I like this idea, because it not only gives us old people power but it may convince some of the people brought around by rallies to stick around for other polls (knowing they get more power for other things they like)

I don't really care what's IN the contest, I just want it to be 1v1.

oh well. I mean the contest has to end before E3 right? since Allen likes to run the E3-related polls and all, so it makes sense for them to start the contest late March or early April.

I don't think this is going to do a whole lot in the first place. From a mathematical standpoint, it won't boost vote totals that much. Right now, we're averaging about 23000 votes on non-contest polls. That average would probably increase to 30000 votes for a full 24-hour contest match. Allen has already stated that registered users only make up about one third of the total votes. So out of 30000 votes, we have 10000 from registered users. This means if you make votes from registered users count twice, you're only boosting the total votes from 30000 to 40000, which is still lower than the vote totals we were averaging during the last contest (roughly 50000 votes in 24 hours). And even if votes from registered users were counted three times, that still only boosts vote totals up to 50000.

GOTD is the closest thing to a non-gimmick contest under Allen's watch. There are the 12-hour matches, which you could call a gimmick, but it is something that received more positive reviews than negative ones. Although with the super low vote totals, it does call into question whether 12-hour matches should stay around or get rid of them to get higher vote totals per match.

Eh, the quote contest is the only one that qualifies as a gimmick, I'd say. Just doing a specialized contest doesn't count as a gimmick because he didn't change the format. In fact, Ceej handled those things correctly by making them mini-contests instead of full blown contests like the utter disaster that was Rivalry Rumble. Plus, we still got proper contests within the same calendar year.

Rivalry Rumble was somewhere between a mini-contest and a full blown contest in terms of contest length. Thanks to the 12-hour matches in round 1, the contest was only 48 days long instead of 64 days. That puts it near the middle of a standard mini-contest (31 days, or 32 with a bonus match) and a normal contest (63/64 days).

Well, Snake coming on strong at the end of 2008 messed things up a little bit because almost certainly everything extra Snake gained came at Cloud's expense.

Of course, MGS games aren't quite "weak" per se, but yeah.

Could have been MGSV hype covering everything up. Or perhaps Snake is weaker and Link declined even more, who knows?

Actually yeah, rank the Noble Nine based on perceived contest strength! Here goes nothing:

Link > Snake > Mario > Samus > Mega Man > Cloud > Sephiroth > Sonic > Crono

Tempted to take a Samus > Mario upset. You guys think Samus would have been victimized in Round 2 if she was in Mario's place?

(lol Ganondorf leeched Mario enough to make him lose to Vivi, but couldn't leech Samus enough to make her lose to Vincent. So much for Samus being vulnerable to S/LFF am i rite guys?)

Mega Man > Samus isn't completely implausible if you think Samus has continued to decline. However, Samus never looked to have lost a step last contest outside of allowing an FFVII character to get 44% on her in a year where they all dropped the ball bigtime (then what does this say about Kirby?), and considering how well she did in '02 I wouldn't be surprised if Samus is simply a character who does not age somehow.

I'm also going to assume that Mega Man 2013 = Mega Man 2010, with the SSB4 announcement making up for Mega Man not having gotten anything since 2010 (perhaps all of the Mega Man cancellations actually BOOSTED him because there's no such thing as bad publicity?). Also in fairness Samus has gotten more (or at least equal) amounts of exposure since 2010 as Mega Man.

If anything I'd be prepared to jump on a Samus > Mario upset, though perhaps mostly just to support my favorite VG character.

I don't see Samus having the appeal to get a rally over Mario, which is the only way I see her beating him. I mean, I think it's possible, but I don't think it's likely. I think Samus is a pretty solid fourth at this point.

So how strong would Vivi be in the next character contest? Obviously won't have the crazy rally he did last time (probably), but would you expect him to beat Squall in a 1v1?

For all we know Mario gets anti-voted nowadays due to the series being whored out like no one's business. Although Mario's probably stronger now than he was in 2013 since Nintendo has improved its position since then, back then he would have been more of a target than he is now since we've FINALLY went a year without a new Mario platformer, for the first time since...2008.
