I still find it odd that this site can't really retain the traffic spikes from matchups involving Draven and Undertale. I would think that a lot of people who play these games would at least throw some votes for other matchups here and there.

Presumably they only come when the poll is brought to their attention, and well, that only happens on rally days.

Now if you want an interesting theory that explains why Bacon thinks the majority of the extra votes are coming from Reddit despite there not being any real evidence of big traction on Reddit...

The "method" out there that exists to break our anti-stuffing methods spoofs reddit referral data. Whoever made it tailored it specifically for that for the votes to "blend in" with the reddit rallies that are easily visible (sometime between round 1 and round 2), which at the time was the Draven rally. Now they (or whatever parties they've given their code/method to) are just reusing the same method cause Bacon hasn't figured out yet and is showing no signs of actually figuring it out yet.

Now being reused, the majority of votes are again coming "from reddit" because the majority of the votes are using the same method the Draven thing did, which spoofs reddit referral data.

It would make a lot of sense. THIS I will admit is more speculation than just analyzing the data and will allow moon landing crap to be thrown at me for, but it does make some degree of sense to me.

Better get used to it because every single match is going to have rallies going forward.

I am definitely not addressing the rest of this topic trainwreck but, in a word, duh.

Dumb rallies are hardly new and neither is me making fun of them.

I also like how Mario/Cloud 2002 keeps getting brought up like the board didn't get pissed off as hell at that result or that it didn't catapult Mario into the villain of the 2002 contest.

Or that Mario/Crono 2003 didn't turn Mario into such a villain that Sephiroth eviscerated him the next round.

I liked this topic better when Wylvane was making t**** comparisons. Draven and Undertale could have cheated, but I don't know what a user can see to point that out definitively now and there's nobody with better information (or looser passwords, granted) than SBAllen.

Calling Undertale anything but fodder before its first rally is a joke though. Not one game from 2012 has looked decent at all since 2012, and ME3 is the most popular game to hate in some time. That game was doubling Undertale for maybe 17 hours or so. This is in a contest where -- outside of Undertale when it's rallied -- most other indie games or games from 2015 looked unimpressive or weak.

If the logic's that rallies of this magnatude are part of Undertale's intrinsic strength, let's fast forward to the next BGE that Undertale is in. Lightning probably doesn't strike twice, right? It already won a championship and is no longer the hip new game...so even if it became significantly stronger with GameFAQs regulars since winning this contest, would you say Undertale dropped a lot in strength just because tumblr didn't support it? That idea sounds misleading to me.

I think I get your point that each match has a life of its own, but it's wrong and intentionally dramatic to say this is Undertale's natural strength. It's not, not anymore than ME3 is naturally #2.

ROUND 7 – DAY 1 – FINALS

Match CXXVII: (6) Undertale vs. (1) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Previous Rounds

Undertale
50.95% against Mass Effect 3
55.74% against Fallout 3
54.84% against Super Mario World
51.52% against Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow/Green
51.33% against Super Mario 64

64.96% against Final Fantasy IX
68.18% against Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
59.90% against The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
67.50% against Super Mario RPG

Analysis

Welcome to the finals. Usually the finals aren’t that interesting since an entrant is always the big favourite though in a twist that big favourite is Undertale. After over 175k votes cast Melee couldn’t defeat it so what chance would Ocarina of Time have? Some people have called Undertale a weaker Draven, but it has clearly shown to be on another level, even compared with Round 2 Draven.

So what would it take for Ocarina of Time to win? Timing. As seen with Melee as soon as you take the lead the match is over as Undertale takes it up to another gear. The only way I see Undertale ever losing is if you take the lead right at the end of the match. But that would require great restraint on Zelda fans to keep it close and the way Tumblr works would require fans to adjust their rallying throughout the day as Undertale becomes strong during the ASV. It just seems to require too much coordination in order to get right.

charmander6000’s Bracket: LoZ: Ocarina of Time > Super Mario 64

charmander6000’s Prediction: Undertale wins, 52.32% - 47.68%

Ulti's showing his ignorance again. The only pre-Draven rally that required a lot of outside support was Starcraft in 2004. Everything else was small potatoes and I don't think there were any results changed due to rallies, aside from the already super close matches like Frog/Chief or Frog/Liquid.

Planet Gamecube had to rally for Mario in 2002, and on top of that the match with Cloud happened on the day Sunshine came out. Both sides rallied like mad.

They have always been there in high-profile matches, or close matches. You know how something comes back, then there's usually a stall right when the tie happens? That's a rally, albeit on a smaller scale.

Leon my point is you can't just say something is fodder based on pre-rally numbers. Rallies are a part of something's strength. yoblazer banged this point home and it's worth repeating: contests are not won by math, and now more than ever before, every match is its own match. The first 17 hours of the Mass Effect 3 match isn't different from the last 7. I can see you hating them if your side barely wins though, I get it. Squall probably rallied to beat Luigi though, so hey!

This isn't about embracing something new. It's always been there. Social media has just made it go to a whole new level.

Agreed. Except the Squall thing I dunno about that >_> I would say Squall rallied too just because every close match has rallying, but Luigi likely had more exterior votes behind him.

Another consideration that we take into account is the bandwagon effect with certain games. It's almost impossible to calculate it but we all consider it and don't complain about it. Part of the fun is trying to predict the unpredictable. That's where your whacky theories get borne out. Also, over 80% of the contest still had matches won by good old fashioned math.

The only thing I might say to mitigate someone getting lucky with joke entry picks to win the contest is to make the last few rounds much less heavily weighted in points. I wouldn't be upset with a linear progression of points per match in each round going 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10. So picking the final winner gets more weight because you should be rewarded for that, but it's not enough to win you the whole tournament if you f***ed up a LOT of other picks.
