As a whole, new games will do better than old games. It's just that the best old games are stronger than the best new games. This last contest was different than before because there was no division by era and so we only got the very best old games in. We didn't have to trudge through Tecmo Super Bowl, the original Prince of Persia, River City Ransom, Crystalis, and all those other games that were bottom of the barrel in 2009.

Well, the boxer was originally Mike Bison in Japan, an obvious ripoff of Mike Tyson. Capcom of America was afraid they'd get sued if they kept the name, so they switched things around and just left the dictator version as "M. Bison." I guess they thought Vega wouldn't fit the boxer very well, so they switched his name around with the other one, since I guess "Vega" sounds more Spanish.

Sagat's name was already established in SF1, so they couldn't really change his name, so yeah!

(they also gave Ken the last name "Masters" so they could sell Street Fighter action figures without getting sued by Mattel! the more you know)

Actually, it's kind of interesting comparing the three SF2 character polls. Pretty much the only three characters that have seen any noticeable shift across the three polls are Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li. Ryu and Ken have lost quite a bit while Chun-Li has gained a lot.

We're currently having a poll glitch right now. The new poll has gone live, but it's not showing up on the homepage. Actually, the new poll has an unusually high number of votes for a poll not showing up on the homepage as there are very brief spurts where the poll will show up on the homepage (allowing people to vote).

Poll updates and trend charts for yesterday's poll:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TnBp_LXyOHFmZWF1HJNwV9kwvzQJX414l-jpX8vWCZk/pub?gid=348339986

Yesterday's poll was re-run 3 years after the previous poll that came before it, so we get to see the impact of the site's average age going way up over the past 3 years. Due to the poll glitch in yesterday's poll, I extended the board vote to include the first 10 minutes instead of the normal 5 minutes. All other time periods are left untouched.

"Yes, Married" had the most extreme trends in this poll. It had an awful board vote and Power Hour and then continued to have an awful night vote. But once that morning vote kicked in, it performed much better and maintained that for the rest of the poll. The last 18 hours of this poll is a completely different animal than the first 6 hours. After 6:00 AM, "Yes, Married" gained a total of 3.73% for the rest of the poll.

"Yes, we're serious" has fairly similar trends to "Yes, Married", but are much less extreme. It also has a bad board vote and Power Hour. It performs better during the night vote, but still below average compared to its final percentage. When the morning vote kicks in, "Yes, we're serious" doesn't really start to take off like we saw with "Yes, Married". Only after we get into the later part of the morning vote does "Yes, we're serious" actually start performing better. "Yes, we're serious" has a good day vote and SNV. After 6:00 AM, "Yes, we're serious" only gains a total of 1.53% for the rest of the poll, a far less overall percentage gain compared to "Yes, Married".

"Yes, not that serious" has the most consistent trends overall. It doesn't really have strong time periods or weak time periods.

"No, better off without one" has a strong board vote, but does drop off pretty hard after the freeze. Even with that hard drop off, it still has a good Power Hour overall. It maintains the exact same level of night vote strength that it showed during the Power Hour. When the morning vote kicks in, it drops off pretty hard and performs worst during the morning vote, day vote, and SNV. After 6:00 AM, "No, better off without one" lost a total of 3.07% for the rest of the poll.

"No, I wish I had someone" has fairly similar trends to "No, better off without one", although they are less extreme. "No, I wish I had someone" has a good board vote and Power Hour. The night vote is only slightly worse than the Power Hour. Although it does drop off when the morning vote kicks in, it is a less extreme drop off. "No, I wish I had someone" is able to hold up much better during the morning/day vote compared to "No, better off without one" and only loses a total of 2.22% for the rest of the poll after 6:00 AM.

When it comes to the overall impact of the increasing average age of the site's users, this has resulted in "Yes, Married" gaining about 3.50% in the 3 years since the 2013 poll. While "Yes, we're serious" loses almost 3% during the same time period. "No, I wish I had someone" has also lost about 3% in the past 3 years and that percentage has gone towards "No, better off without one". "Yes, not that serious" also lost some percentage in the past 3 years and I assume some of that lost percentage has gone towards "No, better off without one" and "Yes, we're serious".

Hm, that confirms part of my suspicion. Looks like Gens 3-6 are leeching each other due to modern fans being divided on which of Emerald/Platinum/HGSS/B2W2/etc. is best, while Gens 1 and 2 are more separate.

Still kind of scary that Gen 1 actually gained a little percentage despite a new gen in the mix.

Never did get around to giving out my thoughts on the Pokemon series poll, so I'll do it now.

