Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 1187

#201 | -LusterSoldier- | Posted 8/3/2014 9:08:23 PM | message detail
Today's poll will help to reinforce the idea that 2 consecutive polls with an identical set of options will result in the second poll getting much lower vote totals than you would normally expect. Today's poll has 294 votes at the freeze, which is lower than the 301 votes for the EA Access poll at the freeze. And the EA Access poll got under 20000 votes. I still think it's unlikely today's poll will get under 20000 votes.

Over the past 4 days (including today's poll), we have had 2 sets of polls with an identical set of options:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/5588
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/5589

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/5590
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/5591

The second poll in each set got much lower vote totals than usual, because people who voted in the first poll of each set (Poll 5588 and 5590) are less likely to notice Poll 5589 and 5591.

While I agree that Poll 5589 and 5591 suck, Poll 5588 is historically known for having a history of pulling in vote totals well above the average. Even Poll 5590 had above average vote totals.

1900 votes at the end of the first hour for today's poll. For reference, the EA Access poll from 4 days ago had 2044 votes at the end of the first hour and finished with 19193 votes. Today's poll is most likely finishing under 20000 votes and this is a poll that anyone could have answered. Yesterday's poll is clearly having an effect on vote totals in today's poll, as people voting in yesterday's poll have no idea a new poll just went up today, thanks to the identical set of poll options in both polls.

Today's poll should finish between 18000 and 21000 votes. I'm not completely ruling out the possibility that this poll will reach 20000 votes, but it's definitely bad news when this poll is already behind the awful EA Access poll in vote totals at this point in time.

Today's poll has managed to beat my prediction of 18000 to 21000 votes, so it seems like today's poll also got off to a slow start in vote totals. If it wasn't for yesterday's poll, I think today's poll could have gotten between 24000 and 27000 votes.

These new poll URLs suck. After Bacon made the poll URLs shorter last year before the start of the Character Battle, he now goes and makes them even longer.

If you want to see what the new poll URLs look like, check out this poll:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/5593

It will redirect you to the new poll URL.

Considering you can put whatever and it still works, I'm fine with it. See: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/5593-i-do-not-have-anything-witty-to-put-here-because-i-am-not-clever

So you can still use the old URLs fine, and the new ones will actually be more descriptive.

Of course, the "5593" may be replaced with a different Poll ID depending on what poll I decide to link to.

It appears that the new poll URLs have introduced a different way of being able to figure out what tomorrow's poll will be, even if the poll is a completely original poll idea.

Previously, I could only figure out the poll question for future polls only if they had the same poll question as a poll that happened in the past.

Poll updates and trend charts for yesterday's poll:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdGlvVk04ekY0QlNDaHliMmNnbmVlNkE&gid=1

"Blizzards" and "Hurricanes" had the most balanced trends over the course of the entire poll.

"Earthquakes" had an average board vote, but ended up having a below average Power Hour. "Earthquakes" performed best during the night vote, because of Asia. To a smaller extent, the western US could have also contributed to the good night vote for "Earthquakes" since they are 3 hours behind the eastern US (where voting would drop to an all-time low during the deep night vote). "Earthquakes" even managed to win an entire hour over "Tornadoes". "Earthquakes" reached a maximum percentage of 22.28% at 7:00 AM before losing 1.62% over the remainder of the poll. The morning vote was below average, but after the first 4 hours of the morning vote, "Earthquakes" remained fairly consistent until around 7:00 PM when it started performing better over the last 5 hours of the poll.

"Floods / Tsunamis" had a below average board vote and a bad Power Hour. It started doing better when the night vote started and slowly gained strength as we headed deeper into the night vote. It performed best from 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM. "Floods / Tsunamis" also managed to win 2 whole hours against "Tornadoes". "Floods / Tsunamis" dropped off when the morning vote started and remained fairly consistent from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Due to Europe still having a strong presence in the poll during the day vote, "Floods / Tsunamis" continued to gain percentage until 1:30 PM, where it had its maximum percentage of 24.81%. Although it was mostly struggling to gain percentage after 10:00 AM. After 6:00 PM, "Floods / Tsunamis" started dropping off even more as a result of Europe going to sleep. In addition to the first hour of the poll, "Floods / Tsunamis" also performed terribly during the last 6 hours.

"Tornadoes" had an above average board vote, but finished the Power Hour looking much better than its board vote percentage. Then the night vote kicks in and "Tornadoes" starts dropping off harshly. It performed worst from 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM. "Tornadoes" lost its first update to "Floods / Tsunamis" at 1:55 AM and reached its maximum lead of 673 at 3:20 AM. "Floods / Tsunamis" managed to cut off a total of 98 votes to bring the lead down to 575 (at 6:10 AM). The largest cut was only 17 votes. But after 6:10 AM, "Tornadoes" starts increasing its lead again. "Tornadoes" reached its lowest percentage of 31.39% at 7:00 AM. After that point in time, it gained a total of 2.37% over the remainder of the poll.

"Wildfires" performed worst during the board vote and Power Hour. It performed best during the night vote and early morning vote because of Australia. After the early morning vote, it dropped off slightly and remained consistent for the rest of the poll.

