Remember how MGS1 almost lost to FFT in 2004? That should be a warning sign that the game's normal strength level might not have been what we saw in 2009. (Hopefully unneeded disclaimer: FFT has dropped since 2004 but probably not by enough to ever make almost losing to it look good for a supposed elite contender)

The entire series was likely boosted by MGS4 being such a big deal and it could even maintain that for a bit in 2010 as MGS4 started to fall off but in the long term it's probably gone back to baseline.

Does MGSV just not matter at all? I know it burned a lot of fans, but you'd think its critical and commerical success would do something for the series.

Why did people hate MGS5 so much anyway? It was personally my favorite of the series since I loved how it became more open world and had many things to do.

Most people are down on the story. Apparently it doesn't get resolved well in the least.

Bioshock and ME1 both came out on PS3 since the 2010 contest. I can see them being weaker there because they were 360 exclusives.

MGS was already probably well off its high from MGS4, which ended up having a lot of backlash over the years itself, but the disinterest in MGS5 mixed with its very poor fan reception, on top of all the Kojima drama, certainly didn't help MGS. I think there was a brief period where it was an elite series, or maybe just masked by the GOTD contest (JV contest best description ever, courtesy of transience). Where it's at now feels right for a place like GameFAQs.

Nice bump for BioShock there.

Video Games are pretty cool.
It had a very controversial ending, and people didn't like the minimalist story in general. I personally didn't mind, because I always thought the story in those games is severely overrated, so less is more IMO. I can see why hardcore fans would be let down, though.

Repetitive missions, unfinished, poor story, no relevance to the overall storyline, bad characters -- all the criticisms I've seen from people! There's generally this period for the first few hours where people think it's the best MGS game, but by the end, most come away real angry and disappointed.

I haven't had much faith in the strength of non-MGS1 games and we haven't seen Earthbound since 2004. If MGS struggles against SotC that's obviously another story, but I'm not willing to indict it on the basis of its younger brothers who have never had much reason to have a lot of faith in.

Though slippage for MGS as a whole makes sense measuring from Bioshock, unless there was a reason for Bioshock to be underrated in GOTD or the series to have improved as a whole since then.

Earthbound was certainly in 2009, though buried in SFF.

the scary thing about Bioshock is that you'd expect that game to have fallen off along with all the other newer FPS games. it's put up two better-than-expected performances in Fallout and MGS3.

that's despite the fact that SH2 is now projected to get like 39% on MGS3 whelp

It certainly does have a poorer story then the other games... But to me its a video game and its overall gameplay and amount of things to do blew away the other games which made up for a lesser story. It had by far the best sneaking mechanics of the series, and running a whole mercenary organization was great.

I wonder how it would do on other sites. I can see the open world and other modern improvements turning off a lot of Gamefaqs users I guess.

Well yeah, that's what I meant. We don't have a read on it since 2004.

And FFT was a completely different beast in 2004, which produced some pretty screwy results as is (SSBM/MGS2 implies MGS would brutalize SSBM with ease in 2004).

Welcome to the League of Stickies.
EB doesn't worry me about MGS so much as what this means BL2 gets on MGS. It seems like every game that's been around a 2012-game has fallen short.

TWD got 33% on Uncharted 2 before Sonic 2 trounced it. Xenoblade barely lost to DKC2 which escaped its fourpack...but it's the weakest four-pack of the contest. VLR got 21% on ME2, which is now finally making a comeback against Starcraft. ME3 was gonna be the only 2012-game to survive the first round, but then Undertale happened.

MGS better hope BL2 would still be the 2012-GotY, and by a bigger margin than before, or else MGS3...

...oh...oh my Bioshock...

...okay, I'll concede MGS isn't doing well this contest. Before this, the only thing that surprised me was MGS4 losing by as much as it did. I don't think RDR will be super-weak, so...I mean...I wasn't ready to think SotC had a shot at beating two more MGS-games this contest, but maybe now.

Still backing MGS until it happens, but yeesh.

Err, I was talking about which MGS game is more popular. MGS3 love isn't a board 8 deal.

The disproportionate amount of love this place has for MGS3 is absolutely a B8 thing. tran put up a poll and MGS3 70-30d MGS1 or some nonsense.

I would have taken Earthbound to easily beat RDR even pre-contest, let alone after the SNES lovefest we've seen this year. I don't see how SotC has any chance next round unless it randomly decides to hulk up a bandwagon.

The intro mission is amazing. Classic MGS. And there are like 10 other missions that push you down a narrative corridor and advance the plot really well while also letting you do whatever you want within the boundaries of that area. That's when the game shines.

It falls flat when for 30 other missions, it places you in the middle of nowhere and you have to run 500 metres to get to the first outpost, take it out or keep running past it, then get to the next outpost where you have to capture one guy who is completely irrelevant to the main story. Mindbogglingly poor pacing.

The mechanics are definitely MUCH better than any other MGS game, the movement and gunplay and gadgets are awesome. But the story is just so poorly paced and the way the ending is presented is REALLY bad and actually should have been like the midpoint twist unto the rest of the game with a totally new perspective... and also leaves huge plot threads wide open. It's clear the game is completely unfinished, much less finished than ME3 which people revolted against.

Also f*** cassette tapes.

either this is a serious counterrally when everything related to Galaxy 2 failed or I was right about it just being Starcraft's killer night vote and the rally was minimal.

trends! I missed thee!

It seems pretty likely it was a rally. The timing if the rally hitting the top of the subreddit was close to Starcraft hitting it's stride. And when it fell off the subreddit SC lost ground. This is based on posts in this topic.

People also mentioned vote totals going up a bit when the rally started.

Could just be trends, but I lean towards rally.

I wouldn't say it's just a B8 thing either. In most (gamefaqs) MGS boards I've been to, MGS3 pretty consistently beats MGS in polls. Outside that niche, the first one should definetely be stronger though.

Umm I'd still call MGS3 the favorite going in. Yes it's sucked, but Bioshock was no slouch back in 2010, and MGS3 is being hurt by BOTH rallies here. Even if ME2 rallies its reddit community next round, the entire MGS fanbase can counter-rally since it'll have its two most popular games (right?) up at the same time.

I always find it amusing whenever people are surprised by the console-centric, japanese-centric results on Gamefaqs. That said, I've yet to see Planescape do well in a competition that isn't exclusively focused on CRPGs/WRPGs. It's not very mainstream.
