Pokemon's vote intake went up by 51 over the previous update during the same time that Undertale increased its vote intake by 101. So it seems like there is somewhat of a backfire rate going on here.

School is why Pokemon even looks like it has a chance. SSBM faces Undertale on a weekend. It's going to get buried.

SSBM is BY FAR it's strongest on a weekend. This is because tournaments are on Sat/Sun and you have a bunch of people in twitch chats(a bunch being thousands) you can rally to. These kinds of rallies aren't possible on weekdays when there are no big tournaments.

With Draven it was more like

The backfire rate on X/Ryu/Draven was by far the lowest, to a ridiculous degree. And Chie/Jak/Draven was by far the highest (and the one I'm most inclined to believe was actually fully a rally).

Honestly this is the one match I still don't get.
This was so ridiculously over the top compared to the others (the only one that compared was the one during the LoL championship when they put a mod thread and there was a 1000 update).
Well, at least that update wasn't quite as insane and Pokemon actually got 2 more votes on that update compared to the previous one.

I wonder what Link vs Sephiroth in 2003 would've been like

I think Link would have won. They had a match in 2002, and all the brackets would have just picked Link to win a rematch.

No idea who actually would have won or if a rally would have happened, but Link would have been a MASSIVE favorite.

This is not true. Sephiroth's performances that contest were very comparable to Link's. Link may have been the favorite with people but not a "massive" one.

If there was any SFF at all in Cloud vs. Sephiroth, Seph could be ahead of Link.

Link may have been an Oracle favorite due to being overrated. He was indeed favored over Cloud in the Oracle - but that was contrary to the stats. I got the #1 Oracle pick for that match.

I would've got the top pick for Cloud vs. Seph as well - stats said Cloud with 52%. But I couldn't pick Cloud out of pure favoritism :(

Anyway I do believe Seph was entirely capable of edging Link out that year. Stats were extremely predictive that year.

While I believed in Pokemon RBY's ability to get backfire-votes from Undertale's rally, I always wondered how much. I did an experiment in 2005 on the much smaller GameFAQsASCII.com when they did Character Battles, and I just found some of the stats I kept for that:

In a contest where GameFAQsASCII was averaging 84 votes per match, I asked Halo Bungie Online to support Arbiter from Halo 2 over Mega Man. I love Mega Man and Arbiter's okay so this wasn't easy to ask, but it proved backfire rate isn't often very substantial.

Mega Man was winning 60-18 before HBO linked to the match...and once the link came, Arbiter was winning 550-125. Arbiter got 89.11% of those rallied votes over Mega Man, suggesting backfire rate is minimal. The match then shut down twelve hours early and HBO decided not to link to matches any more, suggesting I'm an a******.....

Also uhhh... you realize that that probably very well was stuffed if people felt like it. I mean as little credit as I give this site's anti-votestuffing tech I would be surprised if GameFAQsASCii had anything to speak of.

Basically not really a counter argument-- in fact might lean towards 11% being suspicious since I kinda doubt the place you linked from had like 600 people head over to vote the match.

If we go off previous matches, Undertale should drop off significantly in about an hour to an hour and a half.

Which should not be enough to actually take the lead unless it starts getting votes "as needed"

So prove me wrong Undertale.

none of the big pokemon places care about this contest

serebii flat out refuses to help and even deletes topics about it. that big pokemon page on facebook has basically been silent the whole match, etc

that's the problem trying to rally a bigger game over a small indie title. its much easier to get influential people involved when its about something small.
If it goes over 100k I believe the last time a 1v1 Games Contest match would have had higher votals would be in 2004. Starcraft/Halo had 112k votes, which was a good bit higher than FFVII/CT in the final and FFVII/OoT. Of course, the FFVII/OoT bonus poll after the 2009 4-way contest broke 155k votes.

That's kind of the problem I think. Because it's for RBY, a lot of people will immediately reject it because it's Gen 1. The majority of the Pokemon fanbase detests Gen 1, to the point where they will refuse to vote for it even though it's still Pokemon. If this were an overall franchise vote, things may have gone differently.

Also, most communities like Serebii, Smogon don't care about this sort of thing.

You can't, not using OoT performance this year.

However, it's long been true that OoT as a game is stronger on this site than Link as a character. And Zelda fans rallied Link an ungodly amount as recently as 2013. Reddit, Facebook, twitter, rallies were everywhere. Plus Zelda is quite similar to tumblr in its voting trends, it won't die off during the afternoon and evening.

But for me, the biggest factor is the site banner. It's going to add a ton of votes from GameFAQs when it goes up for the final match.

As impressive as today's rally is, imagine if Pokemon were 10k votes farther ahead when the rally kicked into gear this evening. That's a conservative guess of the numbers OoT is going to bring in.

Every day the rest of your life is changed forever.
GameFAQsASCII was likely real easy to stuff, sure...but considering there were only 78 votes cast before the link was up I would rather believe a Halo fansite could bring 597 people than an outsider wanting to spam hundreds of votes into the match. HBO's admin even made it clear it wouldn't take much to turn the tide:

March 5, 2005

Arbiter vs Mega Man
Over at GameFAQsASCII.com, there's a Character Battle - Arbiter vs Mega Man. Only 75
people have voted at this point - wouldn't take much to sway this one. Thanks,
Harrison. (I gotta say, I really don't understand the point of polls like this; I'm
posting this one because we got a half-dozen emails about it, and I want them to
stop. In fact, I think I'll take this opportunity to lay down new HBO policy - after
this one, we won't be mentioning Character Battle-type polls any more here. So go
vote in this one; it's the last one we'll cover.) (Louis Wu 11:36:34 UTC)

Either way, Mega Man only got 65 votes from however many you think were legitimate.
