SFF
makes sense for a character contest, where someone like Vincent might
derive most of his strength from FFVII and lose all that strength when
facing Cloud. But I don't see how it works in a games contest. Voters

No. Is it good? It's good, but definitely different from Earthbound. It's still got all the quirkiness, just a much darker tone. The weight of the conflict really hangs over the game in a way that you never really get in Earthbound --- Blasting off |

It seems like SFF would give the weaker game some constant strength just because it has the franchise tag on it. Therefore when one of the top dogs faces off against another game from the same franchise that's weaker, a lot of voters who would normally go for the weaker game against most other opponents defect to the stronger game that they like more. It's
totally understandable for Ulti to hate Chrono Cross. It's my favorite
game of all time and even I'll admit that the game is a f***ing mess.
Chrono Cross was also very hyped at its release but ended up being a
disappointment because it wasn't a Chrono Trigger sequel, both
gameplay-wise and story-wise. That disappointment and "wtf?" feeling can
linger for a long time. But yea it's great that you're interested in giving the game another chance. You should play Radical Dreamers too, it's only 3-4 hours long I think. Eh, don't really wanna go back to that game. The story remains a downright mess, but I just really am no fan of JRPG gameplay anymore. It's just so dull to me nowadays. --- Ole, ole, ole, ole. Ole! That one ROM hack sequel that some fans made was a better sequel than CC was. You don't need the dream team assembled, just take the original and iterate on it, like any great sequel. The worst sequels are the games that feel the need to make fundamental changes over the original. Rarely do those changes work out (Mass Effect 2 being an exception for public/critical acclaim, although I always have and always will prefer the original). Chrono Cross isn't a 1/10 terrible game on its own. Take the Chrono out of the title and it becomes a mid-tier 5/10 PS1 RPG that's not quite as good as Legend of Dragoon. My biggest beef is the horrible battle system mechanics and lack of character specific techs and traditional leveling. The game is beautiful and the soundtrack is amazing, but the story completely takes a **** on the charming CT story. The other big nitpick I had with the game is that it takes place in a small, previously 'undiscovered' subsection of the main CT world. reason even if I think they are hateful or stupid. Sounds like SJWism if

You see it all the time when drama queens in their late 20s that act like they're in high school still post on Facebook that they need to 'cut out the negativity in their lives'. Undertale's
great. I didn't care too much for Earthbound years ago when I tried
it, yet Undertale makes me want to give it another shot because it's so
good. As I often do lately, if Undertale fans are looking for another similar game, then I recommend LISA (the Painful)...2D status-based indie-RPG that isn't as polished as Undertale but still does some real fascinating things. --- M E N: nominate Metal Man in 20XX! http://i.imgur.com/Dr4NAeq.png |
