RE4 is like the perfect action game.

It's not that complex or ground-breaking but it's so thrilling.

It isn't? How many third-person shooters were around before RE4? I could definitely be wrong, but I thought it birthed the genre that series like Gears of War and Mass Effect ran with (and eventually made stale). From what I understood, RE4 was the first to do it, and imo is still clearly the best.

The "over the shoulder" 3rd person shooter thing was popularised with RE4 and has been quoted by devs, like those of Gears, to have heavy influence on their games. So yeah.

Max Payne (and derivatives like Dead to Rights), Red Dead Revolver, SOCOM, and a lot of other third-person shooters were popular before Resident Evil 4 hit the market. It didn't so much birth the genre so much as refine and polish it (like how Super Mario 64 wasn't the first 3D platformer or Metal Gear Solid wasn't the first stealth game).
---
Welcome to the League of Stickies.
RE4 also popularized QTE's. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing.

Well the controls in the early Tomb Raider games were pretty good, even if the action was pretty spare.
---
My name is Monica Lewinsky, and I am here to collect the rent.
RE4's big change to the genre was the camera perspective. It influenced Gears, which then went on to set the standard for third-person shooters until now. It was that behind the shoulder angle when shooting that really separated RE4 from other games in the genre.
---
satoru iwata
Other games copied the over the shoulder perspective and QTEs.

They failed to copy RE4's pacing, atmosphere, level design, perfectly cheesy one-liners, action that was given room to breathe, and QTEs that were actually fun.

I don't know about all this! Uncharted is way better than RE4 true facts

Nah I love Uncharted, 2 especially. It being in my top 10 best of all-time. Resident Evil 4 being number 1, but Resident Evil 4 is so much better than any game ever. It basically does everything perfect, and never ceases not to be fun. It's always fun and always will be.

Resident Evil 4 is #1 and you can combine the greatness of 2 through 10 of the best and it still doesn't match Resident Evil 4. GOAT game.

Uncharted 2 isn't even the same kind of experience as RE4. It's a lot more cinematic, on rails, ect. Combat isn't as nearly as big a focus as it is in RE4 (and it's much worse).

Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
The first third of Resident Evil 4 is arguably the best set of 3D gameplay of all time.

ROUND 2 – DAY 8 – ALL OF DIVISION 8

Match XCIII: (1) Metal Gear Solid vs. (8) Earthbound

Previous Rounds

Metal Gear Solid
79.07% against Splatoon

Earthbound
58.62% against Borderlands 2

Analysis

While SNES games have been performing well it would be quite the stretch to see Earthbound win this match. It may have defeated Borderlands 2, but Metal Gear Solid has proven strength. Even with Metal Gear series’ stock being down it would be quite the upset for Earthbound to even be close.

With Metal Gear looking pretty bad this contest people are looking as to whether or not Shadow of the Colossus or Mass Effect 2 could possibly cause an upset. Metal Gear Solid would probably need to be comfortably into the 60s for me to feel comfortable in its ability to win this division.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Metal Gear Solid > Borderlands 2

charmander6000’s Prediction: Metal Gear Solid wins, 65.36% - 34.64%

Match XCIV: (5) Shadow of the Colossus vs. (4) Red Dead Redemption

Previous Rounds

Shadow of the Colossus
72.69% against Team Fortress 2

Red Dead Redemption
63.99% against Bayonetta 2

Analysis

Shadow of the Colossus looked pretty good last round though some of it is attributed to a likely drop in strength of Team Fortress 2. Pre-contest there have been some doubts about Shadow of the Colossus’ strength, but even if you ignore the bandwagon the game is still at least equal to Metal Gear Solid 2 which isn’t too bad.

