the field. This number is typically based on the contest entrant's loss, but adjustments are sometimes made. See above for a watered down explanation for how the stats are calculated.

LPF - Last Place Factor, which a term used in matches that have three or four entrants. Usually when there is an obvious choice for last place, that entrant performs weaker than usual since voters are smart enough these dates to put their votes on something that matters. A good example is Link/Shepard/Draven.

ASV - After school vote, which is usually the biggest trend in a poll other than the first hour and the morning vote.

I'd be interested in seeing this, but only as a mini-contest. The 2 mini-contests that CJayC ran both had one thing in common - they were immediately followed by a larger contest within less than 2 months of the mini-contest's final match. I wouldn't have any issue with a Pokemon Character Battle if it was a 31 day contest and immediately followed by a larger contest (with a break of about 30-45 days between contests).

With a Pokemon Character Battle, we could have a 64 entrant contest in just 31 days with the following set-up:

Round 1 - 4 matches per day
Round 2 - 2 matches per day
Round 3 and beyond - 1 match per day

You are correct; in the era of low votals and rallies win everything, stats and history don't mean anything.

The "I'm not a Pokemon fan" option is doing a lot better in today's poll compared to the same poll for Pokemon X/Y. Although I do suppose this poll has a major issue because you really don't have an option to vote for if you have no interest in buying the game but still consider yourself a fan of Pokemon.

So what's the current board consensus on what is desired from the next contest?

Me? I'd like to see another 1v1 character battle, with the excellent "4 matches at once" format in early rounds only.

I'd like the same. Though I think division finals and quarter-finals should be 1 match a day like it was initially planned for this contest.

This is my preferred format for the next contest:

Round 1 - 4 matches per day
Round 2 - 2 matches per day
Round 3 - 2 matches per day
Round 4 and beyond - 1 match per day

With a 128 character bracket, this results in a 55 day contest. On days where one of the matches gets a rally, the other matches get screwed up as well. The earlier we start having 1 match per day, the better it is for the contest as a whole because at least a rally can't screw up more than 3 rounds of matches.

Keep four matches a day throughout but run four separate contests instead.

The most obvious one is a badge for simply filling out a bracket.

Making it into the contest leaderboard at least once should also get a badge.

I already put a suggestion forward for a badge just for filling out a bracket.

I suppose a badge for making it onto the contest leaderboard at least once (even if it's only for one day) could get a badge too, but someone else can put that suggestion forward if they wish to.

Nope, it isn't even decided by that. The exact time in which you last updated your bracket entry decides what users get on the leaderboard in the event of a tiebreaker situation. This means if you submitted (or last updated) your bracket near the start of the bracket entry phase, you have more priority over most other users in terms of making it on the leaderboard. For this reason, you don't want to update your bracket closer to the end of the bracket entry phase.

that's some killer info luster, i had no idea that it worked that way and just assumed it would be sorted alphabetically.

I once got like 6 or 7 accounts on the leaderboard after the first day of SC2K5 because I filled them all out as quickly as I could. My favorites bracket with Squall winning was #1 for like the first week of the contest.

Gyarados is a fairly liked and known pokemon though, that's the only pokemon who have no legs have a shot at glados
