One
thing that I find interesting when doing the BOP is how the board's
opinion is different from the start to the end of the bracket making
process. - Chrono Cross is a big one going from very unlikely winner against WoW to being almost even to win the four-pack - The XC/DKC2/SMM/FE:A four-pack went from a virtual 4-way tie to Xenoblade being the heavy favourite and DKC2 having less than 10% support. - Mass Effect went from forgotten to some support against SMG2 - Monster Hunter 4U went from no support to likely upset - SMRPG is now a heavy favourite over Oblivion where before they were almost even. Likewise in round 2 with GTA5 - SMG is now a heavy favourite over Super Metroid - FFX/CT has gone from strong FFX support to even back to strong FFX support - Wind Waker has gone from almost non-existent to some support against FFVI - SSBM has slowly bled support to FFX/CT - MGS/RE4 has gone from even to heavy MGS support --- Board Odds Project; Post Your Bracket: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/72683134 (edited 11/4/2015 6:23:41 AM)report |
Those
big changes are more indicative of how the board is feeling, since a
bunch of people (myself included) didn't bother to post their bracket

Today's
votals are not instilling confidence in me that we'll get even
half-decent numbers this tournament. And that's comparing to our last

have a feeling we're going to have a lot of really wonky results given
the low vote numbers... stuff we didn't expect at all. Anything can

Allen has posted the following screenshot showing the layout of the 4 polls on the homepage: http://i.imgur.com/71da0ij.png This is a lot better than I was expecting. The polls are displayed horizontally going across the screen, so all of the polls have equal visibility. It looks like the boxes are rectangles that are slightly taller than wide. So for this SMB3 box: http://img.gamefaqs.net/box/8/5/3/14853_front.jpg It should be able to get Mario's whole head, or most of it... Yo, decade-long lurker here of the stats topics. I only keep up during the season, so I'm not up on the lore... Potato is Heroic Mario? Or is HM gone? And MMXcalibur is long gone too or is he someone else now? Tryna think of other names that kinda escape me. Is there a snowflake, snowguy that was prominent? That's all. Love reading your guy's analysis and insight. Looks
like today's poll is on track for about 16000 votes. That's a little
better than I was expecting, since the same poll for the previous
Character Battle got about 30% less votes compared to the average PotD
vote totals of that time period. Today's poll seems like it will only

To be fair, MGS2 and RE4 aren't pushovers, and it's asking a lot for a game released a few months ago to be on the level of established favorites. It's definitely possible, but given what limited info we have for games (leading to bias toward older games that we know to be strong already over the more unpredictable newer games) it's no surprise people don't have Witcher 3 going too far. Western
games are a lot stronger these days, as seen by the performances from
Skyrim, The Last of Us, and Mass Effect 2 in recent GotY polls (and
Modern Warfare 2 and Borderlands 2 to a lesser extent, though those
benefited from s*** competition). I guess it depends on who would you take between LttP and FFX. With that said I would be very surprised if MM pulled off the upset. I'm
really not feeling the MM > LttP hype. MM was equal to Brawl with
bandwagoning, and I would put LttP a step above Brawl*. I don't see
anyone calling for any other SNES games to drop off this contest (except

Mask is one of those games that gets stronger each year. Plus maybe it

don't think creativename can set up the updater so it is ready to go
when the contest starts. We're not even sure what the layout of the
results page will look like, which means he won't know how to retrieve
the vote totals from the results page. We also don't know the exact
URLs for the results page yet. I think some people are probably
expecting the results page to be hosted under the same URL structure
used for the PotD results page. We can't be sure that the first match
of the contest (the Chrono Trigger one) will have a results page hosted

will be ready to track poll updates manually when the contest starts
and probably TRE will do some tracking as well for an additional source
of backup help. As for TRE's First Vote contest, we might end up with a situation in which we cannot identify who got the first vote in the first 4 matches of the contest. The new format this year means that the script I would normally use to vote in a match probably won't work for this contest. When
I started making my bracket, one of my first decisions was that I would
only let myself make one dumbass "panic change" in the final hours,
since I tend to overthink things when the bracket-making period gets
down to the wire. So I decided to take Mass Effect 2 over MGS3 (with MGS1 still winning the division - hedge-betting FTW!). Should be fun to see how that plays out. --- JAK The Character Battle IX people's champ. |

I'm
taking the Majora's Mask upset. Link to the Past is one of the five
oldest games in the bracket and MM is arguably the strongest game to
come out since...well, Ocarina Of Time. It just got the 3DS port too,
and time has been progressively kinder to MM. I'd take LoZ:LttP over FFX, but I wouldn't call that a lock. LoZ:MMs risky since it was once so divisive, but it's impressive how much of that has been overcome.
