Serious post now though, did you compare the votal trends to those of the past several years for the time period? Maybe votals usually drop a lot more at this time of year due to the holidays keeping people busier with family/work/finals and thus playing less games and visiting the site less. Shouldn't be too hard to sum up the votals for the last couple years and compare the trends to this year's.

Common sense would suggest vote totals should in theory be higher around this time of the year. But no, I didn't compare that to previous years. Another thing that really complicates the issue of calculating this would be that contests are also common around this time of the year. The years 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2011 all had a contest go into November (or start in November for the 2011 contest).

abdou posted...
just how much worse will votals get? 15k? 10k? 5k?

this is unacceptable.

At some point, I think the vote totals will have to stop falling. I don't know what magic number that will be. I originally thought the vote totals hit rock bottom right before the start of the 2013 contest when we had 12 straight months of vote totals hovering around 40000 votes. Then after the contest ended, we found average vote totals had dropped to roughly 35000 votes during the first 30 days after the last match of the contest. And then the vote totals continued to drop even farther over the next 12 months.

For vote totals to drop after this poll change came into effect is a bad thing when we're right on the heels of the 2014 GotY polls. We already have one non-GotY poll get under 18000 votes recently, so I can't imagine what the actual GotY polls will get. Best Mobile Game will definitely get under 10000 votes, and the Vita poll is almost likely to suffer the same fate.

Today's poll will also be tracked to see if there are any interesting trends with this one. Anyways, the poll updates and trend charts for yesterday's poll:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdGlkRW9zdEs4NlNmdnBMNzBNMVdEc0E&gid=1

"Yes, a real full-size tree" had a slightly above average board vote and Power Hour. It drops off during the night vote, where it performs the worst out of all the time periods. It also has a bad early morning vote, but ends up doing better during the later part of the morning vote. It performs best with the ASV and SNV.

"Yes, a fake full-sized one" has a bad board vote and slightly below average Power Hour. It performs worst during the night vote. It has a below average early morning vote. It continues to perform even better as we get through the morning vote, before performing best during the ASV and SNV. This option has a better morning vote compared to "Yes, a real full-size tree". This option reached its lowest percentage of 27.69% at 6:00 AM and then gained a total of 2.78% for the rest of this poll.

"Yes, one or more smaller ones" has the most consistent trends throughout this poll. Nothing much to see here.

"Not yet, we'll have one up" has a bad board vote and below average Power Hour. It performs best during the night vote and morning vote for some reason. Perhaps this poll reminded a lot of voters to get working on setting up their tree, because this option would drop off during the ASV and perform terribly during the SNV.

"No, we still celebrate Christmas" had a good board vote, Power Hour, and night vote. Once it dropped off during the morning vote, it remained pretty consistent for the rest of the poll.

"No, we don't celebrate Christmas" performed best during the night vote and early morning vote, which is the prime voting period for Asia. Asia as a whole is probably the only continent with a significant number of people that don't celebrate Christmas and the trends pretty much show up as a little blip on the radar here. This clearly shows that you need Europe to have sharp changes in trends during the night vote, as Asia alone can do very little to the overall trend. Besides the night vote and early morning vote, all of the other time periods are slightly below average.

FFVII actually went down on the first update after the freeze. FFVIII also went down, but just barely.

FFVII went up again on the second update after the freeze.

But anyways, FFVII going down on the first update after the freeze is not unusual. It has happened 3 times in the past where the FFVII related option lost percentage on the next update after the freeze, as you can see here:

3080 votes at the end of the first hour. That puts this poll on track to finish between 30000 and 33000 votes. But this poll is definitely breaking 30000 votes and this is happening during a time when we're averaging about 22500 votes per day.

Assuming we still had 2008 level vote totals, this poll would be breaking 120000 votes and give the age poll a run for its money as for which poll is king of the vote totals.

So guys, remember "Dissidia boost"? It was a myth. The FFIV, FFVI, and FFIX characters got stronger because their games got stronger.

This poll also strongly supports that Squall/Vivi last year wasn't a total fluke. Although in a one-on-one without Vivi's bandwagon, maybe Squall wouldn't have outright lost.

I'm tempted to even take what the Missingno. matches imply about the relative strengths of Squall and Tidus nowadays somewhat seriously. Spot Squall 5% for Squall/Missingno. happening right after Vivi's win and therefore having an elevated 4chan presence (I also recall someone making threads on 4chan telling people to vote for Squall in an obvious stealth-rally for Missingno.), Missingno. not being transitive, and possible Banjo LFF in Tidus/Missingno and you get Squall at around 57.5% on Tidus.

For reference, Sub-Zero got 53.86% on Tidus in 2010.

Previous favorite FF polls that I managed to dig up:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/576-
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/762-
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/1443-

I would say this poll likely doesn't mean anything as far as FFVII being able to SFF the other games in a direct match. In the previous favorite FF game polls, FFVII performed much better in those polls compared to what we are seeing in today's poll. Some of that could be blamed on FFVII getting weaker, which is something that we have seen in some of our more recent contests.

Also, polls like this probably ends up diluting the SFF a little bit, I suppose.

It was a boost in that it gave new, good-looking art for contest pics for characters that really needed it, like Kefka.

Pleasantly surprised FF9's in the top 5 for this poll. Was hoping FF5 would be higher, but hey, it's beating FF13, I'll take it.

It's been over a month actually. Last poll to break 30000:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/5691-

Of course, vote totals have dropped pretty hard since that poll happened. When we're currently averaging about 22500 votes, you need to have a poll get at least 33.33% higher vote totals (compared to the average) just to break 30000 votes. That's almost getting into age poll territory, although the age poll gets around 40% higher vote totals compared to our average vote totals right now.

Difficult to say because this poll started 10 minutes late due to a poll glitch. Under normal situations, 1890 votes at the end of the first hour would translate to 18000 to 21000 votes. This poll is 100% guaranteed to break 20000 votes. I would probably say somewhere between 22000 and 26000 votes.
