I wasn't serious about the match redo, but I think it's something that can technically be done

http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/bge20_rules

"If for any reason the Internet portion of the program is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of CBSI which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest, CBSI reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest. In such event, CBSI further reserves the right to award a prize to the eligible participant with the next highest score in accordance with these Official Rules."

I'm not a lawyer, but my interpretation of that is they can almost do whatever they want in response to downtime.

I really thought after the last contest, the official rules would have been updated to include information about extending or re-running matches in the event of the site being down for a while, but there's nothing in there about that.

It gives the site the power to do so, but doesn't provide any guidelines as to when it would actually be done.

idk though
ROUND 1 – DAY 11 – TOP OF DIVISION 6

Match XLI: (1) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past vs. (16) Cave Story

Previous Performance

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past – 2009
56.24% against Donkey Kong Country, Doom, Streets of Rage II
50.49% against Super Metroid, Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country
38.38% against Final Fantasy VI, Super Metroid, LoZ: Link’s Awakening
23.14% against Final Fantasy VII, Super Mario 64, Final Fantasy VI
23.65% against Final Fantasy VII, Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. 3
11.84% against LoZ: Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X

Cave Story – N/A
N/A

Analysis

This could be quite the blowout. While Cave Story has its fans they are quite few in number, I am actually surprised the game even made the bracket. Ocarina of Time’s performance against Hearthstone is still fresh in our minds and while Link to the Past is nowhere near that strong it is still considered to be the second strongest Zelda game and will likely prove that it still is by the end of the contest.

For the most part Zelda games have looked pretty good so far, but they always tend to do well when it comes to blowing out the opponent. I expect Link to the Past to get into the 80s and possibly get the second highest blowout of the contest.

charmander6000’s Bracket: LoZ: A Link to the Past > Cave Story

charmander6000’s Prediction: LoZ: A Link to the Past wins, 85.26% - 14.74%

Match XLII: (8) Deus Ex vs. (9) Final Fantasy IV

Previous Performance

Deus Ex – 2010
50.76% against Rock Band 2
25.73% against Fallout 3

Final Fantasy IV – 2009
50.65% against Mega Man 3, River City Ransom, Crystalis
23.91% against Super Mario World, Final Fantasy, Mega Man 3
20.57% against Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Sonic 1

Analysis

While we don’t know Final Fantasy IV’s accurate strength due to LFF helping and hurting it in 2009 it should be enough to defeat Deus Ex. The game is worth somewhere between 30-40% against Super Mario World, but even taking the worst case scenario it is still much more impressive than what Deus Ex has ever done.

On a more PC friendly site Deus Ex would have strength, but this is GameFAQs. Expect to see more whining than usual, Deus Ex fans are quite passionate about their game.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Final Fantasy IV > Deus Ex

charmander6000’s Prediction: Final Fantasy IV wins, 68.25% - 31.75%

Match XLIII: (5) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain vs. (12) Perfect Dark

Previous Performance

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – N/A
N/A

Perfect Dark – 2010
63.93% against Conker’s Bad Fur Day
44.57% against Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Analysis

I took Metal Gear Solid V without much thought, but with the performance of recently released games there could be some discussion. Of course if there is one 2015 game that will have strength it would be Metal Gear Solid V, the name alone could push it through this four-pack.

Perfect Dark isn’t exactly a powerhouse, but with the performance of Nintendo 64 titles it may look a bit better relative to its 2010 performance. I don’t expect it to win here, but it will definitely be used as a measuring stick on whether or not Metal Gear Solid V will reach the third round.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Metal Gear Solid V > Perfect Dark

charmander6000’s Prediction: Metal Gear Solid V wins, 64.37% - 35.63%

Match XLIV: (4) Dark Souls vs. (13) Sid Meier’s Civilization V

Previous Performance

Dark Souls – N/A
N/A

Sid Meier’s Civilization V – N/A
N/A

Analysis

Personally I have very low expectations for Dark Souls. Games from its era have been performing poorly and while it could potentially win this four-pack it will be due to the weakness of Metal Gear Solid V and not its strength. I suspect it would be a bit stronger than Demon’s Souls which did okay against Half-Life 2 and will be more than enough to win here.

I was a bit surprised that Civilization fans went with the fifth game, but I guess it is the most recent game of the series. Civilization IV was in the 2010 contest where it lost in the first round to Persona 3. While the series isn’t too popular on GameFAQs I suspect Civilization V will look respectable by the end of this match.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Dark Souls > Civilization V

charmander6000’s Prediction: Dark Souls wins, 62.72% - 37.28%

Dark Souls might turn out to be one of, if not the, strongest game from its era. It definitely has the most dedicated fanbase here on GameFaqs, and it's become the go-to game for 'hardcore' gamers. It's become the poster boy for old-school mentalities pushed through a modern filter. I think Dark Souls is going to surprise a lot of people.

It didn't build up its reputation and visibility until well after release. I think that if we held this poll now, it would beat everything except maybe Skyrim.

Unlike games that proved they're kind of flash-in-the-pan things, like Portal 2, Dark Souls is a game that I think is going to be a lot stronger than when we first saw it in 2012.

so uhhh

if Bacon ever decided to rerun a match what would he do

would it just be 24 hours of Xenoblade/DKC2 alone, redo all four matches, do five matches, or would he just push one game back a day (which would throw a wrench into scheduling)

Well, it was basically FFIX/KH1 all over again for the second half of the match, only like 600 votes closer and with a successful comeback on the game that was losing overnight to start the second half.

Based on GOTD, it would put MGSV at 31.74% on Majora, right on par with San Andreas.

I doubt MGSV stays above 60% if it's barely there during the board vote though.

At first I saw Dark Souls' score and thought, "It's screwed against MGSV". But then I saw the next match. Holy crap, MGSV is weak. Then again, I would expect it to have a bad board vote, so it should go back above 60%. Maybe.

And it turns out the casual bracket makers fell for the Mario name less than Board 8!
