I get the feeling that Jill may have boosted between contests. Only reasons I can think of are Resident Evil: Revelations and the possibility that she gets some sort of nostalgia boost (similar to Crash and Spyro?).

Of course, new games generally seemed to do jack squat for boosting their characters' popularity and Jill did worse against Mega Man than she did against Samus in '10, which looks especially damning considering who Mega Man lost to later on. So who knows?

We've seen Vincent drop awhile and just refused to believe it. Today aside, he did lose to Phoenix Wright and not impress against KOS-MOS in the last contest (with a good pic). Tifa also did significantly better against Sephiroth than Vincent too. Since he has FF7 in his option here, there's no confusion.

Vincent VS Phoenix, one-on-one, normal pics and post-Dual Destinies...I'll take Phoenix. Vincent has changed and it's not like the rest of FF7's crew is looking impressive lately.

This is a good point, it probably plays a role. Yes, Vincent is a lot weaker, but this affects a lot.

Well...I've never interpreted "valentine" to mean that, plus the poll answers clearly indicate the question.

Still, Vincent is getting destroyed. It can probably account for Jill's overperformance, especially seeing how Jill herself wasn't all that impressive last contest (well, she was in her individual matches, but doing worse against Mega Man than against Samus in '10, when Mega Man lost to Samus later that contest, plus the only thing Samus getting between contests being...that), but man.

I'm not saying everyone considers this, I'm just saying many could think of it this way. Casual voters, especially, may not be familiar with all these characters' full names and it could be a random poll to them.

So I think I finally figured out a way to prove that, yes, a character actually can be hurt by getting a new game. I know that the common wisdom is that no matter how much a game ends up being reviled, it still can't actively weaken a character's contest strength. I don't think this is true.

Remember how everyone was wondering how this match ended up as close at it was? And while it was surprising at the time, it became even more surprising in retrospect when Shadow " "underperformed" in numerous future matches. Since this was his first contest, people's baseline expectations of him were set based on his performance in it. Frankly, the only times since then that he's performed up to expectations were 2004, the very next contest, and 2013, by which point people's expectations of him had lowered to suit his new status. Only here's the thing: 2003 and 2004 were both when Sonic Adventure 2 was Shadow's only game. Shadow was awesome in SA2, but unfortunately, he was too awesome, so Sega decided that they had to find some way to bring him back despite him ostensibly dying at the end of that game, and it was only after they grossly mishandled this that Shadow became a hated character. Granted, as a one-game character he probably never would've gone on to great heights (although it didn't seem to hurt Crono too much at first, with the fact that said game is nearly two decades old being the biggest reason why it couldn't last), but I really think that his return from the dead actively weakened him as a character in these contests.

Just a random thought.

Shadow had to be some kind of weird Mario/Sonic series rSFF, as I doubt Shadow was ever worth 45% on Mario indirectly. His appearances becoming terrible from there probably did weaken him, but not nearly as much as simply not facing Mario weakened him.

A better example is Lightning. Before her game came out, she was worth 36% on Sonic. Then it came out, disappointment with it and the later releases lingered, and she lost to LFFed Donkey Kong three years later.

Mario might have still been getting anti-voted somewhat in 2003. It would be really helpful if we had some clue how popular Wario was at the time. If you set Wario at 22 on BL that puts Shadow at 31 which is still pretty high. That's probably Wario's floor in 2008, but that's with Brawl in his corner.

This is Yesmar. Congrats to CBIX Guru Winner *Raytan*!

After narrowly beating Shadow in 2004, Tidus got 35% on Mega Man.

Assume that stays constant for 2003 (Tidus's 2003 value being junk thanks to Magus) and you get Tidus and Shadow being worth 27% on base Link. Also puts Wario around 19%.

Then Shadow was still at least in the low 20's as of 2010. Not too bad considering that's 8 years removed from Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, which even if it had been strong at some point was not worth much by Game of the Decade later that year.

Lightning's the best example, though she didn't really have a game that gave her much strength; the only time she impressed was off of pure hype. At least you can argue Shadow got his 2003-strength from SA2:B, though I'd rather bet on Mario/Sonic-funkiness.

Increased hate for Square Enix overall may have played a part in Lightning declining in strength between years. Plus we've seen that hype generally does more for a character than an actual release.

61% of the site only owned an Xbox 360 or no Microsoft consoles at all. And then an additional percent or two likely owned only an Xbox One or only a 360 and a One.

And now today that's dropped to 57% so far.

I'm going to guess a notable amount of voters derped and answered yes to the poll because they have a 360. In their defense, today's poll doesn't specify "original Xbox" when it probably should have. Similar thing probably happened in the recent Playstation poll; it increasing back to 2005 levels of lifetime ownership after dipping significantly in 2009 sounds dumb, radically decreased votals or not.

I blame the people who are either tired of seeing a string of similar polls, or they don't realize that a new poll has been going up each day. The same thing happened when we had these polls back in 2009. The first "Do you still own" poll from 2009 had the highest vote totals, while the last 2 polls had the lowest vote totals.
