You know, given how well the "Under 9" option has hung on over the years, I'd say most of those are clearly either troll votes or "DAT TOP OPTION."
---
[NO BARKLEY NO PEACE]
[NO raytan NO PEACE]
Hmm, the "Under 9" option has gotten between 0.75% and 0.87% in every age poll since 2012, so it seems possible that most of them are troll votes.

The dramatic loss of ASV power the last several years is connected to the same reasons why our vote totals have also declined. I am willing to bet there are more younger people visiting GameFAQs than today's poll actually suggests. It has been stated in the past that vote totals have declined because of a very large increase in new visitors coming to GameFAQs from a Google search result and bypassing the homepage completely. This group of people contains a lot of younger people that aren't being represented in the recent age polls, so what were left with is an aging group of people that are the primary voters in the daily polls.

Yesterday's poll results are very misleading because of what was said above. As a result, the younger age demographics are actually under represented in the polls and thus a loss in ASV power. Once Allen makes a serious effort to boost vote totals, this should lure in younger people to the community and the ASV should make a comeback again.

It would take up advertising space

Congrats to raytan for winning the Guru Contest
I do think the poll should be located on every page of the site (minus the FAQ pages) to get vote totals up, but Allen doesn't want to do that because it would take away one of the few reasons to visit the homepage if you could find the poll on nearly every page of the site. Allen thinks it also a little spammy to just shove the poll in everyone's faces by having it located on nearly every page of the site. And that's on top of what charmander said already, although I'm sure it would be possible to place the poll below any advertisements that show up in the column on the far right side of the page. This is definitely the case with the poll on the main boards page, where they placed it below an advertisement instead of putting it above.

Although Super Mario 64 does have a remake, it's a remake that was put onto a portable system. I get the feeling this poll is focusing more on games that would be possible candidates for a full HD remake. And I'm sure some people would like to have a full HD remake of Super Mario 64.

The homepage is still the most visited page on the whole site according to Allen. People are just not voting. I don't think putting the poll on every page is a good idea...people will get even more sick/tired of it and become less likely to vote.

Allen has to get a bit more creative and not just spam the poll everywhere. Maybe award some sort of thing for voting...like maybe Karma? or show on user's profiles how many polls they voted in...statistics and numbers usually get people more involved/interested

This is definitely an opportunity for someone to really get tough on Allen about his lack of effort in boosting vote totals. I have already filled out the feedback form with a message where I get tough on Allen. This is the message I just sent earlier:

Near the end of the last Character Battle, you were on record as acknowledging that poll vote totals have declined very significantly over the past several years and planned to address this in the near future to bring these numbers back up again. Nearly 2 years later, I have not seen any serious effort on your part to address this. Addressing this issue nearly (or more) than 2 years after you stated this does not qualify as "near future" anymore. The extremely low vote totals in the PotD (and by extension, the contests too) is a very controversial issue over at Board 8, because it allows for outside forces to have more power during the contests since they don't need as many votes to change the overall winner of a poll. When are you finally going to address this issue, and do you have any ideas in mind that would at least boost the voting totals during the upcoming BGE contest?

Board 8 still buttdevastated over Draven.

Actually, it might not even be a typo. The use of "Kickstarted" instead of "Kickstarter" could imply that all of the games in this poll have met their funding goals, rather than games that haven't reached their goal yet.

This was Allen's response to my first question:

SBAllen posted...
People simply aren't interested in voting, and there isn't anything we can do about that particular problem. We added a link to get right to the poll on the mobile home page. Then we put the poll on the boards hub. Then we even put the poll question at the top of the mobile home page. Nothing is really working, but you can't honestly say we haven't tried anything. If you look at today's poll, over 40% of the responders say they are here just to vote in the poll. There's just a select subset of users that care, and there's not much incentive outside of possibly gamifying it that we can do to get that interest built up.

Here was another question along with Allen's response:

-LusterSoldier- posted...
During the last Character Battle, the final 4 matches of the contest (minus the bonus polls) all had a site alert notifying users and visitors to go vote in the current match. As a quick reminder, the site alert looked like this - http://web.archive.org/web/20130915130253/http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/5266

Would you be in favor of having a site alert for every single match in the upcoming BGE contest, or would that be overkill in your opinion? It would be one of the few ways to boost voting totals in the contest. I would be in favor of at least expanding the site alert to include more matches, even if you decide not to run a site alert for every single match in the contest.

SBAllen posted...
That would be overkill. We want people to enjoy the contest, but only if they really want to. We aren't going to force it down their throats.

In the future, I will make a suggestion to Allen to use the site alert on all of the 24-hour matches during the contest, if the next contest will have a mix of 12-hour and 24-hour matches. The 24-hour matches should represent only a small fraction of the total matches during the contest.

yeah it doesn't seem there is much he can do. He said it clearly, people are not interested in the poll. He won't annoy and possibly lose users by shoving the PoTD down their throats. We just have to deal with it.

Also, he said the next contest will coincide with the site's anniversary in November.

"Are you responsible for the budgeting/financial side of things? if you are, what do you think of the yearly contests GameFAQs run? do you find them unnecessary and a waste of money?" - Abdou

No, that’s not a leading question...hehe. I am indeed responsible for getting the budget approved for the contests, and while they may be “unnecessary”, they also generate a lot of excitement and engagement in the community which is a good thing. We’re all gamers here, and if we can provide a little entertainment for you guys, I’m all for it. If some people think it’s a waste of time for them, they’re welcome to not participate. We’ve done these contests several times already, so running another contest of the same format is not terribly expensive for us.

That's good to hear. Basically Contests will always happen as long as we and SBAllen want them, the 'higher ups' will keep approving them.
---

In the grand scheme how expensive are contests? Sure we have prizes, but what about the behind the scenes (lawyer approval, programming, investigating cheating etc.)

Given the parent company, I don't think it will put a huge dent into their profits.

The contest isn't going to be announced in November. We will probably end up getting a contest announcement in late August or early September. Keep in mind that this contest will run for about 65 days (the standard length for a full contest) and SBAllen won't allow the contest to overlap with the Christmas break, so that means the first match of the contest will be sometime in October.

---

-Darksydephil
GOTD was announced on September 1st 2010 and started October 20th 2010.

it would be great if the upcoming contest starts in October, but Allen did say the contest will somehow be connected to GameFAQs 20th anniversary in one 'mega' event. That's why I assumed it will be announced during November. But Luster made a valid point in that Allen won't let the contest overlap with the Christmas break. We will see I guess.

Being connected to the GameFAQs 20th anniversary for a mega event shouldn't be interpreted as "the contest gets announced in November" or "the first match starts on the 20th anniversary".

Rather, what I am expecting is the GameFAQs 20th anniversary will be used as a way to promote the upcoming contest. I do expect there will be a contest match on the day of the 20th anniversary.

assuming the contest is 65 days...it would have to start on September 15 for the final match to be on November 20. But we don't know the format, 12-hour matches, extra/bonus matches etc so this is not 100% accurate

Contest starting sometime in September does seems like a good guess at the moment.

For the first match to start in September, the nomination phase would have to start before the end of this month. Usually there's about 2 weeks for nominations and another 2 weeks to fill out an entry.

Most contest announcements tend to be in the afternoon on the west coast and a games contest doesn't require anything fancy with the nomination form so SBAllen doesn't need to monitor it to add new entrants. If I remember correctly contests tend to be announced later into the week (Wed-Fri).

I was debating between this week or next week. I guess I was being more hopeful.