Polls for the next 3 days:

8/9/2014 - Do you download all of the free games offered each month with Xbox Live or PlayStation Plus?
8/10/2014 - Who do you live with?
8/11/2014 - Have you ever created a level or stage for a video game?

The current trick that allows me to see the poll question for future polls did not reveal the entire question for tomorrow's poll, so I assumed the full question also includes "PlayStation Plus" (I saw most of the question up to the "or" part.

The only poll worth tracking poll updates for is the 8/10/2014 poll.

Poll updates and trend charts for yesterday's poll:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AgBWiYjlMLwYdE9BTnYtVEdvR19TemJBS0tacURUaGc&gid=3

With this poll happening on a weekend (and during the summer), the trends were slightly different compared to the previous 2 times we had this poll. The polls from 10/12/2012 and 2/10/2011 were both on a weekday during the school year.

"My parents" performed best during the board vote and Power Hour. In fact, "My parents" actually had a much better board vote and Power Hour in this poll compared to the 10/12/2012 poll. This could easily be explained by the fact this poll happened on a weekend, so the kiddies and college students were more likely to be online when this poll went up, not having to worry about going to school/college on this day. "My parents" continued to remain strong during the night vote, getting over 51% in every hour of the night vote. Despite performing very well during the night vote, "My parents" still lost slightly over 3% during the night vote.

"My parents" began to drop off after one hour into the morning vote. The morning vote on the weekend typically starts after 7:00 AM instead of 6:00 AM for weekday polls. At 7:00 AM, "My parents" had 53.64% and lost a total of 4.57% over the rest of the poll. This is a far more severe drop compared to the same time period in the 10/12/2012 poll. This type of severe drop was attributed to the stronger board vote and Power Hour for "My parents" as a result of the weekend poll, allowing "My parents" to have a higher percentage at 7:00 AM in this poll compared to 7:00 AM in the 10/12/2012 poll. Also, "My parents" did not lose a single update to "My significant other" during this poll, although it came within 2 votes of a tied update (at 7:10 AM).

Because this poll was on a weekend, there wasn't any real ASV in this poll. At least in the 10/12/2012 poll and 2/10/2011 poll, "My parents" could take advantage of the ASV to reclaim of the percentage it lost during the morning vote. However, this poll did not have an ASV. So once "My parents" dropped off severely during the morning vote, it pretty much flatlined for the rest of the poll and made no attempt to show off any trends resembling an ASV. This was somewhat surprising because in the age polls that have happened on a weekend, "9-12" and "13-16" actually had ASV trends during the morning vote and day vote (the hours from roughly 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM).

"Other family members" had a slightly above average board vote, but a good Power Hour overall. It remained strong during the night vote. Just like "My parents", it began dropping off after 7:00 AM (one hour into the morning vote). After 7:00 AM, "Other family members" was performing slightly below average for the rest of the poll. The trends were fairly similar to "My parents", but they were less extreme.

"My significant other" had a very awful board vote and Power Hour. Even during the night vote, it was still performing pretty badly. "My significant other" never had any hour over 17% during the first 7 hours of this poll. After 7:00 AM, it did not have a single hour below 18% for the rest of the poll. "My significant other" started performing much better at the same time that "My parents" dropped off during the morning vote. "My significant other" had 14.72% at 7:00 AM and gained 4.15% over the rest of the poll. Once it began performing much better during the morning vote, "My significant other" remained pretty consistent for the rest of the poll. It performed best during the SNV.

"One roommate" had an bad board vote and Power Hour. It performed slightly better during the night vote, but even that was below average. It also performed badly during the early morning vote. It performed best during the late morning vote, day vote, aned SNV.

"Multiple roommates" had an average board vote and slightly below average Power Hour. The night vote was slightly above average. It performed worst during the early morning vote. It was slightly below average in the late morning vote. The day vote was fairly average, but it performed best during the SNV.

"Just my pet(s)" had the most consistent trends overall.

"Nobody at all" had an awful board vote and Power Hour. It performed better during the night vote. But it was the early morning vote where it performed best. It dropped off slightly during the late morning vote and day vote. Near the end of the poll, it went back to performing badly during the SNV.

In the above poll, 46.27% never owned a Genesis. As of 12:30 AM in today's poll, 49.02% have never owned a Genesis (combined percentage for the last 2 options). I expect that overall percentage to drop overnight because of Europe.

It appears that the new poll URLs have introduced a different way of being able to figure out what tomorrow's poll will be, even if the poll is a completely original poll idea.

Previously, I could only figure out the poll question for future polls only if they had the same poll question as a poll that happened in the past.

And that trick has been fixed already, so I can no longer use it anymore. I did figure out tomorrow's poll before it got fixed. Several minutes after tomorrow's poll was inputted into the database, the trick I used to figure out tomorrow's poll got fixed. I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow's poll was replaced by something else instead.

Tomorrow's poll - How many of the eight home releases of the Mario Kart series have you owned?

There's still an alternative way of figuring the poll question of a future poll, but it only works on polls that have the same exact question as a poll that happened in the past.
