So, no new contest for six months, eh... Have fun with this topic until then, Luster!

94% of voters have owned a Nintendo portable system at one point. I thought there were more gamers that never bothered with any handheld systems. Granted, most PotD voters have been around for many years, and I supposed the poll will naturally attract handheld gamers, anyway....

That is a bit surprising since the last time we ever got a read on what percentage of this site does not play games on portable systems, about 19% of the site does not play portable systems. However, that was back in 2008 during the height of our vote totals and our site demographics are much different today because of the declining vote totals.

2892 votes after the first hour in today's poll, which means today's poll is on track to finish between 28000 and 31000 votes. But still, those vote totals are very good so far. This poll could possibly become only the second poll this year to break 30000 votes.

I don't think we will ever reach 30k anymore. I wonder just how bad the votals will be during the upcoming BGE contest? especially for 12 hours matches...even a small rally on 4chan will be able to change the outcome of a match.

We've had only one poll this year to reach 30000 votes, which was this poll:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/5794-

As far as other polls that could break 30000 votes, the age poll will have no trouble with that task. The continent poll and the Male/Female poll also have the potential to break 30000 votes, but even that is pretty sketchy at this point now.

There isn't anyway to compare "Yes..:(" to modern day Link in that poll. Although the vote totals were quite impressive as a result of Yahoo linking to that poll.

Based on some posts from other people, it is almost certain that Yahoo did not manually add his topic to their site. It is almost likely that Yahoo picked that topic for a news headline because it was automatically fetched due to their algorithm for choosing this stuff. Full Throttle's topic must have been worded in a way that caused Yahoo's algorithm to think it is a news article.

Now if GameFAQs ever adds full support for voting in the PotD directly from the results page, I can't wait to see what happens when Yahoo (or another high traffic site) retrieves the PotD results page and uses it as a news headline.

These vote totals are extremely bad. Today's poll has 1588 votes at the end of the first hour, which means we could end up with less than 16000 votes today. This poll should finish between 15000 and 18000 votes.

The extremely bad vote totals today can be explained by roughly 35% of the site never owning a Sega system, according to this poll:

Poll updates and trend charts for the favorite Sega franchise poll:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdENlR2xnNWJ1NVA3MGVTaDM1bk9sQVE&gid=1

I will be covering the trends for each option in order from the most popular franchise to the least popular (in the final results).

Sonic the Hedgehog had a strong board vote and good Power Hour. It dropped off slightly during the night vote, but even that time period was fairly average overall. It performed worst during the early morning vote, which is a bit of a surprise considering how strong it performs in Europe. Although, to make up for a weak early morning vote, it does end up having an above average late morning vote. The day vote and SNV were slightly below average.

Phantasy Star had a slightly above average Power Hour and an average night vote. It performed worst during the morning vote, but had a good day vote and SNV.

Shenmue is an odd one here. It had a godawful board vote and Power Hour. Compared to the Power Hour, it did perform better during the night vote, but even the night vote was below average. It performed best during the early morning vote. But then, it drops off during the early afternoon hours (roughly equal to its night vote) before performing better during the late evening hours again.

Shining Force was fairly consistent through the entire poll. None of its trends stand out in any way.

Yakuza had a terrible board vote and slightly below average Power Hour. It performed best during the night vote. The morning vote was fairly average overall, while it had a below average day vote and SNV.

Total War, Crazy Taxi, Virtua Fighter, and Panzer Dragoon all had pretty consistent trends throughout the entire poll (ignoring the board vote, though).

Football Manager had a very bad board vote and Power Hour. When the night vote started, it slowly gained strength as the night vote dragged on. Overall, it performed best during the night vote and early morning vote. After the early morning vote wore off, it went back to performing at an average or slightly below average level for the rest of the poll.

Poll updates and trend charts for the favorite Sega console poll:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdEwzNXc1VnVZRlRtU2t4TG8zbXZTbnc&gid=1

Dreamcast had a good board vote and Power Hour. It continued to remain strong during the night vote, at least until reaching the final hour of the night vote. During the final hour of the night vote, there was a pretty sharp dropoff that remained somewhat consistent for roughly 4 hours. I guess this dropoff was caused by the UK, where the Dreamcast performed somewhat poorly in. The Dreamcast's performance in the UK was a bit surprising, since Sega has been very strong in that country (which also explains their love for Sonic too). After the early morning vote wore off, the Dreamcast starts performing better during the late morning vote and day vote, but not at the same level it had during the night vote. Finally, the Dreamcast performs very well during the SNV, although slightly weaker compared to the Power Hour.

Game Gear had a weak board vote and Power Hour. Other than that, it was pretty consistent for the rest of the poll.

Genesis had an average board vote, but dropped off afterwards to finish with a bad Power Hour. Genesis performs slightly better during the night vote when compared to the Power Hour, but even the night vote was bad here. Genesis performs best during the early morning vote. It drops off a bit during the late morning vote and day vote, but even those time periods were above average. The SNV was below average here.

Master System had a terrible board vote and bad board vote. It had a fairly average night vote. It performed best during the early morning vote. The late morning vote and day vote were slightly below average. Finally, it performed worst during the SNV.