As well as Red Dead Redemption performed last round it was still against a non-Nintendo Wii U exclusive game. Like GTA Red Dead Redemption just isn’t the type of game GameFAQs likes to play. Honestly I probably wouldn’t take Bayonetta 2 over a weaker Team Fortress 2 so I expect an easy win by Shadow of the Colossus.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Shadow of the Colossus > Red Dead Redemption

charmander6000’s Prediction: Shadow of the Colossus wins, 64.21% - 35.79%

Match XCV: (3) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater vs. (6) BioShock

Previous Rounds

Metal Gear Solid 3
69.50% against Mother 3

BioShock
61.43% against Silent Hill 2

Analysis

Either Mother 3 fans are the most loyal or Metal Gear Solid 3 took quite the drop, the game only did a few percentage points better than Devil May Cry 3 did back in 2010. While I do think Mother 3 fans are quite loyal I think this match best shows that the site is moving away from Metal Gear.

Lucky for Metal Gear Solid 3 BioShock also looked pretty bad last round. BioShock actually put up decent numbers against Kingdom Hearts II back in 2010 and had it maintained its strength we could have had an upset potential. It’s not too surprising that BioShock is weaker now given what we have seen so far. Metal Gear Solid 3 will have to put up decent numbers if it wants to still be considered the favourite for next round, though given how BioShock Infinite looks relative to Resident Evil 4 the number doesn’t need to be too high.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Metal Gear Solid 3 > BioShock

charmander6000’s Prediction: Metal Gear Solid 3 wins, 61.42% - 38.58%

Match XCVI: (7) Starcraft vs. (2) Mass Effect 2

Previous Rounds

Starcraft
74.49% against Destiny

Mass Effect 2
79.08% against Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward

Analysis

Starcraft’s performance last round made people talk about the prospect for an upset. Destiny does have the makings of a weak game; new game, new IP, mixed reviews doesn’t scream to be strong on GameFAQs. At the same time the people that quickly dismissed the game pre-contest were a bit in the wrong.

While Mass Effect 2 is a new game it is one of the exceptions where it is expected to have strength. So far Mass Effect has performed well, albeit against new Nintendo games while Mass Effect 3 would have looked respectable had Undertale not shown up. What gives me the most confidence in Mass Effect 2 is the performance of Skyrim earlier this round. Skyrim scored almost 60% on GoldenEye whom defeated Diablo II.

While Mass Effect 2 may not be as strong as Skyrim I don’t see Starcraft being too much stronger than Diablo II, if it even is stronger. This gives Mass Effect 2 quite the buffer to work with. Potentially I can see Mass Effect 2 pushing 60% in this match.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Mass Effect 2 > Starcraft

charmander6000’s Prediction: Mass Effect 2 wins, 58.93% - 41.07%

You know, GTA has actually had a pretty good contest, all things considered. I guess SA's easy loss to CC here looks pretty whatever but Vice City and V have looked impressive in defeat compared to expectations.

And they actually won all of the matches they were supposed to! Granted, beating Shenmue and Shovel Knight really shouldn't be a big accomplishment but look at how a lot of other big casual western games have done. Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, and Halo have now followed Marcus Fenix's example by completely dropping off the face of the earth. If GTA had plummeted like those other franchises, GTA V losing to Shenmue really might have been a realistic possibility - 20% on TP isn't much if at all worse than some of the ugly beatdowns we saw this contest and Shenmue has almost certainly gotten a bit stronger post-kickstarter.

Yep, you nailed it. These other things are RE4's true strengths. I just find it hard to get past the gunplay as I much prefer run n gun ability. But I acknowledge where it is an actually great game for people who don't care about that sort of thing.

That's incorrect. Several games had the exact same camera angle as RE4 years before it. For example I know for a fact Splinter Cell 1 had the exact same over the shoulder view in aim mode (just compared them on youtube) and while out of aim mode allowed the player to spin the camera in 360 degrees which was far superior to RE4 actually.

You have convinced me to try that game. I only play the first one and hated it... Do you have to play the first 3 in order to enjoy / understand 4?
The Resident Evil storyline is pretty contrived, it wouldn't be hard to just jump in at 4. If you did want to go back to the older games, there's the remake of 1 (and 2 IIRC) available.

No.

Some characters might not make much sense. Well, they sort of make sense you just won't get the connection. It's standalone, but uh not really. I suppose you could say it reboots the series. Into something better, imo.

And I suppose it depends on what you didn't like about 1. The game still maintains tank controls, stand and shoot type stuff, but the camera is much better with the behind the back.
