yeah I'm sure it'll tell us a lot about the upcoming contest

Well, I like seeing extreme trends in any form, even if the poll isn't relevant to the contests. I didn't track this poll when we had it last year since I assumed the trends would be boring. And they probably would have been boring if it wasn't for Allen including a gap between the "4-12 hours" and "1-7 days" options by forgetting to include the "12-24 hours" option. So I concluded the extreme trends were caused because last year's poll forgot to include the "12-24 hours" option. This poll caught me by surprise last year when it turned out to have extreme trends.

Poll updates and trend charts for yesterday's poll:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19Wn_J5VmJMGmloMT2PG1_tmShofhXX-Jm0tvJaR6CMM/pub?gid=868782136

I also included the poll updates from the 2014 poll, most of which was obtained from the same data GameFAQs uses for their poll graphs. I won't be focusing on the 2014 poll, as I will be discussing the trends of the 2015 poll instead.

The "Paused game" option performed best during the board vote, Power Hour, and SNV. It dropped off a bit during the night vote, but even that time period was above average for it. It hits rock bottom during the early morning vote, which was its worst time period. The late morning vote was slightly better than the early morning vote, but still fairly bad. It does much better during the ASV, where it comes close to making a return to its Power Hour strength. The SNV ended up being similar to its Power Hour. Starting from the 1:00 AM update where it had 18.31%, the "Paused game" option lost a total of 5.62% to reach its lowest percentage of 12.69% at 2:40 PM. After that point in time, it gained a total of 1.44% over the remainder of the poll to finish with its final percentage of 14.13%.

"Less than 1 hour" had a strong board vote and Power Hour. It continued to remain strong during the night vote, but even that doesn't tell the whole story as it started dropping off pretty hard during the final hour of the night vote. It performed worst during the early morning vote and even the late morning vote wasn't much better either. It does much better during the ASV, but even that was a fairly average time period for "Less than 1 hour". The SNV was even better than the ASV, but it fails to regain the same strength it had during the Power Hour. "Less than 1 hour" reached its maximum percentage of 24.66% at 1:05 AM. After that point in time, it lost a total of 8.54% to reach its lowest percentage of 16.12% at 7:05 PM. After reaching its lowest percentage, it only gained a total of 0.39% over the remainder of the poll to finish with a final percentage of 16.51%.

At one point, "Less than 1 hour" had a maximum vote lead of 185 over "4-12 hours" at 1:40 AM before "4-12 hours" started making a comeback. This 185 vote lead was wiped out in less than 3 hours, with the lead change happening at 4:25 AM. "4-12 hours" would then go on to reach a maximum vote lead of 3613 at 7:20 PM before "Less than 1 hour" started stalling out "4-12 hours" for the rest of the poll. "4-12 hours" ultimately finished the poll with a 3580 vote lead over "Less than 1 hour". "Less than 1 hour" also reached a maximum vote lead of 422 over "1-7 days" at 5:00 AM. However, this vote lead took longer to wipe out, with the lead change happening at 10:05 AM. Once this lead was wiped out, "1-7 days" would go on to reach a maximum vote lead of 1122 at 10:35 PM before the 2 options stalled each other out for the remainder of the poll. The final lead for "1-7 days" was 1115 at the end of the poll.

"1-4 hours" had a strong board vote and Power Hour. It dropped somewhat during the night vote, but even that was easily above average for it. It hit rock bottom during the morning vote and had a very terrible morning vote as a whole. It started doing better during the ASV, but even that was a fairly average time period as a whole. It does even better during the SNV, but fails to regain the same strength it had during the Power Hour. Starting from the 1:00 AM update where it had 20.51%, "1-4 hours" lost a total of 9.65% to reach its lowest percentage of 10.86% at 5:45 PM. After that point in time, it gained a total of 0.60% to finish with a final percentage of 11.46%.

"4-12 hours" had the most extreme trends in this poll. It had a really terrible board vote and Power Hour. When the night vote started, it was slowly gaining strength every hour before reaching its maximum strength during the morning vote. Overall, the night vote was fairly average if you look at its performance as a whole. It performed best during the morning vote as a whole, although its best hours were concentrated during the earlier part of the morning vote. It started dropping off during the later part of the morning vote and was slowly losing strength every hour before hitting rock bottom for the last 4 hours of the poll. Overall, it had a terrible ASV and a very terrible SNV that was only slightly better than its Power Hour. Starting from the 1:00 AM update where it had 17.30%, "4-12 hours" gained a total of 18.68% to reach its highest percentage of 35.98% at 1:30 PM. After that point in time, it lost a total of 4.34% over the remainder of the poll to finish with a final percentage of 4.34%

"1-7 days" had a terrible board vote and Power Hour. The night vote was also pretty bad, although it was slightly better than the Power Hour. It performed even better during the morning vote, but even that was a fairly average time period as a whole. It performed best during the ASV before dropping off somewhat during the SNV. The SNV was a fairly average time period for "1-7 days", but it was still much better than its terrible Power Hour. Starting from the 1:00 AM update where it had 14.92%, "1-7 days" gained a total of 6.36% to reach its highest percentage of 21.28% at 10:35 PM. After that point in time, it lost only 0.06% to finish with a final percentage of 21.22%.

