Dragon Quest VIII is going up. Never thought it could do this well.
That's two contests in a row where the series did unexpectedly well -
and we probably shouldn't have expected differently. The other three matches seem to have stabilized, though MMX and CT seem to be slowly decreasing. FFX/HL1 just seems to have no real pattern to it, and it's not helping that both those games are night-oriented. --- "Nothing I could do!" -Darksydephil |

am surprised this site doesn't actually like DQ even more. It's as
old-school JRPG as they get. Even recent releases play like JRPGs from

DQ is only popular in Japan. Outside it has always had trouble selling. |
Yeah,
Dragon Quest doesn't carry any nostalgia or impact for most of the
voters here. DQ8 was the first time since maybe the original that people
took notice of DQ again. It sold well and was super well received,
though. Something like DQ8 is totally on its own strengths as a beloved
game, rather than any franchise voting. P3 always seemed like it needed
the help of other, more popular games in its series to carry it further.

Besides
if the DQ franchise impacted the west like it did Japan, DQVIII
probably isn't that much stronger, DQV would be the monster of that

X-stats
using Game of the Decade results, Half-Life/OoT in 2009 (the other
games in that match were FFIX and CC), and assuming CT and FFX finish at
85% at 65% respectively: Ocarina of Time: 50.00% Chrono Trigger: 44.25% Final Fantasy X: 30.43% Half-Life: 21.30% Golden Sun: 20.90% San Andreas: 19.36% Ratchet & Clan: UYA: 13.27% ...Well. here. It seems to have a small, vocal fanbase that will stick with it
over anything. It really is too bad that Persona 4 got wasted against a

Looking
at some of the 24-hour (non-Draven) matches from CBIX, we seemed to
usually be at around 60% of the votals at 11:30 am Eastern. So we should
be on pace for somewhere around 36K for today's matches, which is

Dragon
Quest VIII was a considerably higher profile game than Persona 3 and
based on that I'd say the latter is lucky it's even this close. And
while I've played Persona 3 but not Dragon Quest VIII, the latter looks
massively more visually impressive. I doubt the randomly generated and
repetitive aspect of Tartarus appealed to people here either. Sure,
Persona 3's battle system is fine and its story and characters are good
but that's a very reductive way of looking at RPGs that I don't think
the site necessarily shares. And while I liked the game a lot and all,
it's also got a vastly stronger weeaboo vibe than the JRPGs gamefaqs
generally likes. Persona 3 was successful but pretty niche; and regardless of its good qualities, a lot more people have played and love Persona 4. We'll see how the latter does. I'm not sure why it would reflect badly on gamefaqs that they defied our expectations and refused to blindly franchise vote. I mean, that seems like most of the reason people hiveminded to picking Persona 3 to win here, right? think it's tough to say anything about new vs. old just yet. Arkham
City is not even a notable new game, it's one of those total game of the
month kind of things. No lasting impact at all. Putting it up against a
classic like MMX was a recipe for failure. Gotta see how other games
hold up before saying anything definitive there. I made my bracket based around old games doing better than newer ones, though. These popular new games just aren't typically in GameFAQs's wheelhouse, and with the vote totals being low and the average voter being in their mid-20s, I figured these older games like CT and MMX and Mario would thrive. One of the upsets I thought a lot about but didn't take as MP > Skyrim. Don't think today says anything about that, but it'd be something if it happened! --- satoru iwata |
Also, don't be surprised if P4 is a good bit stronger now but P3 is still weak. I thought P3 would gain some residual benefit from P4's popularity boost, but I guess not. I wouldn't take this match as a referendum on P4's strength. --- http://i.imgur.com/3DwCNLJ.gif |

Yep.
I would expect P4 to be more popular than P3 by a good amount. That was
the breakout Persona game, and the one everyone loves. P3 is for a more
hardcore, niche subsection of those fans. Like, Persona 4 lead to a
dancing game, a fighting game, and maybe the only popular Vita game.
Think it's on a different level, but it runs into Zelda so it's pretty

I think we might have overestimated FFIX's strength a little, making Persona 3 look better in comparison. We assumed that it was getting leeched in 2009 and SFF'd by FFX in 2010, but FFIX has an old school fanbase that doesn't get SFFd by New Square as much, and so the match against FFX might have been a bit more straightforward than we gave it credit for.
