Melee's fanbase has snowballed in the past couple years due largely to its reinclusion at Evo, the release of a documentary about its tournaments, and its incorporation into esports/Twitch culture in general. While Smash Wii U has its own strength, being the newest Smash game, and has certainly benefited from the wider interest in Melee, the most dedicated part of the Smash fanbase definitely belongs to Melee. --- I like this guy - Shiny Mewtwo |

I've been asleep so correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like Undertale and Melee took the leads pretty easily. The tumblr rally didn't save FFVII, and the Melee rally didn't save Mario 64. Based on my inclusion in the Melee scene and my whiffs of understanding about Undertale fans, I don't think the cross bias is very strong. Melee fans tend to be Nintendo people, sure, but their allegiance is a lot more for specifically Melee than it is for Nintendo or its characters. Meanwhile, Undertale's popularity imo has a lot more to do with it being a game specifically of our generation, with a tone and style very much in touch with a lot of young people. It also inherited the fandom of Homestuck, another recent and generational work. Which is to say that Undertale's allegiance is not really with RPGs, and their vote probably doesn't help FF7 at all. --- I like this guy - Shiny Mewtwo |

was unaware that Melee apparently had a brief dip in popularity shortly
after Brawl came out which it supposedly managed to recover from.
Thought the game was simply always popular. Though apparently that didn't hold true for Melee's natural strength in this, since everyone's saying Chrono Trigger would have broken 60% on it if Melee didn't catch rallies. --- "Nothing I could do!" -Darksydephil |

have trouble thinking of a fanbase more divided than Pokémon tbh. It's
not even like other fanbases which are like "I like X the best but
(other games) are good too", it's more like each person has generations

Halo. Each game is drastically different from the previous one and has completely different designers and thus design philosophy. There are still people who LAN Halo 1 and despise the rest. Math time: At 11:45, FFIX/OOT had 29505 votes. Melee/CT had 41623 at the same time. The Melee rally added about 11000 votes. Undertale/SMW ended the match with 98833 votes. OOT/FFIX ended with 50912 votes. There was some minor SMW rallying, so let's assume that Undertale added about 47000 total votes with rallying. This match currently has 60577 votes. That means that the match added a total of 31000 votes since it started. Which means, assuming a constant Melee rally from last round until now (and I'm pretty sure the major Melee rally at the time was also all reddit), Undertale has rallied 20000 votes so far. Assuming that the Undertale well isn't infinite but that starting the rally earlier added in a fair amount of potential voters, Undertale has about 40000 rallied votes left. Melee/CT ended with around 22500 total rallied votes. Assuming CT added a few thousand of those, Melee seems to have rally potential for 20000 votes. So Melee has a little under 10000 rallied votes left in it (and more if FFVII catches up). Assuming Undertale has about a 25% blowback, Mario doesn't have a chance. It needs some major rallies from both FFVII and Melee to keep this close. If those two can rally 20000 extra votes with those rallies supporting 80% Mario, this could get close.