SG-1000 performed so bad in this poll that there isn't really anything that can be discussed because of the extremely low percentages.

Saturn had an above average Power Hour, night vote and early morning vote. The late morning vote, day vote, and SNV were below average. It had the least noticeable trends out of Sega's major consoles.

So we're getting a poll today that has a much different set of options compared to the same poll we had back in 2013. This time around, the "all of the above" option is putting up an even more extreme performance compared to the same poll we had back in 2013. There's also no "contest match" option in today's poll, which was an option in the 2013 poll.

In the case of a "Best Game Ever" contest, those contest matches would fall under the option for "Polls about specific games" since a "Best Game Ever" contest focuses on specific games. However, the Character Battles don't fall under any specific option in this poll.

Today's poll currently has 1803 votes at the end of the first hour, which would put it on track to finish between 17000 and 20000 votes. The same poll that we had back in 2013 would translate to 19130 votes with our current vote totals right now and today's poll will probably finish around that mark. Based on this, it does not appear that the lack of a "contest match" option is affecting vote totals to any noticeable extent here.

After seeing the vote totals for yesterday's poll, I would have to reconsider my earlier statement about the lack of a "contest match" option affecting vote totals. The 2013 version of yesterday's poll is estimated to get 19130 votes with our current vote totals right now. The "contest match" option in the 2013 poll got 8.33%. 8.33% of 19130 votes would be an estimated 1594 votes if yesterday's poll had the exact same options as the 2013 poll. By subtracting 1594 votes from the estimated 19130 votes that the 2013 poll was projected to get and you end up with 17536 votes instead. This is almost in line with the 17704 votes that we actually saw in yesterday's poll.

Based on these calculations, yesterday's poll got less votes than expected because there was no "contest match" option.

Poll updates and trend charts for yesterday's poll:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdGVZNmhjaXBQNHEtSHVEaUp2dEpiU1E&gid=1

Apple had a very weak board vote, but managed to finish the Power Hour looking fairly average. The night vote was slightly below average. It performed best during the early morning vote and the SNV, while the late morning vote and ASV were fairly average.

Google performed worst during the board vote, Power Hour, and early morning vote. It performed best during the ASV and SNV, while having an average night vote and late morning vote.

Microsoft had a very bad board vote. After the board vote ended, Microsoft becomes progressively stronger as the poll goes on, with its best time period being the SNV. Also, I find it very strange that Microsoft actually performed even worse in this poll compared to the same poll in 2013. The 2013 poll happened during the immediate aftermath of Microsoft's embarrassing Xbox One reveal and it would make sense for Microsoft to look awful in that 2013 poll. And yet, despite Microsoft changing bad policies (getting rid of the "Always Online" DRM on Xbox One and offering a Kinect-free Xbox One option), Microsoft actually performed worse in yesterday's poll compared to the 2013 poll. This doesn't make any sense and there's really nothing that can explain this result.

Nintendo had an extremely powerful board vote, as it ended up losing 5.12% on the second update of the poll and another 2.35% on the third update of the poll. By the end of the Power Hour, Nintendo lost a total 8.87% off its board vote percentage. Overall, Nintendo's best time period was the Power Hour, even if that was clearly a step below what it had during the board vote. Nintendo's strong Power Hour would carry over to the first 2 hours of the night vote, in which Nintendo would ultimately end up having a slightly below average night vote. Nintendo reached a maximum lead of 181 over Sony at 1:45 AM. After that point in time, Sony would start making a comeback attempt. Sony was stalling out Nintendo from 2:00 AM to 3:30 AM before it finally started making a serious push at pulling off a comeback.

At 7:45 AM, Sony finally took the lead over Nintendo and began to build up a lead of its own. Sony quickly built up a 52 vote lead by 8:15 AM. It was after 8:15 AM that Nintendo decided it wasn't going down without a fight and Nintendo tried to push back hard against Sony. Nintendo fought back against Sony and managed to reclaim the lead at 9:25 AM and held the lead for 2 more updates before Sony would retake the lead at 9:40 AM and never look back again. Overall, Nintendo had a below average morning vote as a whole, although Nintendo showed some signs of having a good morning vote when it made that push to fight off Sony. Nintendo would go on to have a slightly above average ASV, although it performed worst during the SNV (and even the SNV is misleading). Sony reached a maximum lead of 256 on Nintendo at 10:45 PM when Nintendo made one last comeback push and cut 33 votes off that lead to get Sony down to 223. Nintendo's trends in this poll showed that modern day Nintendo is basically all Power Hour and nothing else. If this poll happened back in 2008, Nintendo would have had a much better ASV. The ASV is much weaker today and that clearly shows up here when Nintendo was just barely above average with the ASV.

Sony had trends that were almost the exact opposite of Nintendo here. It had a terrible board vote and bad Power Hour. The night vote was fairly average as a whole, while it performed best during the morning vote. Sony dropped off during the ASV, which was also a fairly average time period for it. Finally, Sony had a bad SNV, although it wasn't quite as bad as its Power Hour.

"None of the above" had the most consistent trends overall, minus the ASV which seems out of place compared to what it was doing during the other time periods in this poll.
