You know that friend you have that has a crush on this girl, and they think she's so totally amazing, and they have this almost stalkerish obsession with her, and they never fail to take a moment to divert the topic to that girl and talk about how totally awesome she is?

Those are Big Boss fans

Never seen that.

MGS2 fans are still way worse. But then I'm a fan too so uh oh.

TBH if I could compare games to movies I'd put MGS2 on the level of The Empire Strikes Back.

Honestly we're only the worst because so many people just do not get what Kojima was going for and it's frustrating to deal with. Imagine putting up with rabid Snake fans for 15 years RAHHH RAIDEN SUCKS!!! Really grating.

I find that completely unreasonable.

If your game's whole point turning hype on its head to make a commentary on something, you can't be mad for vocal complaints. The whole point of the freaking game is to alienate players at some degree to get a point across.

Dude. It's been 15 years and tons of analysis on it. There's no excuse for MGS2 hate to exist anymore except gamers are irrationally insane and entitled. That's why it was such a great topic for Kojima to tackle actually.

It would make sense if it was a niche series. People who either caught the hints or read up on MGS2 are a minority out of the millions that played the game.

I feel like if you have the vision to pull a MGS2 situation, you have made peace with the fact that even down the line, it won't be the most easily appreciated thing.

Do people really not understand that in Any literary medium, the story has to stand on its own? That the only thing that counts is how the reader/viewer/player experiences it themselves? That any "explanation" that comes later, from an outside source, does nothing to invalidate that person's genuine experience of the actual work? At best such an explanation might nuance their view of it, but it will never fundamentally change their entire perception of it.

Actually my perception has changed many times on certain pieces of art after thinking about it. You just have to have an open mind. I remember Citizen Kane kinda bored me and then I came back to it years later and it blew me away because I had a greater understanding of what made it work so well. That's why I told that guy to give it another shot.

Though even if I'll agree that the characters are well-written and compelling on the whole, there's definitely plenty of laughable dialogue to go around. I swear I would have cried during Sniper Wolf's death scene if it was better written!

I gave one example where I came to my own conclusion. I have had many instances where it was someone explaining to me what made that piece of art so great. What is the point of forum discussion after we see a piece of art if not to get a better understanding of it and why it is either good or bad and possibly reconsider it on a second viewing?

Apparently open mindedness is in short supply these days though.

My point is not that you should be close-minded about a work of art, but rather if a significant number of people react negatively to a work and they all need someone else to 'correct' them about how good that work supposedly is, it's a safe bet that there is an intrinsic flaw in that art.

The lack of trends really takes away a lot of the excitement
I picked Mario Maker out of pure fanboyism. That and its competition is kinda weak (DKC2 is a joke, Xenoblade couldn't even win GotY on one of the weakest years we had, and it's kind of hard seeing a Fire Emblem game beating a Mario game even if it's the likely strongest FE game against a weak and vulnerable Mario game).

I think SotN will handily beat whoever gets out of there though. SotN is lucky it has such an easy path since I'm sure it's lost a few steps in recent year.
