This is for the old, pushed out of these battles and never seen again.
This is for the new, doomed to fight and lose.
This is for Magus, fallen from grace.
This is for Bowser, whose genius is lost upon such as these.
This is for Kirby and Ness, who once were top tier long ago.
This is for Cloud, in memory of what was.
This is for the Hero of Time, for the 90 minutes lost.
This is for all who have suffered and lost.

Never give up, never surrender.
Go forth with DETERMINATION.

~*Say What? Common Stats Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Extrapolated Standings - The mathematical "strength" of a contestant that's determined based on their performance relative to the rest of the field. This number is typically based on the contest entrant's loss, but adjustments are sometimes made. See above for a watered down explanation for how the stats are calculated.

Ulti brought up good stats in another topic.

Mario/cloud had like 40k more votes than most of the other top matches in the 2002 contest. Nobody thought that was illegitimate. I literally came to this board from a jurassic Park fansite because of that match. Rallying was just as huge if not bigger back then. Cloud would have slaughtered Mario if not for rallying.

Now I'm totally with people who are annoyed that Tumblr is rallying fodder past heavyweights, but a legitimately strong gamefaqs game with a huge community that was predicted to make an impact and 14 year fandom? It's the exact same thing as "it's frikkin Mario."

The issue is that a rally on Facebook is probably less sustainable than the reddit one. So Nick will probably need to make a few more posts. Reddit should bring in steady votes throughout the day. Facebook brings in big spikes that should go down after a bit.

I'm not inherently against rallies. 4chan rallies were always annoying but they never accomplished anything too screwy so we never really cared. The board consensus was pro- L-block, IIRC. LOL kind of soured us all on reddit, though.

Besides, there's a difference between starting a rally and using a rally to counter a rally, no?

Undertale/SMW from 11:00 to 11:15 - 1364
CT/SSBM from 11:00 to 11:15 - 1035

Now that CT has gotten in the game, CT/SSBM are rallying about 60% as much as Undertale/SMW.

Not interested at all if it has to do it by counter-rallying. That said, I can understand it in the sense that it's "self-defense."

But seeing two games try to see which can bring in the most outside votes? I'll pass.

I guess I'm a little less sour on it when it's a counter-rally for that reason, but it still kinda leaves me feeling conflicted. Like, it's addressing what I feel is the problem by just doubling down on more of it.

I've been saying it from the start: rallies aren't bad as long as they are not god-tier and making all its matches a foregone conclusion. I said several times that the Undertale rally has potential to be fun because it's just big enough to make OoT a debatable match for it. Sucks that it may ruin a great CT-FFVII match due to spillover, which is my only gripe. Also, while Tumblr has been enjoying the GameFAQs salt, they haven't been invading the board to any major degree, which is a good thing.

Whereas Melee rallying smashboards to devastate the contest (Undertale included, don't kid yourself) is just not fun to me.

I'm not big on one-sided rallies -- and most rallies are typically just that, despite how people like to try to rationalize and frame them -- but I can't say I haven't rooted for and hoped Link crushed Draven with his own outside rallies. I'm not gonna rush to Twitter, or a CT hub with 50 active users, but if it wins by rallies itself? That's just correcting the result! I mean CT was apparently crushing Melee with 60% beforehand. Melee people have had to scour the Internet for it to even be competitive!

If you're blindly rooting for CT, that's fine. Really. But be honest about it. If CT had gotten a rally and was up 80-20, the reaction here would be a lot more chipper than it is now.

If CT went from 60% to 80% you mean? ...Maybe. On one hand it wouldn't have flipped a result so there wouldn't be complaining about that. But it'd also likely mean everything was all over and CT would steamroll with it.

I'd be displeased either way.

again i keep seeing accusations that "oh if the rally was the other way you'd be happy" but no, no i wouldn't. And honestly I keep seeing people state the same, and not anyone going, "Yeah, you're right."

Certainly not from the people opposed to rallies in this topic.

Not really, no.
---
Every day the rest of your life is changed forever.
Undertale's victories over Fallout 3 and SMW were never in doubt to anyone who paid attention to what was happening. And the same is true for ME3 once things went critical, but I'll grant the ME3 match if you really want it.

And the only way I think Undertale can lose tomorrow is if RBY pulls off its own successful rally. Which is a non-zero chance sure, but not exciting at all to predict or talk about.

They have a couple of dramatic moments (arti in discord: "Undertale just cut 200". there goes contest) and i personally have fun on the board during the whole mess but I feel there isn't a lot of suspense once the big cuts hit!

Undertale started making big moves a lot earlier against FO3 than ME3, and earlier again against SMW, so it was really not certain, just likely that it would win. Besides, most of the excitement of those matches as gauging RBY and OOT's chances.

On the contrary, I think the board turns into an unreadable disaster when these massive rallies happen which just makes everything worse. It actually hasn't happened with this match, at least not so far, but it does when Undertale has a match for whatever reason.

I'm honestly wishing for the offseason again and I find that kind of sad given how much I personally wanted to see this contest.