"More than a week" had the least noticeable trends in this poll. The Power Hour and night vote was the worst time period for "More than a week". The morning vote was fairly average as a whole, while the ASV and SNV were slightly above average.

Whoops, that second 4.34% should actually say 31.64% instead.

Anyways, I emailed creativename about the nomination form and he responded back to me already. I told him that the first match will begin on November 5th.

Tales games have generally gotten destroyed in hype polls in the past, but today's poll is the first time a Tales game is actually winning the poll. I guess this October is just really weak for video games. In most years, October tends to have a good line-up of games (not as good as November, which is generally the strongest month on average for games).

When the site alert for the nomination form goes up tomorrow, there are 2 possible site alerts that could be used. There is a generic site alert, where the color of the site alert matches the GameFAQs layout color that you are currently using to browse the site. So if you have the default blue color, the generic site alert will also be blue. Then you have the more important site alert, which shows up in yellow no matter what color setting you are currently using.

You can compare the 2 different site alerts by checking these archived pages out:

http://web.archive.org/web/20130704212910/http://www.gamefaqs.com/
http://web.archive.org/web/20130708080357/http://www.gamefaqs.com/

I am expecting just a generic site alert to promote the nomination form. I wouldn't bet on a yellow site alert going up tomorrow.

Here is my random recommended list that I sorta put about 3 minutes into. I'd prolly rank a few games in my personal list above Threads of Fate but I figured the ones I'd recommend (Prolly FFX, Mass Effect 2, or Assassin's Creed 2 are sure things to get in) so I didn't bother.

Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies
Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
Front Mission 3
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec
Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Threads of Fate

When I think about it, I really like the idea of four matches at a time in round 1.

A problem with round 1 in most contests has been the fact that it takes up half of the time span of the total contest (though there are certainly reasons to consider that a good thing). If there are 128 1-on-1 matches, round 1 takes 16 days, round 2 takes 32 days (16 days if two matches are done per day), round 3 takes 16 days, round 4 takes 8 days, etc.... I like the thought of that.

The contest probably won't start earlier than October 19th That gives us 31+30+5 days = 66 days to complete the contest before Christmas. Still not enough time if we wanted to run the contest like the 2010 character battle....

If four matches were done per day in round 1, and two matches per day in round 2, then....
R1 = 16 days, R2 = 16 days, R3 = 16 days, R4 = 8 days, R5 = 4 days, R6 = 2 days, R7 = 1 day.... the contest will be 63 days long. So if the contest was designed this way, and if it needed to finish by December 24th, then the game contest will need to start by October 22nd.

I like the thought of that.

For reference, here is how each round is set up:

Round 1 - 4 matches per day (16 days)
Round 2 - 4 matches per day (8 days)
Round 3 - 2 matches per day (8 days)
Round 4 - 1 match per day (8 days)
Round 5 - 1 match per day (4 days)
Round 6 - 1 match per day (2 days)
Round 7 - 1 match per day (1 day)

However, some of the more serious stats topic posters have shown some concern for reduced vote totals as a result of running multiple matches at the same time. We already suffer from reduced vote totals from the 12-hour format, so even if we get reduced vote totals from running multiple matches at the same time, at least it will be neutralized by the fact all the matches are 24 hours. Although the bigger concern would be that some matches are expected to be hurt more than others, since the matches farther down on the homepage should get less votes than the ones near the top of the page.

We're not sure what kind of layout Allen has in mind for displaying the matches on the homepage and this could be very important in terms of reducing the severity of the vote total reduction from running multiple matches at the same time. Allen should also consider simplifying the voting process by allowing people to vote in multiple matches at the same time with one click of the "Vote" button.

Ah. Darn. I've been so behind on the latest contest news this year. I wish we didn't have to wait that long. So it ends December 22nd, then, if my math was correct.

Because I have a hard time believing we'll have four weeks between the bracket being posted and the contest starting, we'll probably have to wait at least another week for the bracket to be created then? Hopefully there will be some vote-in polls shortly, though. ;)

Assuming nominations close next Friday, we will probably get about 3 to 4 days of Vote-In polls. After that, I would expect the bracket to be revealed on October 13th or 14th. That would give us a solid 3 weeks to fill out a bracket.

I'm not sure how much the legalities mattered here since SB was planning a different contest earlier this summer and this contest next year. Scrapping the worst-character contest and moving this up probably did change some legal paperwork, but it seems from my outsider-POV like that wouldn't be reason enough. I suspect SB planned it like this, or had some other snag along the way.

I'm also not sure why, unless Bacon/the site workers are going on vacation for more than 1-2 weeks post Christmas, the contest wasn't just set up to take a break for Christmas and then resume afterwards instead of being all jammed together like it is. This can't be easier for Bacon.

I was thinking the same thing, since with the weird new formatting a glitch might be more likely, and with possibly low votals due to all the matches going on at once, an otherwise minor event might have more of an effect. He does have some built in failsafes, since I believe the contest is set to end on the 21st, so the 22nd and 23rd can be used if necessary.
