Hello all. I haven't posted in here for a long time, though it's probably less time than it feels like. Link/Draven/Shepard was on my last birthday after all. I don't really have anything to say. In years past I always said a lot of Luster's analyses were interesting but truthfully I'm not that interested, at least now. Even if we could go back to the halcyon days of soda polls and age polls they are less interesting without contest polls to tie them to.

Tomorrow's poll (in less than 20 minutes from now):

Have you ever played the original Legend of Zelda?

This will be quite an interesting poll (not for the trends though), because we haven't had a playrate poll for the original Zelda since 2007.

Not necessarily. Zelda 1 probably got a poll today because it's the 27th anniversary of its U.S. release. And we had a playrate poll for the original FF as recently as December 18, 2012, for the 25th anniversary of its Japanese release.

FF1's playrate there was marginally better (by less than 1%) than it had been in 2006/2007. In comparison, Zelda 1's playrate will probably end up a bit under 2% worse than it had been in 2006/2007.

Trend charts and poll updates for yesterday's poll:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdGx2SWd4bkdxbWVFeDl6ckVUdHRKVlE&gid=2

I also included the poll updates from the 3/26/2010 poll, although I never tracked poll updates for the 3/3/2011 or the 6/18/2012 polls. When discussing the trends, I will be focusing mostly on the trends in yesterday's poll.

"Downloaded it" performed worst during the board vote and Power Hour. It also had a bad SNV as well. Outside of the Power Hour and SNV, it was fairly consistent for most of the poll. "Boxed game" performed best during the night vote and early morning vote, but it performed below average outside of the night vote and early morning vote.

"A game store" performed best during the board vote and Power Hour. It dropped off during the night vote and performed worst during the night vote and the entire morning vote (until the ASV kicks in). While it wasn't as good as the Power Hour, "A game store" also performed well during the ASV and SNV. Compared to the 2010 poll, the trends for "A game store" were less extreme in yesterday's poll.

The main reason for "A game store" performing badly with the night vote is because of the wording used for the poll option. The poll option lists "GameStop" as an example of a game store, but the option was worded in such a way that makes a lot of voters assume that this option applies only to GameStop and no other game stores. And since GameStop is mostly a US thing, this option was going to perform badly with the night vote. GameStop does exist in several other countries outside the US, such as Spain, Italy, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Ireland. But for the most part, it's a US thing and whatever countries GameStop does exist in outside of the US is not enough to have a significant impact on the trends during the night vote.

"Electronics store" performs best during the board vote, Power Hour, late morning vote, and the SNV. It performs worst during the night vote and early morning vote. "Department store" has the most balanced trends in this poll, though it performs best during the board vote and SNV, but worst during the night vote and late morning vote. "Other" performs horribly in the board vote and Power Hour. It does best during the night vote and late morning vote.

1 hour into this poll and "A laptop computer" has a 6 vote lead on "A desktop/tower computer". This is shaping up to be a very good showdown between these 2 options. I believe there will be some noticeable trends in this poll.

I am predicting that "A desktop/tower computer" will have a good morning vote as people are more likely to vote from a desktop computer if they are voting from a computer at their workplace. However, "A mobile phone" could also be expected to have a good morning vote from people voting while at work.

This poll also finished the first hour with 3021 votes, putting it on track to finish between 29000 and 32000 votes.

Welp, this poll has just spiraled out of control over the past 20 minutes since the Power Hour ended. "A laptop computer" had a 6 vote lead on "A desktop/tower computer" at the end of the Power Hour. 20 minutes later, "A desktop/tower computer" now has an 88 vote lead on "A laptop computer". Looking at the updates, that was caused by "A laptop computer" falling off a cliff in terms of vote intake, while "A desktop/tower computer" continues to maintain a rather stable vote intake.

Trend charts and poll updates for yesterday's poll:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdExSWXdObW9UOUF4cWlMdU4yczh3bHc&gid=1

I'll start by talking about "A laptop computer" first, because it had more interesting trends (compared to "A desktop computer").

"A laptop computer" started out with a very good board vote and Power Hour. But the most surprising thing was what happened immediately after the Power Hour came to a close. With the flip of a switch, "A laptop computer" began to collapse as soon as the Power Hour ended. "A laptop computer" had a 6 vote lead on "A desktop computer" at the end of the Power Hour. At the end of the second hour, "A laptop computer" found itself behind "A desktop computer" by 161 votes and it just continued to go downhill for the rest of the night vote.

"A laptop computer" had a bad night vote, but it performed worst during the final hour of the night vote, in addition to having a bad early morning vote. "A laptop computer" was bleeding percentage for the entire night vote (it lost a total of 3.78% during the night vote) and continued to bleed percentage until 9:00 AM (its lowest percentage of 37.59%). After 9:00 AM, it went through a 3 hour period where its percentage was all over the place (quickly gaining 0.20% before falling back down to 37.59% over a 2 hour period). After 12:00 PM, "A laptop computer" finally started to put together an actual trend of gaining percentage. During the 4 1/2 hours after 12:00 PM, it managed to gain 0.49% to reach 38.08% before experiencing more difficulty in gaining percentage. It wasn't until after 9:30 PM that "A laptop computer" started to gain more percentage again, which would continue for the last 2 1/2 hours of the poll.

After the horrible early morning vote, "A laptop computer" had a very average late morning vote and ASV, but it did manage to do slightly better near the end of the poll. The Power Hour was the only hour during the entire poll that "A laptop computer" managed to win over "A desktop computer". Looking at just the US trends, it seems like the bad night vote was mostly caused by the non-US countries. It took until 4:10 AM for "A laptop computer" to fall below 41% in the US (at this time, the worldwide percentage was 39.66%). Where as the percentage bleeding in the morning vote was more of a US thing.

"A desktop computer" had the opposite trends compared to "A laptop computer". It had a bad board vote and Power Hour. Out of the 24 hours in this poll, the Power Hour was the absolute worst hour for "A desktop computer", with the 9:00-10:00 PM hour being the second worst hour. Once the Power Hour ended, it began to perform much better during the night vote.

It performed best during the morning vote, but even the morning vote wasn't as strong as I was expecting. I assumed most workplace computers would be desktops, so that's why I assumed "A desktop computer" would have a good morning vote for that reason alone. Based on what I saw from the morning vote, that theory turned out to be incorrect. Of course, that requires enough voters to be voting from a computer at their workplace during the morning vote to create a noticeable trend during this time period.

"A tablet computer" started out with a bad board vote and Power Hour. The first minute of this poll was extremely terrible for "A tablet computer", mostly because it's difficult to quickly navigate to the homepage when the new poll goes up, so tablet computer voters took longer than usual to put in their vote. The night vote was just as bad as the Power Hour. "A tablet computer" performed best during the early morning vote, but then it performed worst during the late morning vote. The ASV was the best overall time period for "A tablet computer", although it dropped off slightly during the SNV.

"A mobile phone" started out with a good board vote and Power Hour. "A mobile phone" had a horrible first minute for the same reason as the tablet computer voters, but it quickly recovered after that first minute to finish with a good board vote. "A mobile phone" dropped off slightly during the Power Hour, but even the Power Hour was quite good. It performed very well during the Power Hour, though it was slightly worse than Power Hour. The early morning vote was the best time period for "A mobile phone", followed an average late morning vote. The ASV and SNV were the absolute worst time periods for "A mobile phone".

"A game system" had the most consistent trends overall, although it performed best during the night vote and had a horrible board vote.

"Another device" had a very good board vote, but dropped off very sharply after the freeze. The night vote, late morning vote, and SNV were the worst time periods for "Another device".