The overall result between Gen 1 and Gen 2 directly hasn't changed that much between those 2 polls and even from the RBY/GSC contest match during the 4-way Games Contest. For reference, the 3 polls that place RBY and GSC up against each other:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/3486-division-5-round-2-pokemon-zelda-mm-mgs-pokemon-gs
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/5289-which-pokemon-generation-has-been-your-all-time-favorite-so
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/6234-what-is-your-all-time-favorite-pokemon-generation

First poll - RBY gets 58.12% on GSC
Second poll - 57.00% on GSC
Third poll - 57.76% on GSC

Those head to head results between RBY and GSC are fairly close together. Based on second and third polls I linked to (the 2 Pokemon series polls), it seems as though every future Pokemon generation is expected to have around the same strength as Gen 5 and Gen 6. Both Gen 5 and Gen 6 are of similar strength and modern Pokemon only appeals to a smaller segment of the overall population that has played at least one Pokemon game during their lifetime, so it seems like a logical trend for later generations to have around the same strength as Gen 5 and Gen 6.

So whenever the first Gen 7 games comes out and later appears in a future contest, you can pretty much set it to be equal to Gen 6 and have a pretty good estimate of its contest strength. This estimate should work out pretty well as long as the Gen 7 games have been out for at least one full year prior to their contest debut, as one full year should be enough time for most hardcore fans to play the games.

So it is nostalgia then?

Did you miss the part where I said new Nintendo games are also on average not that good?

The NSMB series is s***, new Zelda is mostly s***. Pokemon refuses to change meaningfully except for the hardcore, SSB4 is a masterpiece, etc.

Are you sure you're it's not nostalgia? Your post is filled with complete irony.

I had an incredible blast with the NSMB games. I enjoyed every minute of it and would go as far as to say that they're just as good as the first five games in the series (SMB1-SMW plus Lost Levels). Heck, I would gladly take NSMB over Mario 2 and Mario Land, and maybe even Mario Land 2. Not to mention that Super Mario Maker has been an insane amount of fun for me.

What is your issue with these newer Mario games? Did the physics bother you? The level design? The aesthetics? Would you rather see Nintendo do what Capcom did and do nostalgia throwbacks like Mega Man 9 and 10, which, although good games, would be even a bigger rehash than Nintendo's critics currently say? Or do you simply no longer like the genre?

And even if we put that aside, the Mario Galaxy games and Mario 3D World get lots of praise. They also didn't so hot or were omitted altogether.

And concerning Zelda, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess seemed to do fine. Games like ALBW have gotten critical praise as mentioned by another user, yet failed to get into the contest. The DS and Wii games likewise even if they have some vocal critics.

As for Pokemon it is true that the formula has changed little since its inception, but using your logic Pokemon R/B/Y and G/S/C shouldn't be so strong if it wasn't for nostalgia. If a person new into Pokemon ended up disliking a Gen 6 game what makes you think he'd like the earlier games? Despite the similarities in gameplay the contest strength between the newer games and the older ones is vast. The explanation? Nostalgia.

So yeah, I'm going to have to disagree with you. Nintendo still makes plenty of great games (but also have had their misses just like in the past when the older games were released), and what kept them from doing well in the contests is nostalgia for the older games, whether they hold up or not.

So it truly is nostalgia as some of us posters have said. And for that I say to you and to these GameFAQs voters: Lose the nostalgia goggles.

That's usually how it works, yeah.

I generally love all things Mario, but NSMB is not good as a single player experience. As a multiplayer experience, it's a blast because it's fun to troll your friends, but the content is lacking in single player.

5) Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen

Kirby's Super Star looked kind of decent in 2009. 20% as a last place game SFFed by Super Mario 64 isn't terrible.

We've never really gotten the chance to see low-tier Zelda games this site doesn't care about in a contest poll but I wouldn't be too surprised if they met the same fate as low-tier Mario.

2/26/2016 - Can you name all nineteen starter Pokemon?
2/27/2016 - Over the course of your life, how many different Pokemon have you caught?
2/28/2016 - I have no idea. Probably an original poll idea.
2/29/2016 - What are you doing with your extra day this year?

I'm disappointed that we won't be getting a Pokemon RBYG playrate or ownership poll on the 20th anniversary of the original Japanese release. Although maybe that Pokemon RBYG playrate/ownership poll has a chance of happening on the February 28th poll instead.

As for the poll happening on Leap Year Day, we'll get to see what happens to the trends in that poll because the ASV has completely collapsed since the last time we had that poll in 2012. The 2012 Leap Year Day poll was the first time we saw evidence of an "After Work Vote" in action. The timing of the 2012 Leap Year Day poll was perfect, since it happened at a time when the ASV still existed to some extent (it certainly wasn't as strong as the ASV of 2009 or earlier), but also during a time when we had a decent percentage of voters in the "28 or older" age group as they would be most likely to contribute towards an After Work Vote.
