GameFAQs Contests
Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 1251
I
don't remember the board's reaction to Melee, but the Melee fanbase is
at an entirely different level in terms of fanaticism post-Brawl than
they were pre-Brawl. --- http://i.imgur.com/3DwCNLJ.gif |
Watch what happens tomorrow with the Melee fanbase if If you can. --- Goddamn Metal Gear Solid 3 |
They brought that on themselves. A loss to CT or even FF7 would have been much easier to take than a loss to Undertale. --- No amount of rallying would let me beat raytan7585. Congrats to raytan7585 for winning the CB9 Guru Contest! |
Well, the only reason they rallied so much (and part of why it was so effective) was because of that fanaticism. If RE4 was easy to rally for, I'm sure it could get a nice boost in strength for the same reason...! --- http://i.imgur.com/3DwCNLJ.gif |

Of course they did! It was the very first contest of any kind, and Mario is the icon of the video game world. Before anyone knew anything about these sorts of contests, you naturally went with casual appeal popular icons. It had absolutely zero to do with 'is XXX website going to be rallied for XXX character.' These arguments seem so over the top. You know way better than this. --- satoru iwata |
Well, it's a lot of hindsight bias, like when Ulti says, "THE ENTIRE INTERNET RALLIED CLOUD AGAINST LINK!" this argument was literally never made before two weeks ago --- http://i.imgur.com/3DwCNLJ.gif |
Yes,
exactly! This whole 'rallies have always existed all the time
everywhere' not only misses the point to what people are complaining
about, but is some hardcore revisionist history. StarCraft in 04 was our
first real taste of the kind of rallying people do not like, and then
it might as well have been non-existent in its current form until last
contest with Draven. Maybe L-Block? Can't remember if that was any kind
of rallying, or just an enormous jokey bandwagon. Probably both. True facts: GameFAQs voted Cloud over Link. Tumblr is voting Undertale to champion. --- satoru iwata (edited 12/12/2015 12:19:10 PM)report |
LeonhartFour posted... At least it won't end early! That's because they're not justified. Literally losing to random Zelda and Mario games. I say this as someone who really likes Twilight Princess and Super Mario RPG (based on what little I've played of it, I tried playing it years ago and got stuck somewhere, then restarted last year but just forgot about it quickly). But they're not in RE4's league at all. RE4 losing to Twilight Princess is like Super Mario 64 losing to Sonic Adventure. --- "Nothing I could do!" -Darksydephil |
...Cloud looked straight up stronger than Link in 2003. Stronger than he actually won by, honestly (65% ON MAGUS).
Cloud/Link 2003 looks like a big-ass Link rally, not the other way
around. Zelda's always had the rally edge on Final Fantasy. --- Goddamn Metal Gear Solid 3 |

A sort of Franchise Original Sin for GameFAQs contests if you will - StarCraft in '04, then L-Block in '07, then Missingno in '10, then Draven and Undertale. --- "Nothing I could do!" -Darksydephil |
I blame Crono for anything Missingno related What a joker letting a glitch beat him --- satoru iwata |
Starcraft also blatantly cheated in 2004, but that's a story for another time! I mean, if people want to rally in a 50/50 match and go back and forth, sure, whatever. Those matches would have been close anyway. It kills a lot of the fun now because rallies are much more overwhelming than they used to be, in part due to our reduced vote totals and in part just because of the social media age. Rallies could never make the significant dent then that they do now. --- http://i.imgur.com/3DwCNLJ.gif |
Karma Hunter posted... Watch what happens tomorrow with the Melee fanbase if I honestly don't think there's gonna be any real backlash. I suppose it's possible, especially with the dynamic of rally vs. rally, but while this contest has gotten a lot of participation, I don't feel that it has gotten the same level of emotional investment as other things have for the Melee fanbase. --- I like this guy - Shiny Mewtwo |

Undertale would have literally lost in the first round if it was against anything stronger than Mass Effect 3. Among 11 seeds though that's probably only RE2, maybe also RE1. Also Silent Hill 2 I guess since that's statistically projected to give Mass Effect *2* a close match. Just to ask something, did Mario Galaxy actually finish ahead of FFIV in the x-stats? Does anyone actually take that? --- "Nothing I could do!" -Darksydephil |

Did
2k4 Starcraft even have rally like trends? I've been meaning to go back
and look but never got around to it. Back then we didn't really have
any idea what a rally looked like but we sort of do now. --- No amount of rallying would let me beat raytan7585. Congrats to raytan7585 for winning the CB9 Guru Contest! |

Back then we didn't really have any idea what a rally looked like but we sort of do now. Yes, StarCraft swung 2000 votes with the SNV against Halo, Wind Waker, and SSBM. StarCraft
was great, and was far from an unstoppable rally. It lost to SSBM
because SSBM was just too strong, the rallies couldn't make up a 3800
vote deficit. --- September 1, 2003; November 4, 2007; September 2, 2013 NEVER FORGET. |

Has there ever been a contest where that's been the case aside from 2002? I mean, I wouldn't say it's likely and I'd probably give Melee a maybe 20% chance of pulling it off if it gets that far, but it wouldn't be unprecedently shocking if Melee managed to rally to victory, is what I'm saying. Also, did the ad idea peter out? That's something that could really put this contest over the top. (edited 12/12/2015 2:21:30 PM)report |

Karma Hunter posted... Melee, a 20% chance of beating Ocarina. It beat Chrono Trigger, which most of the people in the stats topic expected to give OoT a run for its money, and pasted its long-time rival FFVII. Rallies are the defining feature of this contest. Under most circumstances, you're right - but you have to take into account the black swan events. The times when everything goes right, one prominent pro player tweets it out, a few other pros get on the bandwagon, it spreads to Twitch... Melee has incredibly variable strength because it's got a wide reservoir of rally support that it hasn't fully tapped into yet, and we have no clue when or if it's going to turn it on. Melee's rally could double in size. Heck, call it a triple. It still wouldn't win. The problem isn't that it can't rally up to OoT's strength indirectly. It's not even a Top 10 game on natural strength, and it'll get SFF crushed by a threatened Ocarina while the backfire on Melee rallies against Zelda will be freaking ginormous. --- Goddamn Metal Gear Solid 3 |
Nanis23 posted... What if SMRPG beat OOT Now this I can get behind. It's about to beat my favorite game out of the remaining 8 anyway. Unfortunately the chance of that happening is absolutely zero. |
I'd
spend money for self-defense with Chrono Trigger. Spending money to
make Ocarina of Time win a GameFAQs contest though..... No. No way. --- September 1, 2003; November 4, 2007; September 2, 2013 NEVER FORGET. |

red sox 777 posted... We may be looking at 160k votes tomorrow, if Gamefaqs votes surge by as much as I think they will. It's a confluence of (1) the semifinals, (2) 1 poll per day, and (3) hype. It's too bad we won't get an unrallied/spillover semifinal match so we can see how much of tomorrow's votals is rallying and how much is Gamefaqs. Assuming we do get the site banner starting with tomorrow's match, we won't have any idea what kind of impact it will have on vote totals since the second semifinal match will have inflated vote totals due to spillover. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as raytan7585, Guru Champ! |
Tomorrow might be the worst if Undertale is ahead oh Melee. Even worse than if it will be ahead of OoT. GotD really dodged a bullet with LoL. The complaints would have put 2013 to shame. |
