There's a Nintendo hierarchy where Mario 64 is above something like TP (and is probably above anything from the GameCube era onward, now that Melee has declined). This WW performance does not necessarily indicate that Zelda is strong against EVERYTHING (though it usually is), it's more a case that flagship Nintendo stuff will always come to fight against Square. that Mario 64/TP match terrified me. I just couldn't find it in me to
trust Mario to beat Zelda. TP is like a mid-tier Zelda here but it's
still ZELDA, I only took 64 because that 4-way with LTTP looked decent

The poll question for that 1v1 poll also factored into the result, I suppose. The poll question is asking you to compare both games and make a decision on which game is better. This is something that would require you to play both games to make that kind of decision. So the poll is being limited to those who have played both games. As a result, people who have only played one of the games aren't as likely to vote in that poll and those who haven't played either game are very unlikely to vote in that poll. However, contest matches don't have a poll question tied to them and people vote in contest matches even if they have only played one of the games in the match. People vote in contest matches even when they have only played one of the games would mean that games with a higher playrate have an advantage over games with a lower playrate. FFVII has a higher playrate than FFVI, so that's one thing favoring FFVII. Bracket voting is another factor that only exists in contest matches and would also favor FFVII. On the subject of the poll question for that FFVI/FFVII 1v1 poll, if the poll was really being limited to people who have played both games (based on my reasoning earlier), that might also explain the low vote totals in that poll and why it had about 8000 less votes than the large 14-way poll from the day before, even when you consider that FFVII is a proven vote getter when it comes to the contests. If Wind Waker does actually get bandwagon strength if it beats VI and possibly VII. Then FFIX should also beat OoT. And the final should be The Wind Waker vs. FFIX.
