Where is all that castlevania hype coming from? I've seem multiple people saying it beats Ocarina. Spoiler: it doesn't. |
SMRPG/Oblivion was quite debatable at the beginning, it's just that everyone went with SMRPG. anyone who took Diablo II to win this, or considered it: could you
explain why? I don't mean that in a snide way or anything, I'm just

I picked without really looking at past results. I thought Diablo is more gamefaqs than goldeneye. ROUND 1 – DAY 8 – BOTTOM OF DIVISION 4 Match XXIX: (3) Super Mario 64 vs. (14) Mario Kart 8 Previous Performance Super Mario 64 – 2009 45.44% against Castlevania: SotN, Resident Evil, Kirby Super Star 40.42% against Chrono Trigger, Castlevania: SotN, SMW2: Yoshi’s Island 22.58% against Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger, GoldenEye 007 22.95% against Final Fantasy VII, LoZ: A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy VI Mario Kart 8 – N/A N/A Analysis There is only one Mario Kart game in this bracket and it gets placed against a mainline Mario game. Like Pokemon, Mario Kart also plays into nostalgia so the earlier ones have decent strength while the newer ones are noticeably weaker. In 2010 Mario Kart Wii finished with 29.14% against Pokemon GSC. You could argue for possible SFF, but MK8 is up against SM64 so that point is moot. Honestly if Super Mario 64 breaks 90% I wouldn’t be surprised, a new blowout record for this contest is probably likely. Even going by natural strength Super Mario 64 should at least be pushing a tripling. Too bad Super Mario Kart or Mario Kart 64 didn’t make the bracket, but it is a type of series that would struggle to avoid split nominations. charmander6000’s Bracket: Super Mario 64 > Mario Kart 8 charmander6000’s Prediction: Super Mario 64 wins, 86.73% - 13.27% Match XXX: (6) Final Fantasy Tactics vs. (11) Resident Evil 2 Previous Performance Final Fantasy Tactics – 2009 22.79% against Metal Gear Solid, Pokemon GSC, Deus Ex Resident Evil 2 – 2009 23.07% against GoldenEye 007, Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country 2 Analysis I feel this match should have gotten more debate in the pre-contest. Both games got similar percent against similarly strength games. I would say Final Fantasy Tactics ended up looking a bit better since Resident Evil 2 was surrounded by Nintendo titles while there is the possibility of console SFF by Metal Gear Solid. The main things I’m betting are that Final Fantasy Tactics was not affected by Metal Gear Solid, something I think to be likely and that Final Fantasy Tactics has continued to age poorly. We’ve already seen the game go from equal to Metal Gear Solid to easily beaten and Ramza has gone from doing well against Kirby to losing to Hogger over a five year period. Match XXXI: (7) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess vs. (10) Skies of Arcadia Previous Performance The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess – 2010 79.38% against Shenmue 68.87% against Dragon Age: Origins 62.27% against Super Mario Galaxy 57.10% against Kingdom Hearts II 47.25% against Super Smash Bros. Brawl Skies of Arcadia – 2010 52.40% against Baldur’s Gate II 37.80% against Mass Effect Analysis It’s a bit weird to group Twilight Princess with the new games since it has been out for almost a decade, but in terms of Nintendo games it is likely the strongest new Nintendo game and that includes Brawl, whom is absent from this bracket. Twilight Princess despite its seed is destined with a showdown against Super Mario 64 in the third round and it’ll need to bring out the big guns if it wants to convince people it has enough strength. Skies of Arcadia has decent strength for a Dreamcast game and it has been released on the Gamecube since then. Twilight Princess should have no problem dealing with it, but the people that think the game could push for 80% isn’t giving the game enough credit. charmander6000’s Bracket: LoZ: Twilight Princess > Skies of Arcadia charmander6000’s Prediction: LoZ: Twilight Princess wins, 73.25% - 26.75% Match XXXII: (2) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 vs. (15) Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors Previous Performance Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 – 2010 63.97% against Braid 50.27% against Dead Rising 29.28% against Resident Evil 4 Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors – N/A N/A Analysis It’s quite amazing to see Persona 4 as a two seed. Given its exposure it’s hard to call the game niche anymore, but that doesn’t mean it has the strength to befit a 2 seed. Too bad the game wasn’t given a more debatable path; you’d have to expect quite the boost for it to have a chance against Twilight Princess. I’m not sure what to expect out of 999. The series was able to get two games into the bracket, albeit as low seeds, but it is a type of series with a small, but vocal fanbase. Although I had Goldeneye winning in my bracket, I changed it in my oracle. MGS4 wasn't a joke in GotD as it is now. 45% on it was damn impressive while Goldeneye never did anything quite like it. I had D2 winning with like 51% lol |

Except most people haven't gone back to play Goldeneye, since it's one of the rare few games that has never gotten a port or remake, so they're looking back at it with rose coloured lenses. I think people make too big of a deal about how games age and how they look now and all of that. I know that a lot of people on Board 8 are super intense gamers who go back and try to play all the old games, but that isn't how most people approach videogames. For example. How many people do you think have actually gone back and played each of Mario 1-->Mario 64 in the last 10 years? How many people have played every 2D Zelda in the last 10 years? How many people have played all the pre-FFX final fantasies in the past 10 years? People don't have the time to play every game in the contest ONCE, no less REPLAYING those games in the past few years. Games that often take 75 hours a piece! As such, in a best game ever contest, a lot of games are going to be voted on legacy, and the dreaded nostalgia. This isn't an awards show where everyone is expected to have seen every best picture nominee in order to vote. |

Witcher 3 has no reason to be a hate magnet, for one. People have been all up in arms about Fallout 4 for reasons of graphics, being the same old thing, and s***ty animations. Skyrim
looks far more respectable than it did after a few hours into this
match. Factor out the rally spillover votes, and Skyrim should be
around 1% higher on PW. When today's matches end, I'll try to do some projections with either the first hour, first 2 hours, or first 4 hours of votes removed and see how it changes the results for all 4 matches.
