~*Say What? Common Stats Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Extrapolated Standings (X-Stats) - The mathematical "strength" of a contestant that's determined based on their performance relative to the rest of the field. This number is typically based on the contest entrant's loss, but adjustments are sometimes made. See above for a watered down explanation for how the stats are calculated.

LPF - Last Place Factor, which a term used in matches that have three or four entrants. Usually when there is an obvious choice for last place, that entrant performs weaker than usual since voters are smart enough these dates to put their votes on something that matters. A good example is Link/Shepard/Draven.

ASV - After school vote, which is usually the biggest trend in a poll other than the first hour and the morning vote.

the look on everyone on the Thunder when he just pulled up from 35 feet and drained it like it was nothing is priceless

you have to almost full court guard him now
In the 90s teams would have done this, but hand checking isn't allowed anymore.

Anyways, it sucks we can't even get a Pokemon RBY playrate poll. The playrate should be about 85% based on past Pokemon related polls where the "I've never played Pokemon" option has generally ranged from 11% to 14%.

Tomorrow, I'll look forward to the Leap Year poll and tracking poll updates and trends.

Clearly we need another Xenogears poll.

So in today's Leap Year Day poll, 2 of the options from the 2012 poll are nowhere to be found in today's poll, so that could make it a bit harder to directly compare trends from the 2012 poll and the 2016 poll. I'll still be tracking poll updates today.

"Absolutely nothing, same as always", an option not present in the 2012 poll, is almost straight up winning today's poll. Though I don't expect that option to win today as trends should favor "Going to work, same as always" here.

"Going to school, same as always" is already getting doubled by "Going to work, same as always" at the freeze today, where as they were almost dead even in the final results of the 2012 poll. This is going to get a lot worse later tonight when the trends really begin to show up.

Man March seems lame for releases. Then it turns it up x 100 in April.
I was a bit surprised to see OoT 3D in today's poll. I looked up OoT 3D and saw that it was a "Nintendo Selects" thing:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/3ds/997842-the-legend-of-zelda-ocarina-of-time-3d/data

I don't think that's really worthy of being included on this poll.

Poll updates and trend charts for yesterday's poll:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1q2oIHYONfGB8aelXsUpCJ6bI2OgYItUtaQDKs7EYCY0/pub?gid=1964933079

I chose to display the trend charts for the 2012 and 2016 polls side by side to make it easier to compare the differences in trends between the 2 polls. A lot has changed in the 4 years between the 2 polls. The school and work options were almost dead even in the 2012 poll, while the school option gets almost quadrupled by the work option in the 2016 poll.

The 2012 poll was the first time that we personally saw the After Work Vote (AWV) in action. Starting from a max lead of 1064 for the work option, the school option quickly chopped off about 600 votes in about 3 hours once the ASV started and appeared to be on pace to complete the comeback. And then around 5:30 PM, the work option actually starts to stall the school option, something that I was not expecting at all. Even during the AWV, the school option still had a slight edge over the work option. But getting stalled out like that would ultimately prevent the school option from finishing the comeback.

The 2016 poll once again had an AWV and it also started at 5:30 PM. Since the average age of the site has gone way up since 2012, it should be reasonable to assume the AWV will be stronger in the 2016 poll than the 2012 poll. This was certainly the case here, even when factoring in that smartphones make it much easier to vote in the poll while at work. I don't think smartphones have killed trends because voting in the poll from work isn't something that is important enough for someone to bust out their smartphone to vote in the poll. They would be much more likely to visit social media sites and other websites to pass the time during work. Although I could see someone being more likely to go on GameFAQs to vote in a contest match, compared to a regular poll.

In the 2012 poll, the work option gained a total of 0.40% during the AWV (30.56% to 30.96%). In the 2016 poll, the same option gained a total of 0.89% during the AWV (46.35% to 47.24%) and a total of 1.18% when you also include the final 2 hours of the poll. So the AWV was definitely stronger in the 2016 poll. One thing that sets the AWV apart from the ASV is that the AWV doesn't drop off near the end of the poll. While the ASV drops off a bit during the final 2 hours of the poll when the SNV starts up.

The day vote used to be synonymous with the school day coming to a close around 2:30 PM and the kiddies getting home from school, but that is no longer the case here. "Going to school" performs best during the Power Hour, since we know from previous age polls that the Power Hour voters have the lowest average age out of all the time periods in the polls. It drops off hard during the night vote, much like what happened in the 2012 poll. Once the morning vote starts, it starts to recover from its bad night vote. By the time we get to the later part of the morning vote, the day vote is now at full strength and "Going to school" performs better during this time period compared to the early morning vote or the night vote. The ASV spike that we saw in the 2012 poll does not show up in this poll, although it does have an above average ASV here. "Going to school" actually performs better during the SNV than the ASV.

"Going to work" has an awful board and Power Hour, similarly to the 2012 poll and continues to perform bad during the night vote. The morning vote is where it is at its strongest. It has 3 strong hours form 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM during the morning and then it drops off a bit after 10:00 AM. At about 1:00 PM and lasting for 2 hours, there is a midday spike that is most likely caused by people voting during their lunch break. "Going to work" then drops off again after 3:00 PM before the AWV kicks in at 5:30 PM and continues for the rest of the poll.

"Absolutely nothing" has a strong board vote and Power Hour. It continues to remain strong during the night vote. When the morning vote starts, it drops off hard and remains fairly stable until the SNV kicks in. Then it drops off even more during the SNV, easily its worst time period.

The final 2 options, "Celebrating" and "Extra day?" are not really relevant to this poll. "Celebrating" has the most consistent trends overall. "Extra day?" has a good Power Hour and performs even better during the night vote, before dropping off during the morning vote and remaining fairly consistent for the rest of the poll.

Judging from the poll graphs, it seems like Ocarina of Time 3D was changed to Twilight Princess HD around 1:30 AM. As a result, the option formerly occupied by OoT 3D gained a lot of percentage. Poor Pokken Tournament, it got hurt really bad by this change and is now almost losing to The Division.

Interesting poll today. Grand Theft Auto is doing unusually well in this poll, even though I don't view it as much of a 2D series since the vast majority of GTA's history happened after it transitioned to 3D.

GTA winning a poll is very mind-blowing.

Super Mario Bros. is getting wrecked very hard in this poll. Maybe it's getting hurt by the fact that modern day Nintendo is viewed more negatively these days because of the Wii and now the struggling Wii U.

GTA doing well is not surprising, the games were almost niche before GTA3 came out. I'm surprised Metal Gear isn't doing better, maybe it's because not many people played the 2D games.

When I saw today's poll, I assumed we were going to get extremely s***ty vote totals since there is no option for people who don't watch any weekly TV series.
